人間菩提--為苦難打造希望

There are so many disasters in the world.

We see that in Colombia, a volcano has erupted causing avalanches of mud and ash which destroyed villages and bridges.

Such a volcanic eruption and the devastation it brings is truly terrifying to witness.

We also see the landslide in Indonesia.

There had been heavy rain.

Because of poor soil conservation practices and excessive deforestation, landslides happened.

The landslides caused serious devastation.

Tzu Chi volunteers quickly went to shelters to give out aid.

This is in Indonesia.

We also see that yesterday, an earthquake struck off of Indonesia's coast.

So, every day, we can witness disasters happening all around the world.

When there are disasters Tzu Chi volunteers close by will provide aid.

No matter what country it is or what region it is when Tzu Chi volunteers arrive on the scene they are the greater support to victims.

(and they warm the victims' hearts)

I am very grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers for this.

They exercise both compassion and wisdom.

Such is Tzu Chi people's love.

Tzu Chi Indonesia started over a decade ago with a group of housewives who began charity work.

Over the years, local entrepreneurs started to support Tzu Chi making larger-scale projects possible.

Then, in 2002 serious flooding by the banks of the Angke River was the circumstance that prompted Tzu Chi to launch a large-scale disaster relief effort which mobilized many local entrepreneurs to help.

The project first involved housing and the first Great Love Estate was built with housing for over 1,000 families.

The housing complex provided for all of the residents' needs. Besides housing it included a mosque, a school, and a polyclinic.

It really changed the people's lives.

In 2004, we started constructing the second housing complex for the residents of a fishing village.

This fishing village (was rather run-down)

So, the provincial governor of Jakarta asked Tzu Chi if we could build housing for these villagers.

So, we built around 500 houses for the villagers.

These are the estates we built in Jakarta.

December 2004 was the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Asia Tsunami.

Tzu Chi volunteers devoted their efforts to help the disaster victims.

In Aceh Province, Tzu Chi built three Great Love villages as well as schools so that the children can receive an education and the family can have a well-grounded family life.

The three villages contain houses for 2,700 families.

The villages that we've built for them are very beautiful and enable them to have a well-settled life.

We didn't only give them a home to live in but also raised their quality of life and gave them a brighter future through education.

These were the things that Tzu Chi volunteer did to help improve the people's lives.

Currently, our volunteer, Mr.Kusuma and others are spearheading a project that involves collaboration with the government to help the poor starting with those who live in Jakarta.

They are giving the poor new and better homes.

So, Tzu Chi and the government are working together on this project.

The Jakarta government is responsible for setting up the public utilities which Tzu Chi is providing the resources for the construction.

After the houses are completed, the government will also help some residents to start their own business.

To date, more than 100 houses have been completed and the project is still ongoing.

It is very touching to see what they are doing.

Indeed, we helped them and enabled them to lead a stable life.

After that, we began to guide them in hopes that they too can have love for others.

So, residents of the first and second estates started serving as volunteers.

When Tzu Chi members went to visit the poor, they brought these residents along.

Through this experience, these residents felt that they were very blessed and knew that small donations could help many people.

So, they also started inspiring others to contribute what they can.

"I am very to touched"

"because she is in her eighties already"

"but she is still very active"

"and really wants to do good"

"To have money to donate and help others."

"she's willing to eat less betel nuts"

"and even eat (simpler meals)"

"She says that helping others is most important"

We want them to have the chance to do good, so we encourage them that they can still make a small donation.

Even if they can only donate less than US$0.10 that is still good.

"I'm always very willing to donate to Tzu Chi."

"because I know that the money"

"will be used to help people"

(who are suffering from disasters)

(I want to donate because) this money can be used to help others.

They know that small contributions no matter how tiny.

can help others if pooled together.

They also think that the aid they received also came from small donations such as these.

(This concept of pooling together small donations) is really wonderful because then, even the poor can help others, too.

These small donations are like droplets of water that can still nourish the land and enable everything on the land to thrive and flourish.

So, we should really do this.

Just like Dharma Master Cheng Yen has said if you put 500 people together, you will have one Bodhisattva with a Thousand Eyes and Hands.

Then, there won't be anything we can't achieve.

That's right.

It all starts with one person reaching out.

Then, you will start to have thousand of hands reaching out to help others.

Then, many people can be helped.

We see that in Indonesia while helping the poor, they are also contributing to their society's peace and harmony.

So, peace and harmony in society come from people having love in their hearts and reaching out to help others.

Everyone, please do not think that your good thought is but tiny and insignificant.

If everyone has good thoughts and joins together we can then shoulder the Buddha's mission as well as uphold Tzu Chi's spirit and conduct ourselves with proper deportment.

With that, aren't we manifesting the way of Bodhisattvas in this world?

The pureland is not something out of reach.

It is right here, right now.
