人間菩提--慈悲齋戒--根本救世之源

Seeing that the wildfires in Sothern California, U.S.A. have begun to be contained.

I feel much more ate ease now.

However, I would still like to remind Tzu Chi volunteers in Southern California to stay vigilant and be on the alert, because the wildfires haven't been fully put out yet.

Even a tiny spark can set the prairie ablaze.

So, they must not let down their guard.

However, I am also very moved to see that over the past five or six days.

Tzu Chi volunteers have been taking turns to monitor the fire situation around the clock.at our headquarters in Los Angeles.

Some have also gone out to survey the disaster situation and provide comfort to the people affected by the fire.

They have truly worked very hard.

At present, they are busy preparing for the aid distribution to be held later today while also working tirelessly to remind people to heighten their vigilance.

For that, I am very grateful to them.

But why is it that living on this Earth we're continuously being affected by disasters arising from the imbalance of the Four Elements?

The root cause is the human mind.

When our mind is taken over by greed, hatred, and ignorance the water of Dharma that nourishes our mind gradually dries up.

So, when we give rise to hatred and anger, the fire of ignorance ignites within and begins burning in the field of our mind.

Such is the fire of ignorance. When the fire of ignorance ignites and burns in the field of our mind it will destroy the Dharma we have within as well as our sense of morals and ethics.

When our sense of morals and ethics is destroyed, manmade and natural disasters will occur frequently because everything originates from human mind.

What happens worldwide is indeed a result of the collective karma created by all.

That's why every one of us should work to look after our mind.

How can we do that?

By spreading the Dharma widely.

Be it Catholicism or Christianity don't they share the same goal of guiding people in the right direction?

All upright faiths encourage people to show love and compassion to all.

Don't our Tzu Chi volunteers also work to spread the ideal of selfless Great Love by encouraging people to have heart so vast that it encompasses the universe?

This is saying that we should give of our love to people in every corner of the world.

And without distinguishing between religion nor ethnicity, we should strive to pass on the spirit of Great Love to all

Only when we look after our mind (and give rise to loving-kindness)

Take Malaysia for example.

The majority of the population are Muslims.

Muslims don't generally eat vegetarian.

But our Tzu Chi volunteers work to promote vegetarianism there and are very mindful in their efforts.

The vegetarian food they provide is very tasty.

(Those who eat it find it very delicious,)

And it's also very healthy.

While providing vegetarian food our volunteers also take the opportunity to guide them to love not only their fellow man but also to love and protect animals.

They not only promote this in society at large but are also sharing this concept at Tzu Chi's free dialysis centers.

There, they provide free kidney dialysis but also try to purify the people's hearts.

(by inspiring them to give)

So, for many years now many of our dialysis patients have become our donating members.

Each time we hold an activity they'd contribute their efforts.

I receive free kidney dialysis from Tzu Chi.

So, I'm pretty healthy in all.

Now that Tzu Chi is holding a bazaar as I have he means.

I'll contribute what I can.

What is even more admirable about them is that our volunteers also visit the homes of patients with terminal cancer.

They visit tem at home to bring love and comfort to them.

At the same time, they guide both patients.

My son and I have come to help today.

I'm very excited and happy about it.

Seeing so many people contribute their efforts.

I'm very moved.

They are a big help to the charity bazaars we hold.

Our volunteers also spread the word far and wide so that many people came to attend.

Last year, over 50,000 people came.

This year, over 50,000 people also attended the vegetarian food bazaar.

For this year's bazaar they posted up many signs promoting

(the campaign to have everyone do a good deed.)

(by donating 1 or 10 ringgits each month)

So, over 50,000 people came to attend the charity bazaar and over 1,000 people signed up to be donating members.

That is how our volunteers in Malaysia spread the Dharma.

(Giving is)

(one of the true values of life). By sharing this at the event over 50,000 people thus learned this value.

This is a correct belief.

Whether one is Christian. Roman Catholic or Muslim all share the same conviction of

selfless Great Love.

We shared with people that small contributions when pooled together, can do a lot, and encouraged all to be frugal and self-disciplined.

But now, in Taiwan, people are actually being encouraged to spend money as a way to promote economic growth.

That truly worries me.

It's said that small wealth comes from frugalness.

At a time like this, we should teach people not to be indulgent and spend extravagantly.

Instead, we should take this opportunity to educate people on the need to be frugal.

We mustn't forget that only a while ago, we often heard news of people committing suicide because they were not able to pay their credit card bills.

So, will every family be filled with joy and harmony society be peaceful, and the world be free of disaster.

It all has to start from purifying people's mind.

(To nurture a kind and compassionate heart,)disciplining oneself and being diligent and frugal is very important.
