人間菩提--息息相關的疼惜

As we just saw from the footage, yesterday around 4 p.m. in the afternoon,

a temblor of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Panzhihua City (in southwest Sichuan) close to the border of Yunnan Province.

The information we know as of now is that around 20 people have been killed,

over 100 people were injured, and over a thousand houses were destroyed.

Actually, these numbers are rough figures. Because it is raining in that area,

(the exact situation is not clear)

Our hearts go out to the quake victims.

Over a hundred days have passed since the big Sichuan Earthquake in May.

On Da Ai News this morning, I saw a very joyful scene in Sichuan.

We've completed building temporary schools, so the students can return to school on September 1, when school officially starts.

These past few days, the students were very happy to see their new school and bright classrooms. They helped carry new desks and chairs into the classroom. We also helped some schools build a dormitory. In other schools whose dormitories had been built, they did not have enough beds for the dorms. So they asked a school bilt by Tzu Chi if there were extra beds or unwanted or used beds that can be given to them.

The schools helped each other. Indeed, seeing how Tzu chi volunteers and come from faraway to help them, they felt they ought to help others around them.

They felt they ought to help others around them. So, they gave their extra beds to the other school. They helped one another with love. See how harmonious, bright and full of hope this area is. It is truly touching. This was in Sichuan. Also, yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the Great Love Estate in Jakarta, Indonesia,(Residents of the Great Love Estate)

(used to live in shacks along the Angke River)

Tzu Chi built a housing complex for them and the people now live in prosperity.

It's been five years now. The children are now attending school and are progressing in their studies. Seeing them brings us much happiness.

For those of working age, we also have a job training center to help them.

We see that the people there have gotten out of poverty. They are heading towards prosperity as they are working and the children are receiving their education.

Seeing them thriving makes us very happy. However on Da Ai News, we also saw that a few days ago, a tropical storm named Gustav formed over the Atlantic Ocean.

It gained strength and gradually grew into a hurricane. It swept through the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other countries and is now heading towards Louisiana State in the United States.

Seeing this hurricane continually gaining strength, makes me very worried.

This hurricane's projected path looks very similar to that of Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans three years ago.

Gustav is gaining in strength and wind speed.

So, the mayor of New Orleans is on high alert and is busy making preparations for the coming of this hurricane.

Just a few days ago, August 29, was the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Now another hurricane is coming toward them again.

No wonder the mayor of New Orleans is vigilantly preparing for this.

The state of Texas is also preparing for the hurricane as well.

Of course, we also have Tzu Chi volunteers in Texas. I hope that our Tzu Chi volunteers will all take proper precautions for the hurricane.

Should there be a disaster situation, Tzu Chi volunteers should work together in unity, harmony, and mutual love to give help should there be a disaster situation.

However, we need to remember that at this time, we must look after our safety and take precautions and also care for those around us. I hope that Tzu Chi volunteers can take care of each other, and be more vigilant about the area they live in. If you live in a low-lying area, you should evacuate to a place that is safer.

If we have such an awareness and vigilance, our actions are saying to the heavens:

"Please have mercy on us"

Please don't say, "I'm not scared of this"

(We should have greater respect for Nature)

(and its might)

If everyone can be piously sincere and reflect on the collective negative karma we've created.

If we can realize this, we should quickly repent and change our attitude to prudence and sincere piety.

This is the mindset that should go with preparing for the hurricane.

Besides preparing for the hurricane, we also need to be cautious and pray piously.

This is something we must do.

I also see our Tzu Chings gathered in L.A., U.S.A. for the 10th anniversary of U.S. Tzu Chings. I can see everyone's diligence and dedication. All of you are the hope of the future, the promise of humankind. I hope that all of you will build good character and be a role model for others---

I hope you can work to influence your peers. Now, while you are still a college student, you should influence your classmates. Right now, it's your classmates. In the future, it's your peers and farther in the future, it's those where you live and those in your community wherever you end up.

You must always dedicate yourself and practice the Four All-embracing Bodhisattva Virtues:

This first is) giving or charity.

(The second is) doing work that benefits others, making actions that benefit others to give of yourself.

(Third is) caring speech. Always speak in a way that can bring people peace, that gives love that expresses the spirit of Great Love. (Fourth is) what I said earlier---

To influence and inspire your classmates, peers, as well as your fellow community members. The world needs you to be a person of good character who can be a role model for young people, so that together, you can create a future that is good and bright. My hopes are on your shoulders. May these words serve as my best wishes to you U.S. Tzu Chings on your tenth anniversary.

And for all Tzu Chings who are listening now---

This message is for all of you as well.

970830人間菩提英文版Dispel Superstitions with Righteousness

Dispel Superstitions with Righteousness 每日播出內容 FLV300K WMV300K 56K

人間菩提--心淨光明邪不侵

In life, it's important that our thinking beliefs and thoughts are correct & not misguided. When it comes to our beliefs, we mustn't follow superstitious beliefs,

but must have correct faith. Faith is the mother of all virtues, I often say.

It can nurture within us all that is good. Moreover, if everyone can possess righteousness, we would have correct faith, correct thinking, speak proper words,

and have correct conduct etc.

Then we would have an aura of righteousness around us. We often hear the saying that righteousness can dispel evil. As long as we have righteousness, evil cannot get to us, just like the sun shining in the sky. (dispels the darkness)

Righteousness can dissolve our delusions. The reason people have delusions and superstitions is because of fear and doubt.

(When we have doubt about something)

(we would start to imagine all sorts of things)

(and feel fear. But this fear in fact comes from the doubt in our mind)

Why do we have doubt in our mind?

Because we have delusions.

Delusions is the darkness in our mind.

(that gives rise to doubt)

So, we need to keep our mind broad and bright.

To keep our mind broad and bright, we need to have correct faith,

correct thinking correct conduct as well as speak correctly (wholesomely)

If everyone can do everything with uprightness,

(our mind will be as bright as the vast sky)

Then we will be able to see everything in their true and correct form.

We really should have correct faith and recognize that humans: spirits and animals

Each live in their own sphere and do not encroach upon others' spheres.

We should understand this and have correct views.

Human beings are the most intelligent creatures on Earth.

Practicing vegetarianism is about disciplining ourselves not to cross our boundaries to not encroach on animals and harm them.

Furthermore, we should have gratitude all the time.

We should be grateful to our parents for raising us.

We should be grateful to our teachers for educating us.

We should be grateful to all people in society for their hard work which provide us with ample supplies.

(so that we can have everything we need)

Whether it's clothing, food, housing, or transportation, we need to be grateful for all of them.

If we are doing well, we should help those in need.

The wealthy should help the poor.

If we can do this, every day would be a good day and nothing would be "unlucky".

No matter where we are be it in the mountains or flatlands in main streets or small alleys. Every place will be auspicious.

(It is all because we have righteousness)

We see that Tzu Chi volunteers have a bright, beautiful heart,

(and have correct perspectives)

They are always searching for ways to

(get the community involved)

(in good works, such as recycling)

(and other activities)

So, they looked hard for a place to serve as a meeting place.

They finally found an abandoned house which was very rundown.

The house looked very dark and eerie, so the neighbors usually avoided walking by it.

It just so happened that Tzu Chi volunteers were looking for a place.

(They didn't think it was inauspicious)

Rather, they happily felt the house would serve their need. So, they contacted the owner and asked if the owner would let them renovate the house then lease it at a lower rent.

The owner happily agreed.

So, the house was leased to Tzu Chi. See, Tzu Chi volunteers renovated the house in the 7th lunar month.

(a taboo according to folk superstition)

See how it looks like a new house. The first floor can serve as a recycling area.

The upper floors can serve as a meeting-place.

Everyone is happy that the community has such a cultivation site.

When Tzu Chi has a meeting-place in the community, Tzu Chi volunteers can interact with the neighbors invite them to do good deeds such as recycling work etc.

(See, this shows that the taboos)

(for the 7th lunar month are not creditable)

In fact, we can do a lot of things in that month and should work hard in doing them.

For example, there was an elderly man living in the mountains.

It was very inconvenient to live there, but he was used to the life there.

So, Tzu Chi volunteers went up the mountain and repaired this elderly man's house.

They repaired the roof, so that is will not leak when it rains and can withstand strong winds.

They also cleaned up the area around the house.

See, it was in the mountains but Tzu Chi volunteers still went there to help this elderly man make repairs and tidy up in and around the house.

Indeed, I'm very grateful to our volunteers. They are cultivating both blessings and wisdom.

(They are always helping others whenever a need arises)

This is why I'm grateful to them all the time.

I'm very grateful to them.

We saw news that there's a hurricane in Central America.

It has swept through Jamaica, Haiti, and other countries causing widespread destruction in its path.

We also saw news of flooding in India and Nepal.

See how many people are still trapped by the raging floodwaters.

Seeing it, I'm truly worried for them and feel deeply for their suffering.

"I can't go on anymore"

"I want my child."

This mother was crying and telling people that her child had been washed away by the flood.

Her child is missing. This is what is happening now.

In another part of our world, right now, there is a hurricane, there is flooding.

It's truly heartrending to see their plight.

This hurricane is heading towards the U.S. now)

Everyone, when the Four Elements are imbalanced, the climate (will be abnormal)

and disasters will occur.

So, we must stay vigilant all the time.

(and think of how to prevent disaster)

We should do this by upholding a long-term vegetarian fast.

We should also be sincerely pious, respect and love Mother Nature, and do good deeds.

We should all create blessings everyday.

We shouldn't only do it during a specific month of the year.

We should have sincere piety and prudent caution always and do good all the time and love and cherish all that's in this world.

If we can love other people and love this land, only then can we help to restore the balance of the Four Elements.

Hence, we must continue to work hard at this.

970829人間菩提英文版Dharma is the medicine for the mind

Dharma is the medicine for the mind  每日播出內容 FLV300K WMV300K 56K

人間菩提--法藥醫心病

The footage we see is of Dr. Yang from Pingdong, a Chinese medicine practitioner.

He says that having a calm mind can help to regulate the circulation of bodily energy.

To help maintain such a good internal circulation, our mind needs to be at peace and harmony. Our internal circulation will be better. Taming our mind requires Dharma.

Dharma is the medicine for the mind. When our body is ill, we need to be treated with medicine and when it comes to our mind. Dharma is the medicine. Of course we need

(the Dharma that addresses our particular problem)

Only then can it effectively (help us tame our mind and rid of our affliction)

We also see our volunteer, Mr. Lin Jin-fu. As a child, he grew up in a family that was not very well-off, and so he decided to go to military school to help lesson his family's financial burdens.

From that, we know he is a considerate person)

However, after he started military school, he gradually began to lose his way.

He has done wrong before.

Once he deviated from the upright path, every step he took only led him further astray.

He even once deserted his post and was arrested and sent to military prison.

That was how he had lost his way.

(However, at the lowest point in his life,)

He came across a Jing Si Aphorism by chance which led him to change his perspective.

We often say that as long as you are willing to take in the teaching and practice it you can change your life.

He was truly determined to change.

Indeed, to be able to turn one's life around, one must have willpower and determination.

Without willpower and determination, it would truly be very difficult to change.

Indeed, to truly understand and grasp the essence of the teaching and further practice according to it is truly no easy thing. It's very admirable.

People are all different and they all have different afflictions.

That is why the Buddha has to lay out innumerable paths to guide living beings who have lost their way.

That is why the Buddha tirelessly gave teachings in different forms accordingly from profound teachings on deep principles to very simple teachings that we could apply to everyday life and realize in our daily living.

So, be the teachings deep or simple they all contain the Truth and can benefit us when we put them into use.

See how easily Mr. Lin was able to take in the teachings of a Jing Si Aphorism be saw.

"I accept things willingly.

I accept them and so I can suffer less.

If I complain, my suffering will be prolonged.

Just like that, I was able to open my heart."

With that, good fortune followed.

Through that simple phrase,

(he was able to awaken to the truths in life)

This is truly remarkable.

Moreover, he also took another reaching to heart:

"Do not take issue with every little thing in life"

That means, instead of thinking about what we don't have.

We should give more thought to how much we already have.

We should bear in mind that the less we take issue with everything the purer and broader our hearts would become.

If we get hung up about every little thing, we are actually harming our wisdom-life.

So, the less fault we find with everything,  the richer and more contented our life will be.

We see that in Wudu of Sichuan, China,

There is a lane called "The Great Love Lane" set up by the residents of that temporary housing complex.

As they want to continue Tzu Chi's Great Love by helping and providing love and support to one another like family.

By doing so, they are continuing Tzu Chi's spirit of Great Love in that lane of ten families.

We all lived through the big quake.

So, we must love and care for one another because life is precious.

See how they pass on this love unceasingly.

Though their houses are not very big, they put up a plastic canopy over the whole lane and with that it feels like they're living under the same roof and are like one big family.

The residents in this lane have established a pattern of behavior where they help and support one another. See, Tzu Chi's spirit of Great Love has taken root in the local area.

Then we see that in Myanmar seeds of love are also sprouting in people's hearts.

Now that Tzu Chi volunteers have finished giving out rice seeds & fertilizers,

we will start our mid-and long-term projects.

We are going to start work on rebuilding schools.

So, the minister of social welfare accompanied Tzu Chi volunteers to San Pya, Kungyagon.

The villagers the minister of education and two principals as well as students, who

had attired themselves for the occasion.

While our volunteers were interacting with the villagers seeing that there were so many people there.

The minister of social welfare took out a little book.

(containing information about Tzu Chi) and started talking about Tzu Chi,

doing an even better job than Tzu Chi volunteers could've done.

The teachers, principals and villagers were all enthralled listening to him.

Some people were moved to tears. When he was leaving, the minister of education asked:

"Can you give me the book you have in your hand?"

He said, "No, I can't"

"This is my valued possession"

"I can't give it to you"

But the minister of education and the teachers all wanted to know more about Tzu Chi.

Seeing how they wanted the book so much, our volunteers went back to their car to see if there was any left and they did find one.

So, they quickly took that book and gave it to the minister of education.

The teachers were very envious of him. (But that was the last one, and)

(there were no more left)

See how content and happy they were to receive the book from our volunteers.

Why did they want this book?

They want to learn from our volunteers and to spread Tzu Chi's spirit.

See how they have faith in Tzu Chi and how firm and resolved they are to make Tzu Chi's spirit widespread in Myanmar.

Seeing that, I am very grateful.

Indeed, it doesn't matter how much Dharma one receives and whether it is deep or simple.

What matters is whether we can take it to heart and put it into practice.

Seeing the people in Myanmar truly fills my heart with much joy.

Seeing the people in Sichuan, I feel very comforted, as they have followed the footsteps of our volunteers and are continuing the spirit of Great Love and helping and caring for one another creating a community of peace and harmony.

What brings such peace and harmony is everyone having selfless Great Love.

I am very grateful to those who help to spread the Dharma far and wide.

人間菩提--融會孝思家和樂

"I think to myself how it is that you can create such a happy atmosphere.

Being here I find myself laughing a lot. I'm very happy. No one knows each other".

But we are able to gather together here. I believe it's because of love."

"I'm very proud that I can serve as a volunteer because being able to help others

brings me much joy. Moreover, it's such sacred work. I'm very proud to be able to serve as a volunteer."

"I'm very proud to be able to serve as a volunteer. Very proud. In the past I didn't help people and I used to feel something was missing from life. Now that I'm helping others, I don't feel I'm lacking in anything anymore."

Here in Taiwan, the summer holidays are coming to an end soon. But in places where now is also the summer holiday like in Sichuan China, can everyone imagine what

This is summer has been like?

(Sichuan was devastated by an earthquake in May)

For the children, this summer holiday has been overshadowed with fear and fright.

Who knows how many children (are still yet to overcome such trauma)

(But for the parts of Sichuan)

(that Tzu Chi has been in---)

These past three months, we've had around 100 Tzu Chi volunteers there daily.

Our medical stations have provided over 45,000 medical consultations and over 810,000 boxed meals have been given out to the quake survivors.

This is a result of the relay of love by 17 aid teams taking turns to provide aid.

Apart from volunteers from Taiwan, there were also volunteers in China including Taiwanese businesspeople and local Chinese volunteers.

By giving with love, they have (inspired a bunch of local children)

When the children saw the temporary classrooms being built, they knew that they would be able to return to school when the new term starts. So, This set their minds at ease. Those who like to study can't wait for school to begin.

But for the less studious students, now, having gone through the earthquake,

they've come to realize they must make the most of their time (to study hard).

Moreover, having gotten involved with Tzu Chi volunteers by serving as little volunteers with Tzu Chi, they've been exposed to many good role models.

So, they've now very clear about their direction in life. So, it truly makes me feel hat

Wherever Tzu Chi volunteers have set foot on ever a place that had been hit by an earthquake where homes were destroyed, people's loved ones killed in the disaster and young students were injured or killed---

All these traumatic experiences that cast a shadow over the quake survivors had now been dispelled by Tzu Chi volunteers' love.

What made me even happier to see was when our last two aid teams were leaving,

These children even comforted our volunteers by vowing that after our volunteers left,

they would continue to carry on with the volunteer work.

Indeed, these little volunteers have continued to look after and care for the elderly.

See, these children are the hope of our future as seeds of love have already been sown in the fields of their hearts by our volunteers. And now it's the children's turn to cultivate their own inner field. So, every day, apart from studying, they also go look after these elderly people.

"Once, on the way to delivering meals,

We were chased by dogs. In trying to keep the lunch packs safe, we fell into the ditch.

It really hurt. All the time, we didn't cry out. We held it in. When the elderly received the lunch packs, they were very happy. I want to treat them the way I do my own parents and be good to them. The exemplary model that Tzu Chi volunteers have left behind will always remain with these children and the relay of love will continue on.

I'm sure that during this period when our volunteers from Taiwan are not there, our volunteer bodhisattvas in China and the Taiwanese businesspeople there will continue to care for the people in Sichuan. Right now, a group of Tzu Chings and members from our teachers association are in Xiamen, China for a cultural exchange. They're also meeting with the local Tzu Chi volunteers to share experiences and learn from one another. Through this, I'm sure the Tzu Chi path will be paved well there and the Jing Si principles will be passed on farther and wider. The heart of the Jing Si principles is diligently practicing the Way of Truth. We should all diligently and attentively strive to walk the Bodhisattva Path step by step.

Tzu Ch's dharma path is in society among the people, so everyone must not practice spiritual cultivation by isolating themselves from others. In fact, they way to realize the Dharma is to go into the community with the Buddha's heart and act based on the Dharma to deliver people from their suffering. Among the doctors who went to Sichuan this time, some were from Fuding Hospital in Fujian, China. For that, I am truly very grateful. Turning our attention to Taiwan---

(During this summer, Tzu Chi volunteers)

(have been holding camps for people)

(where they learn moral principles, so that)

they can receive better moral education)

As Taiwan is where Tzu Chi was founded, Tzu Chi volunteers throughout Taiwan have held numerous camps during the summer holidays.

Over 100 camps were held. They all teach good and positive things.

Over 10,000 people attended in total. There were also parent-child camps which are what Tzu Chi volunteers throughout Taiwan have been busy with as we hope to help parents and children form better and closer relationships.

Among those attending the camps, there was a teenage girl who used to not only use coarse language, but also get into physical fights with others.

She was once taken in by the police and her father even went to the police station to beg the police to forgive his daughter and not to put her misdeed on record.

She could not appreciate why her father did that. But after joining Tzu Chi,

She saw how our group of Tzu Chings and adult Tzu Chi volunteers carry themselves

and how they care for her. She has been influenced and has changed completely.

She even served as the camp leader this year and directed and performed in a musical drama about filial piety. I'm sure that, with a once rebellious child directing the drama about filial piety. It would be even more real and touching.

Many people cried after seeing the performance as it inspired them to repent their wrongdoings.

That's right. These are the families and kids that we care for.

See how they have become better people. It truly makes us feel very happy to see.

"They care about me a lot and it makes me feel as though I were at home.

I don't have a mother. Coming here, I receive a lot of love. It's like the love of a mother. Think about it, changing a child is as good as changing a family.

Sometimes, it is the parents who set wrong examples for their children.

So, after attending these camps, the children's positive ways would influence their parents. In this society for each additional family receiving wholesome education,

There'll be one more harmonious family in society.

This is what we should work mindfully at.

This morning, I heard the weather report on Da Ai TV that a tropical depression, Lawin has formed over the Philippine Sea.

Everyone, please be on the alert and keep a close watch.

Dear Jenny:

Again, thanks for sharing with me the English version. I did watch it last night, but totally forget the part about the TIMA's doctor in Philippines. Your e-mail remind me and the story is touched.
