Our short-term relief work in Sichuan, china has drawn to a close for the time being.

In these past three months, quake survivors have opened their hearts and minds.

(and walked out of their grief and despair)

I'm truly very grateful. During this emergency aid stage, our work tocused on supporting physical needs and comforting people.

This phase has drawn to a close and our mid and long term projects are just about to begin. At the farewell gathering, everyone was very sad to part with each other

(and yet everyone told themselves to)

Face it with smiles and a joyful heart

(as they look forward to seeing each other again)

That's right, they will definitely meet again.

Turning to the Philippines, there is a village called Dreamland in Rosario Oavite.

(Despite the name of the place)

(given the conditions people are living in)

It's hard to say when they will be able to wake up from the rightmare of

Living in such terrible living conditions.

We truly don't know when this will happen

But, as long as Tzu Chi volunteers, (have discovered their plight,)

It shouldn't be too long before they can leave this nightmare behind

When Tzu Chi volunteers first, they discovered that the people there lived in upspeakable suffering. Countless families were too poor to register their children's births and so these children lost the opportunity to go to school.

Seeing that Tzu Chi volunteers helped enroll the children on the household register

thus enabling them to go to school. Because of Tzu Chi volunteers, these children were able to turn their life around and their dreams for the future could come true.

Furthermore our volunteers also inspired love in the hearts of all the locals by

Sharing with them how Tzu Chi started and by encouraging them to save a little each day.

With many people doing that, almost every one of them is a donating member of Tzu Chi. The money from all the coin banks pooled together (truly came to a cons derable amount) I saved up coins in the PET bottle, so that I can help others.

See how the vats were filled up by coins that people worked to save up.

This is love that people have shown. Pooling together such love, a force of blessings is created. One of the residents in Dreamland is Nelson Alcana.

He is just 43. The head of a family of 6. His whole family relied on him to earn a living as a fisherman. At the beginning of the year, the toe of his right foot started to

Swell and blister. The swelling spread around the foot and became worse and worse.

His wife had accompanied him to see the doctor, but despite following the doctor's abvice. His foot continued to fester and rot when his wife Emeina was cleaning his right leg. His whole foot suddenly fell off. Emeina was in shock and their neighbors quickly sought help from the mayor's office after which he was brought to a hospital.

The doctor just instructed them to mix bleach with disinfectant and water to clean his foot with every day. But it continued to fester and rot and it gave off a foul odor.

So from that, we can see how unclean our body is.

There is nothing in this world that is more unclean and impure than our body.

That is what our body is like. The smell is truly very hard to endure.

It wasn't until we went to hold our monthly aid distribution that we learned of his case.

Our doctors quickly went to see him and opened up his bandaging.

When they unwrapped the bandaging flies flew out.

But our doctor, Dr. Suryany Wang didn't flinch at all.

See, though she's a female doctor. She remained very calm and treated the wound.

Afterwards, we helped bring Neison to the Chinese General Hospital(CGH).

We all know this hospital because in 1995.

Dr.Leh (then vice medical director there)Started to organize free clinics for Tzu Chi & provide medical services in remote areas.

He invited several doctors to take part in our free clinics and together they conducted many medical outreaches in offshore islands.

He has two sons who are also doctors.

One is an orthopedist who also works as an attending physician at CGH.

So, we brought Nelson to CGH and put him under the care of Dr. Leh's son, Dr. Patrick Leh.

On July.30, Neison's right leg was amputated. On August 4, his left leg was amputated too and on August 8 he was discharged.

When we were holding our monthly aid distribution in Dreamland on August 17,

Neison and his wife shared their experiences with everyone.

They were so grateful. Neison said that the doctor told him:

his history of smoking and drinking may have blocked the arteries in his foot.

cutting off the blook supply.

So, he said the was going to quit these habits because he owed his life to Tzu Chi.

He is going to carry on living.

So he's going to quit smoking and drinking.

His wife was also very grateful.

She was grateful to Tzu Chi for saving her husband.

So, both of them were very grateful.

Truly, despite what they went through,

Neison's life was saved.

Though he may be physically impaired, he still has his hands.

So long as he is still alive, he can still make his contribution to his family.

(The most important thing is)

His four children still have their father and the family is still intact.

We see that Dr. Leh was full of gratitude.

Though he has given so much, he still harbors a heart of gratitude.

He is an example for other doctors.

He said that he fears nothing in this world.

But, he listens to what I say.

Truly, that is what he has been like in the last ten or so years.

Although his wife is a Christian, and he is a Roman Catholic,

these two who are of different religious denominations both listen to my words very closely.

They watch Da Ai TV together every day and listen to my talks.

I'm truly very grateful.

At each free clinic event, when he calls back to tell me of how it went,

he'd kneel while talking to me.

Truly, such respect

Although he is a Roman Catholic, he truly follows my words very closely.

The respect he has for me truly shows he is a good disciple of mine.

He is also a certified volunteer.

All in all, he is full of gratitude.

As for his wish:

We've conducted 100 free clinics so far, I want to make it to 200 free clinics,

If the heavens let me live a few more years, I'll persevere to attend all 200 free clinics.

He has passed this legacy of love on and his sons have followed in his footsteps to become doctors.

He has also passed on his role as a convener for TIMA in the Philippines.

to Dr. Say this year.

While it is now Dr Say taking on his duties and

his sons are continuing his legacy in the hospital.

He continues to dedicate himself to Tzu Chi.

I'm truly very moved and very grateful.

There are truly many things to be grateful for

We truly have nothing but the utmost respect for our living bodhisattvas.

All in all, what makes this world most beautiful is love, thank you.
