人間菩提--境教身教還清淨

" I'll walk firmly and steadily or Tzu Chi's path"

When our 17th aid team to Sichuan China was about o leave Sichuan,

the local young volunteers and the quake survivors were all very sad to see them go.

Likewise, our Tzu Chi volunteers in China also have to bid farewell to our Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan. Our volunteers in China had come from different provinces to provide emergency aid to the quake survivors.

It's been three months now

has come to a close for the time being.

The devastating Sichuan Earthquake had brought together Tzu Chi volunteers from different provinces of China as well as a total of 17 aid teams from Taiwan.

(with each team staying a week)

To bring timely aid and comfort to quake survivors.

The short-term work to bring emergency aid has now come to a close.

Next, we will begin our mid-and long-term relief work there.

Three months after the quake the survivors are finally able to move out of the tent areas

and into temporary housing.

So, for the time being, they have a stable place that they can settle down into.

Our Tzu Chi volunteers helped them move into their new homes and supplied each family with ample provisions.

They went door to door to visit the locals and gave each family their well-wishes as well as a 100 RMB hong-bao(which represents blessings and good fortune)

With the sincerest of hearts, our volunteers gave them their blessings.

So, when our volunteers were leaving, the locals and the little volunteers(found it very hard to say goodbye)

As they bid our volunteers farewell, they said they'd see our volunteers again and waved goodbye with smiles on their faces.

But, despite the smiles, they had tears in their eyes.

They were very sad to see the volunteers go.

Our short-term relief work has drawn to a close and our volunteers were also very sad to leave.

But what is very moving is that our Tzu Chi volunteers in China are willing to should the responsibility (of looking after the quake survivors)

Knowing that it's farther for our volunteers in Taiwan to travel to Sichuan they said they'll go there often to see how everyone is doing and asked our volunteers from Taiwan not to worry.

It truly is very reassuring since our Tzu Chi volunteers in China are very dedicated.

They will carry on this relay of love and will often go to care for the quake survivors.

What's more, our mid-and long-term projects are starting up and we are in the process of building activity centers for the quake survivors.

Our construction volunteers have also helped build temporary housing for monastic practitioners in eight temples.

There are many monastic practitioners still living in tents right now as their temples have been destroyed

and they do not have temporary housing being built.

So, many of them have asked if Tzu Chi could help

It's very moving to see the good that Tzu Chi volunteers are doing in the local area which makes these laces become blessed places.

Earlier, I also saw Da Ai News reporting on Myanmar.

Apart frm distributing rice seeds and fertilizer to the farmers, our volunteers also interacted with the locals

Helped them open up their hearts.

(and encouraged them to give of their love)

So the community is very harmonious now.

Now, we are planning to help build schools for the children there.

As everyone may know, the learning conditions for the children there are very unideal.

Several classes are held together in the same big space.

(To separate the different classes)

(the students face different directions)

That's what their learning conditions are like

That's why we are planning to build schools for there children.

However, before the schools are built, Tzu Chi volunteers will again begin distributing

stationery to the children on September 4.

We had first helped their agriculture and now are helping their education.

These are all important for a sustainable society.

Education is what brings promise for the future.

Indeed, education is what brings hope.

So, exactly what kind of environment should we provide for young children so that

(they can grow up to become upright people?)

Adults are models for he children.

As I often share with you parents serve as a model for their children.

The way parents conduct themselves will be the way their children behave themselves.

So while the greater environment (e.g. society)has influences on children, parents' words and deeds

exert an even greater influence.

If the father smokes, it is very likely the children will follow his example and smoke as well.

On the news a few days ago, we saw a four-year-old who smokes because his father is a smoker.

Seeing his father smoking the child did the same and has now become addicted to nicotine.

How can one help this child?

While adults get addicted to nicotine, only after they've been smoking for some time.

That's not the case for children. (because the brains of children are still growing)

(and so are more vulnerable to addiction)

The younger a person is when he starts smoking the easier it is for him to become addicted and the greater the chance for him to become a heavy smoker.

That's why it is easier for children to develop addictions in general (let alone).

(nicotine which is itself addictive)

In Sichuan, there is a twelve year-old boy with an aicohol addiction (who would drink a bottle of beer every day)

From a young age he would see his father drinking, so he would drink along with him.

Having been drinking for three years, this boy already had an alcohol addiction and could not go a day without drinking and would drink a bottle of beer a day.

If he didn't drink, (he'd feel miserable)

Fortunately because of he Sichuan Earthquake, Tzu Chi volunteers went to that viliage.

Knowing that this child had an alcohol addiction (our volunteers and doctors)

(guided him patiently and mindfully)

(He served as a little volunteer)

(at our medical station and there)

(he saw a patient in his twenties)

(who suffered from cirrhosis due to drinking)

(By serving at our medical station)

(he saw many patients)

(and learned about their illnesses as)

(the doctor explained about them to the patients)

Our doctor then took the opportunity to explain to him.

(how the illness he saw was linked to drinking)

The doctor mindfully guided him, and was able to change his drinking habits.

Later, when our volunteer asked him, "Will you drink again?"

He said, "No, I won't. I'll never drink again"

When asked why he wouldn't drink again, he said it was because he saw

Many men who, after drinking would get drunk and lose their senses.

Plus, drinking had ruined their health. He saw it all (and decided to quit).

So, there is hope for this child.

He even vowed to our volunteers and promised he would quit drinking forever.

(Hopefully, with the love and guidance of our volunteers)

This child will not pick up any more unwholesome habits.

This is our greatest hope.

There are Tzu Chi volunteers all over Taiwan.

They all work in different professions.

No matter which field they work in, our volunteers try to educate people.

(with Tzu Chi's spirit of humanity)

(For example, a prosecutor in Kaohsiung)

(encourages offenders to copy Jing Si Aphorisms)

(and watch Da Ai Dramas)

Indeed it's a good thing that there is Tzu Chi in Taiwan.

May there be Tzu Chi volunteers in every corner of the world helping people change their unwholesome habits by way of our volunteers' examples.

So that everyone can return to their untainted. pure nature of goodness.

This is what we hope to achieve the most.

Best Regards, Jenny

Today's Jing Si Aphorisms:  To give with joy is to help others with a happy mood.

今日靜思語: 付出勞力又歡喜,便叫做"喜捨".
