Witnessing the Power of Compassion in the Philippines

"We are children of Dreamland Village.

Thank you, Grand-master and Tzu Chi aunties and uncles.

You've changed our lives and you love us like family.

We will work hard at our studies and be a good kid.

So, please do not worry about us, Grand-master."

Look at Tzu Chi Philippines' heartwarming 14th anniversary celebration

In 1994, Tzu Chi's liaison office in the Philippines was set up.

In February 1995, they began the project of providing medicine to

(patients who cannot afford medicine,)

Because in the public hospitals consultations are free, but patients need to pay for the medicine.

In April, they held their first free clinic event

That marked the start of their free clinic events which they've continued throughout these 14 years.

This year they held their 100th large-scale free clinic

They have truly benefited innumerable people.

In 2001, they began to concentrate efforts in Metro Manila.

(instead of going to remote off-islands)

With that, they became very busy.

They provided aid in times of disaster and there have been many.

They are many poor people in the Philippines and these poor have come to the cities in order to find work

They would set up shacks which are very crudely built.

Every time a fire accidentally broke out, the fire would spread quickly and burn down hundreds of even thousands of homes.

(Because Tzu Chi volunteers are close by,)even before the smoke has dispersed, you'll see Tzu Chi volunteers already there comforting people and surveying their needs.

That same day, they will give out supplies.

Their emergency relief efforts are very speedy.

The Philippines also experiences a lot of typhoons.

So, ever since 2001, when Tzu Chi Philippines shifted focus from remote areas to closer areas, they have truly been very busy.

They have done a lot of disaster relief work and they have increasingly improved and are matching Tzu Chi headquarters' quality of service in the quickness of their response.

They've really improved these past few years and are very active in relief work.

They have also gone to village called Dreamland.

In these past two or three years, I've been calling on everyone to return to the practice of donating a little every day and I am often praising Tzu Chi Philippines for following me so closely in this.

Moreover, they promote this very actively and do it long-term, not just one time.

When they give out aid, they also give out coin banks, and at regular intervals,

the people will bring the money they've saved.

So, we can see that in Dreamland, Tzu Chi people not only give supplies but open the hearts of the local people by inspiring them to contribute what they can.

From footage they sent back, we saw very big urns filled with coins that the people from Dreamland had saved.

The two urns were almost spilling over.

We see how small contributions can add up.

Though poor, they too can help others.

In Dreamland, there are already 300 people donating regularly.

So, they sow blessings every day.

For the 14th anniversary celebration of Tzu Chi Philippines, the aid recipients took a major part in the preparations and performances.

A group of women from Dreamland learned a Tzu Chi song in Taiwanese.

Their pronunciation was quite accurate.

This shows their mindfulness.

The dresses that they wore were made from fabric obtained.

(from Tzu Chi's recycling station)

Look at this group of women and these young children.

What a bright future they will have.

Seeing these people, I have to express deep gratitude to our Tzu Chi volunteers in the Philippines.

(for helping them and improving heir lives)

These Tzu Chi volunteers truly know my heart.

They have given love and help to those that I love and would like to help.

They've accomplished things I've yet to accomplish.

Therefore, I'm very grateful to them.

Back in August, the Tzu Chi volunteers went to Dreamland to teach the residents the song.

The celebration took place at our Jing Si Hall in the Philippines.

It only opened in March of this year.

So, the residents were able to perform on the stage at the Jing Si Hall.

One of the villagers expressed that they never would have imagined that one day, they'd perform on a stage.

Indeed, there are many things that are inconceivable.

As long as they have the karmic seed---

Perhaps in their past lives, they had formed karmic affinities with our Tzu Chi volunteers.

So, they are able to encounter Tzu Chi volunteers in this life and because of this, they can have a better future.

Look at these children praying.

They were very earnest in their prayers.

We respect these people's religious beliefs.

Some of them are Christian.

Some are Catholic.

But all of them prayed together piously.

Seeing all this, I'm very grateful.

That was the 14the anniversary celebration.

Because many people would be attending some of the aid recipients bought ingredients (to make treats)

Our staff also got coconuts from the trees and made coconut fruit salad for attendees to eat.

They also used coconut leaves to decorate a stand.

Every country has its own unique culture.

The food for the celebration was prepared by both our staff and the aid recipients.

This 14th anniversary celebration was truly special.

We wanted to do something for the 14th anniversary celebration as a way to show our gratitude.

Tzu Chi has helped many patients here.

So, we wanted to make rice cakes to contribute to the anniversary celebration.

From all this, we see the power of compassion and all these contributions testify to the compassion Tzu Chi people have shown.

When we give without asking for return can give us much surprise and joy.

Therefore, I'm very grateful to our volunteers, staff, and doctors for giving of themselves selflessly with Great Love.

They have taken the initiative to help people and relieve their suffering.

In this impure world they are like lotus flowers which (rise up out of the muck to bloom beautifully) They are truly beautiful and they create a beautiful world.

Let us turn this world into a pureland.
