人間菩提--別出心裁的醫師節

We see the medical staff at our hospital in Xindian celebrating Doctor's Day in a different way---

They went to Shuangxi Township in Taipei County to hold a free clinic and visit patients at home.

Though I'm giving up my Sunday to come here being able to contribute my efforts and be of service to the locals actually makes me very happy.

For six years now, we have conducted a free clinic in Shuangxi on the first Sunday of every month.

As Shuangxi is in a mountainous area, the residents there cannot reaily travel to the city.

So, our medical team and volunteers went there instead Supt. Chao along with the three asst. supts.

(as well as doctors, specialists, and nurses.) from different medical fields all went this time.

We see many heartwarming stories at the free clinic.

Everyone on the medical team wore smiles on their faces and spoke gently to the patients.

We see how Supt. Chao leaned so close to the patient and personally treated the patient's wound.

That was how mindful and caring he was.

He truly is a Great Healer with Great Love who serves as a pillar of strength for the poor the sick.

When we're treating patients at the hospital we don't usually

(think about the patients' living conditions)

(In fact, every patient has his own life & story)

But, we will not find out until we go to where they live.

We also see Asst. Supt. Shyu helping to bathe this grandpa with such gentleness just as if he were caring for his own father.

This grandpa and his elderly wife live up in the mountains by themselves.

Although they have children, their children all live in the city.

Once, when the grandpa was working in the fields, he fell and hurt his leg.

(Because treatment was delayed,)

He developed cellulitis

(With his leg injured,) he was unable to go to the hospital so the small wound worsened to the point where he could not walk.

Since he was not able to go to the hospital our doctors went to him instead to give him comfort and medical care and to help bathe him.

How loving and heartwarming it is.

What's even rarer to come by (was how Asst. Supt. Shyu's patients)

(were inspired by him to join the doctors)to serve as volunteers this time.

It was their first time to serve as volunteers.

They witnessed what hardship the poor and the sick are enduring as well as how loving and caring our doctors are.

Indeed, all that we do in this world every day in history in the making.

Isn't the exemplary example set by each person leaving a legacy?

As long as we work mindfully at every moment in time, all that we do will become a part of the Dharma treasury and we are writing our own history with our deeds.

Because of this, everything that is done at every moment, by everyone is very touching.

We also see very heartwarming images in Myanmar.

On November 2 and 3, the groundbreaking ceremonies for our Great Love village and school were held.

A few days before the groundbreaking ceremonies villagers in the area along with Tzu Chi volunteers from Malaysia, Vietnam. Thailand, and Taiwan gathered together with other local volunteers to prepare the construct on sites for the ceremonies.

The local villagers and volunteers had all been earnestly anticipating the groundbreaking ceremonies on November 2 and 3 so they all came and helped to set up the sites.

Everyone was so happy and excited that it seemed like an even more joyous occasion than New Year's and other festivals.

The groundbreaking ceremonies were very stately and dignified ceremonies.

Everyone expressed gratitude to Tzu Chi because in the wake of the disasters in China and Myanmar.

Tzu Chi volunteers worldwide mobilized to collect and pool together everyone's contribution to help these two countries.

All Tzu Chi volunteers took part in the effort.

(and though in different countries,)

All volunteers have the same orientation---they follow th Jing Si principles and carry out the Tzu Chi way of going to people in need to comfort them with loving care and to pave a path with love.

Now we see that a very smooth, even path has already been paved.

We are also building a school for the children.

This will be a school that provides

(eight years of education)

(from elementary school through junior high)

At present, the local children from different classes have to cramp together and share on big classroom.

Each teacher gives lessons to her own class while students in different grades listen to their own teacher.

Seeing that, my heart truly goes out to them.

But I'm also filled with admiration for the children's ability to concentrate, and the teachers' dedication under these circumstances.

So, I hope that the construction work can be completed soon so that the children can have separate classrooms in which they can concentrate on their studies and have a better learning environment.

A few days ago, I asked Mr. Want Ming-de a member of our construction committees:

"Is it still raining in Myanmar?"

He said, "The rain has stopped"

"Ever since the groundbreaking ceremony,"

"the weather has been very good"

"On our way back,"

"we saw some farmers collecting the harvest"

I then asked, "Does the rice look beautiful?"

He said, "Yes, the field"

"is filled with beautiful golden rice plants"

I was very happy to hear that.

With the rice seeds and fertilizers that Tzu Chi volunteers gave them the farmers can now collect a good harvest.

So, now they have the means to sustain themselves and will soon have permanent housing while the children will soon have a well-built school to go to.

See, this is where their hope for the future lies.

(Among all this good news,)what filled me with the greatest joy was to see the seeds of love flourishing in the local area.

Each of the local volunteers is like a seed that is now growing into a tree.

They truly grow very fast because they watch Life Wisdom every day.

That's why they can remain firm in their resolve and dedicate themselves very diligently.

Seeing that we know there's now more country with Tzu Chi volunteers locally.

Indeed, it is the existence of suffering people that brings bodhisattvas into being

(So, wherever there are people in need,)

(living bodhisattvas will be there to provide aid)

Take Shuangxi for example.

Why do our medical volunteers go there every month?

It is because there are patients there who can't move about due to their physical condition.

So, or medical volunteers go there every month to give free clinics and to go to people's homes to provide them with the much needed medical treatment.

For that, I am truly very grateful.

That's how we should bring Buddhism into the context of everyday life and "humanize" Bodhisattvas.

See how our doctors and volunteer bodhisattvas join together and go wherever help is needed.

There are too many things to be grateful for.

All in all, thank you.
