"Hello, Master"

"What is this area called?"

"This is Waixizhou of Shuishang Township"

"Waixizhou? It's so large."

Seeing the recycling station in Shuishang Township, I truly feel hope.

There is a real air of rustic simplicity here and small-town goodness which I could feel the moment I arrived.

The recycling work our volunteers do there isn't at a superficial level but very thorough

(This recycling station is shaped like a gourd)

(with a long narrow corridor)

(leading to a very wide area at the end)

(and the recycling work they do is very thorough)

The recycling station seemed to be teeming with recycling volunteers.

Walking in I saw different areas where volunteers were doing different work.

Farther I walked into the station the wider it became and the work our volunteers do also got more and more complicated.

I asked one of our volunteers:

"The price that the recyclables sell for"

"is much lower now"

"Will you still persist in doing recycling?"

He said "Of course we will"

Because it serves as a form of education"

Hearing that I felt very comforted.

Indeed, doing recycling can educate people on environmental protection."

We truly must cherish the Earth.

Only when the Earth is safe and well can mankind be safe and well.

The Earth is where man inhabits it has mountains and rivers seas and plains.

In addition to mankind there are also plants and animals.

There are abundant life forms on the Earth.

So, humans really make up just a tiny fraction of this rich planet, and yet mankind has done so much damage to the Earth.

Why have climate conditions now become so erratic?

As people in the past used to say, if we don't follow nature's laws then Nature won't take its natural course.

If the Four Elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air are imbalanced disasters, such as earthquakes, will occur.

When earthquakes are mentioned, we'd be reminded of the 921 Earthquake and images of the 921 Earthquake would surface in our mind very quickly.

Such is the way our mind works.

The mind can conjure up images very quickly.

If we bring up the subject of floods & typhoons……

What devastation did Typhoon Sinlaku bring to Lushan in Nantou County?

Severe flooding, right?

The typhoon had brought heavy rainfall.

But why did we humans have to destroy Nature first only to suffer the consequences of our own actions later?

Flooding occurred because we did not do proper soil conservation, and the more areas we developed the more damage we caused to the land.

With so many tour buses driving up into the mountains, the vibrations that are created and the strain on the land from the buses' weight does a lot of harm to the land.

That's why I often remind everyone that we should walk gently so as not to hurt the land.

Every day I speak of our need to be grateful to respect (Mother Nature), and to cherish and care for our planet with love.

To promote the spirit of gratitude and respect.

I have spent much of my life traveling to different parts of Taiwan.

What do I do that for?

To lay out our Dharma path (so that our principles and way of practice) can truly take shape and form.

(You all know that all throughout my life)

(I've been working to fulfill the few words that)

(my Master said to me)

What are those few words>

"Work for Buddhism and for all living beings"

Yes, "Work for Buddhism and for all living beings"

"The essence of working for Buddhism" is encapsulated in the term"

Jing Si"

(meaning contemplation with a mind in stillness)

When our mind is unsettled and in turmoil greed will arise in our mind and then in our interactions with others, we will not be able to abide by our duties.

We cannot keep ourselves in check, nor be diligent, frugal, or hardworking and our mind is blind and full of illusions. Why?

Because we're caught up in desires, be it for material comforts, wealth, fame, or power.

Nowadays, many people are afraid of hard work.

They don't want to do anything too tiring.

That is why we need to discipline ourselves.

It's like what I asked a volunteer earlier.

The money we get from selling recyclables"

"isn't even enough to cover the cost of gas"

"Do you still want to keep doing recycling?"

He said, "Yes, we must keep doing it"

"to teach others about protecting the Earth"

I was truly very touched to hear that because such education is what we must do now.

Recycling is truly spiritual cultivation---

It trains us to not be afraid of getting dirty to not be afraid of hard work and to not gossip (as everyone is busy working)

It also lets us become physically healthier and clear out our inner garbage at the same time while sorting the recyclables we collect.

We can even sell the recyclables for money.

So, recycling is truly spiritual cultivation.

The money from selling the recyclables can even go to fund Da Ai TV to produce programs broadcast worldwide.

I often hear people say that Da Ai Tv changed their views on life and changed the way they live.

So, everyone, the direct effects of recycling is that we gain joy from doing the work and through doing the work we can moreover help to protect the Earth.

By recycling unwanted things we can make them into other useful things.

For resources in society not to run short, we must do all we can to recycle things be it copper.iron, etc….

So that people would not have to mine for more.

So, everyone I'm truly very grateful to you.

All of you believe in what I say, and are also practicing what the Buddha teaches us about giving, moral discipline, tolerance & forbearance. Diligence, Samadhi, and wisdom.

These are the Six Paramitas.

By doing recycling, every one of you is.

Practicing giving and moral discipline.

There are so many volunteers, but, working together at our recycling station.

Everyone is equal

Isn't that upholding precepts & moral discipline?

Everyone's dedication and efforts to recycling---that's giving.

(By doing your work dutifully,)that's practicing moral discipline.

As for tolerance and forbearance, doing recycling is also cultivating tolerance because what we deal with is garbage which is dirty and smelly and it's hard work too and it's hard work too.

If not for tolerance and forbearance who would be willing to do the work?

It's not something most people can do.

But you dedicate yourself to the work willingly and happily, and that's why you're able to endure everything.

Since you've already endured the filth enduring others' behavior should be a matter of course. When people seem unfriendly we should be understanding & still be grateful.

It could just be that we have different viewpoints and we interpret things differently.

That's all.

What is there that can't be forgiven & tolerated?

So, from the recycling work, (we can get a lot of spiritual training)

So, everyone, I am truly very grateful to you.

Our recycling work not only teaches people about environmental protection but can also save our planet and make people more healthy, both in body & mind.

It is also a form of spiritual cultivation the first step to start our path of cultivation.

Practice giving moral discipline, and tolerance as well as diligence as everyone works so hard without thinking of quitting.

Though the money from recyclables is now very low, you still do the work diligently.

That is Samadhi.

When we have a firm resolve in doing what we do we develop wisdom.

So, in doing recycling we can practice all of the Six Paramitas.
