人間菩提--景氣寒冬中的暖陽

Early this morning I received a piece of comforting news from the US.---

The wildfires in Southern California are starting to be contained.

(One major fire is 95 percent contained)

(while the other two are new 40 percent contained)

However, we are still worried about

(the remaining areas where fires are still raging)

We hope that the Santa Ana winds will stop blowing so that the fire can be put out.

Only then can everyone truly be safe and sound.

In recent years, the U.S. has continuously been affected by disasters.

Because their root cause lies in human actions and human minds, it is important that peoples minds can be moistened by the water of Dharma so that the fire of ignorance won't ignite easily.

If this fire of ignorance ignites within each person's mind then the collective impact of this---the collective negative karma created---will manifest in the physical form disasters ravaging our land.

So, we must purify people's heart and mind.

Even if there is only a tiny amount of Dharma in each person's heart it is like a drop of water.

When pooled together, these drops can form a stream of purity.

(to moisten the land)

Don't I often say:

"Grains of rice can fill a basket"

"and drops of water can form a river"

So, we mustn't underestimate every tiny act of loving-kindness.

What we see in the footage now is also in the U.S.

This is in Northern California.

Many people think of the U.S. as heaven on Earth but there are still people there living in poverty.

So, it is not easy for some children to receive a god education.

Even if they can go to school, (the quality of education cannot compare)

(to schools with more resources)

Not wanting these children to feel disadvantaged.

Tzu Chi volunteers began a book giving program in 2004 to provide books to children in over 260 schools in California.

Every year, Tzu Chi gives books to these children so that they also have the chance to read books outside the school curriculum.

It has already been four years since this book giving program began in 2004 and it is carried out every year.

This is how Tzu Chi volunteers treat all children in the world as though they were their own as we cannot bear to see impoverished children trail behind others.

That is why our Tzu Chi volunteers often go to interact with these children and bring them joy so that they can have a happy childhood just like other kids.

With the current global financial crisis, the economy is doing very poorly, and

(many people have become unemployed)

So, our volunteers know that the financial burden on these families must also be very heavy as many laborers are now being laid off.

Our Tzu Chi volunteers in San Francisco have been working with food banks for some time now.

Recently, even the food banks are being affected.

This place used to be filled with cereal.

But, toward the end of last year there wasn't much cereal left.

And now, there is nothing.

These used to be full of bread.

But now, there's none.

There used to be a lot of vegetables and fruits.

But now, it's empty.

(What can our Tzu Chi volunteers do,)

(as they still need to provide food assistance)

So, they have to go to more than one food bank to buy supplies.

There was an elderly bodhisattva, Mrs. Ouyang, who, despite being in her seventies,

(still worked tirelessly)

She traveled a long way to purchase relief goods.

Seeing her travel back and forth from the food banks another group of volunteers were inspired and accompanied her to go buy the relief goods as she traveled all over the local area to buy relief goods.

Realizing what hard work it was, everyone said:

"Now we know how hard Mrs. Quyang has worked"

Indeed, it's truly very hard work.

So, with everyone joining their efforts and going to different food banks.

We can still secure a steady supply of relief goods for those from low-income families so that they can meet their nutritional needs

Furthermore, our volunteers also shared with the students the story of how Tzu Chi began with people saving a coin every day.

(inspiring their love)by letting them know that by donating a coin, they can help others.

As long as they can think of helping others by donating a coin every day.

They'll be giving rise to a kind thought every day.

With that, their wisdom-life will grow every day.

Our volunteers also told them that it's okay if they can't donate money.

They can help collect recyclables such as PET bottles.

(as an effort to cherish resources)

Our volunteers showed them the blanket that we made from the PET bottles.

(to educate them on environmental protection)

Aside from encouraging them to donate their spare change every day our volunteers also encourage them to recycle to teach them the concept of cherishing resources.

Aren't our volunteers carrying out our missions of charity and education at the same time?

I am truly very grateful to them

Tzu Chi volunteers persevere in their efforts to benefit others without rest.

They not only provide material aid to the poor.

(to help relieve their financial burden)

And make sure their nutritional needs are met they also take care to nurture their wisdom-life.

Look at the Tzu Chi volunteers in the U.S.

Though they are so far away from me, they take the Dharma to heart and put into practice in their daily life.

Seeing how their wisdom-life is growing continuously.

I am truly very grateful.
