人間菩提--體現劬勞銘感恩

Great Love knows no boundaries.

Indeed, everything is a result of the coming together of causes and conditions.

Back in 1998, because of the severe devastation caused by Hurricane Georges and Hurricane Mitch in many countries in Central America and the Caribbean.

Great Love brought Tzu Chi volunteers there.

The country closest to Central America is the U.S.

So, Tzu Chi volunteers from Taiwan and the U.S. joined together to survey the disaster situation in countries affected by the hurricanes.

We then called upon Tzu Chi volunteers around the world to mobilize and collect donations of money and supplies for the aid effort.

In Jan. 1999, sixty containers of clothes were shipped to Central America.

Thinking back to that time, my heart is still filled with gratitude for the show of Great  Love where everyone joined together to help.

And because of this, the people who received our aid were very grateful and such gratitude is even being passed on.

In fact, because of that aid project,

(seeds of love were sown and started to grow)

Take the Dominican Republic for example.

Through the events our U.S. volunteers held there many Taiwanese businesspeople were inspired to become Tzu Chi volunteers and carry out Tzu Chi's missions locally.

So, in 2000, La Romana Elementary School which Tzu Chi helped construct on what was once a garbage mountain, was inaugurated.

The place had been transformed into a school and a residential area.

These children used to live by the garbage mountain dressed in tattered and dirty clothes scavenging through the garbage for anything edible.

In the blink of an eye, these children are now going to school.

What adorable children and see how neatly dressed they are.

So, I often say that as long as we have the will there is nothing we cannot achieve.

So, Tzu Chi volunteers often take on seemingly impossible challenges to make things possible.

Of course, I am also very grateful for our U.S. volunteers who traveled a long way to the Dominican Republic.

There is quite some distance between the Dominican Republic and the U.S.

Moreover, at the time, the stories we heard about airplanes to the Dominican Republic often brought up frightening images.

So, every time our volunteers went there.

I was always on tenterhooks.

One time, when the airplane was about to take off, the door of the airplane fell off.

That's how old and dilapidated the planes were.

But in order to carry on with the mission, our volunteers kept flying back and forth.

However, now we can see that each and every seed has sprouted and grown into a small tree has sprouted and grown into a small tree.

On October 23, when Tzu Chi volunteers went to distribute stationery and unforms again they saw how

(the older students were looking after)

(those younger than them like brothers & sisters)

The school is like one big family where students treat one another like brothers and sisters.

Before Tzu Chi volunteers arrived,

(the older students taught the younger ones)

How to line up in an orderly fashion, how to position their hands while standing, and

even taught them how to button up their uniforms.

This is a very good school tradition and education.

Of course, to achiever this, Tzu Chi volunteers had to overcome all sorts of difficulties first.

Be it taking long journeys back and forth by air, traveling over mountains and valleys or wading through the water our U.S. volunteers have endured much hardship for there to be the fruits there are today.

In the footage, we see how the teachers of our kindergarten in Malaysia use very ingenious ways to educate the kids.

The teachers take advantage of many occasions to educate the children about life's values.

I often say that we should harbor a heart of gratitude at all times.

Our teachers in Malaysia took in what I said and they taught these young kids to know to be grateful to their parents, their teachers all living beings as well as to their country.

To help them better understand the "four debts of gratitude", the teachers guide the students using ways that are easy for them to understand.

So, we saw that when their National Day was approaching the teacher told the kids:

"It is the country's birthday"

"So, we must show our gratitude"

"to people from all professions in society"

So, they provided the kids with opportunities to gain an insight into the hard work of people of various professions.

For example, they took the children to visit a hospital where doctors explained to them.

What time they had to arrive in the morning,

What they had to prepare.

How they usually interacted with patients.

What suffering patients endure.

And how doctors should care for patients with love so they'd know what a doctor's day is like and what hard work it is.

Moreover, they also went to visit the army.

They saw the soldiers doing their daily drill and learned that it was the soldiers' duty to protect the country.

They were also taken to the police station and learned that the police have to ensure public safety.

(An officer also shared the work he usually does)

They were also taken to the fire bureau were they gained an understanding of

The arduous work of firefighters.

Look at these kids.

Upon learning what hard work firefighters have to do they gave them a massage.

See how endearing these kids are.

There visits were to let them understand others' hard work.

They also learned about the arduous work of sewer cleaners.

Learning that they had to clean up the dirty drainage under the scorching sun,

They knew to be grateful.

So, wherever they visited, they presented a card to express their gratitude.

Also, as the sewer cleaners hands were dirty.

They fed them the pastry that they'd made themselves.

They did all this to thank all those working hard to contribute to society every day.

This is humanistic education.

So, to nurture good moral character in children, we should guide and educate them from a young age.

We should let them know that the reason they can lead such a blessed and comfortable life is because of he hard work of people from all trades and professions.

(See, how ingenious our teachers are)

Indeed, this is where our hope lies.

The children are growing and with the education we provide as they grow.

Their wisdom is also growing---

Wisdom characterized by goodness & purity of heart.

Seeing them, we truly see infinite hope.

Not only are their parents very happy.

We are also very happy and comforted because in them, we see hope of society.

So, I'm very grateful.

But, seeing so many natural and manmade disasters happening around the world.

I'm very worried and feel a great sense of urgency.

(To eliminate disasters) we need to work hard to sow and nurture seeds of love around the world and purify hearts everywhere.

Everything originates in the human heart and must start from purifying the human heart.

So, we must carefully look after this field of the heart so that good seeds can flourish in it and multiply.

Seeing the fruits that have already been reaped we can be even more sure about the relationship of causes and conditions bringing about consequences.

The "causes" are the seeds and the "conditions" are created by everyone joining together efforts to spread love.

This will definitely bring good consequences and create a bright future.

In fact, we can already see the fruits now.

So, everyone, we must work hard, mindfully.
