人間菩提--掌舵生命航向

Look at Sichuan.

Though it's been a few months since the quake hit, the relay of love still continues.

The woman we saw in the footage.

(suffers from breast cancer)

When her daughter referred her to our volunteers, she was already at the terminal stage of breast cancer.

Despite that, our volunteers still encouraged her to receive treatment, so that she has the confidence, courage, and willpower to undergo chemotherapy.

Even though the doctor told her that it was too late for treatment.

Our volunteers encouraged her not to give up any hope.

Hearing that, she mustered her courage and went to the hospital that our volunteers had arranged for her.

She took in the Dharma that our volunteers shared with her so she's able to let go of her fear of death.

Indeed, through meeting Tzu Chi volunteers, she was able to open up her heart and mind and a seed of love has been sown in her heart.

So, in practicing the Six Paramitas of giving, upholding precepts, etc. (and guiding people)

(onto the right path)

We must also sow the seeds of love in them not only for this life but also for future lives to come.

Isn't this what our volunteers and the local volunteers in China are doing?

Despite being far away from Taiwan we are still able to continue our care for her,

Providing her with spiritual support, and guiding her onto the right path in life.

Seeing that, I'm truly very touched.

Tzu Chi volunteers, I truly love you and respect you for your spirit of selfless Great Love.

Be it here in Taiwan or overseas, in carrying out Tzu Chi's missions, you all work together in unity and harmony.

Although carrying out our Four Missions is truly very hard work, so much grace and kindness is involved as every task is achieved with everyone's love.

How endearing you all are in cultivating such a field of blessings.

Every time I speak of Tzu Chi volunteers, it truly dispels many worries and anxieties.

You truly make me very happy.

The lady we see in the footage is Li-hua.

At the age of 13, she left her hometown and took up an apprenticeship as a hairdressing assistant.

When she was eighteen, she worked in a barber shop at the U.S. army air base in Tainan.

A friend of hers introduced her to an American officer.

After that, they began seeing each other.

But she got pregnant out of wedlock.

Though her family objected to this marriage with her being pregnant they had no choice but to consent to the marriage.

After some time, carrying her son, she left for San Diego, California with her husband.

From the first day she set foot in the U.S., her husband lost his temper with her saying.

"Why did you come?"

"You don't understand anything"

"You don't even know how to take care of a kid"

From that time onwards, he'd often say to her:

"Leave the kids behind. You go back"

From that, we can tell what kind of life she must have led in the U.S.

Her husband drank, and when he drank, he'd hit her.

He'd often tell her to go back to Taiwan.

But she had made up her mind and she wouldn't abandon this family because she had three children.

So, she persisted in staying there.

But, in order to survive in the U.S., she went into hairdressing.

She couldn't speak English very well, so she really didn't have a very easy life.

But we can see that she was very brave.

This went on until she met our Tzu Chi volunteers.

She was very happy to meet people from her homeland.

She knew about the work Tzu Chi did in Taiwan and she felt that she could also do recycling.

So, on the one hand she did recycling, and on the other, she worked as a hairdresser.

As she served as our volunteer her first wish was that she could help to inspire her husband.

Where there's a will, there is a way.

Having made this resolve, and taken up this vow, she naturally had the strength to see it through.

So, in her work as a hairdresser, she has inspired some of her clients.

She's also very dedicated to her family.

Especially after joining Tzu Chi, she also changed within herself.

She became more gentle and thought about how she could introduce her husband to Tzu Chi. So, her husband was inspired to do recycling and through the work, he changed a lot.

He has quit drinking and does recycling together with her.

That's the story about her husband.

But what troubled her even more was her three children.

All her three children were very rebellious and she was at wit's end about what to do.

But they are gradually changing.

She sent her youngest child back to Taiwan so that he could get away from his friends who use drugs.

Her eldest child has already started a family of his own and her second son is still in jail.

See, what a rocky life she's had.

From a very young age, she had set foot in a foreign land.

(with her husband who'd hit her and drink)

She also had to take care of three kids who had gone astray from the right path.

But see how she was still able to survive on that piece of land.

She'd remarkable for it.

Now, we see that her husband despite being a retired naval officer is still able to humble himself to do recycling.

That is no easy feat.

What I respect and admire most about her are her strong convictions her commitment (to seeing through her marriage)

and her carrying these through in action.

That is the so-called "faith, vow, and action"

Look at her capacity to endure all that she has upholding the vow she's made with faith.

She didn't receive much education.

But are the highly educated able to do what she has done?

She is only a very ordinary person.

Can those with social standing and high achievements

do what she has done?

Although she is only a very ordinary person

(seeing what she has done,)

We find her truly admirable.

Faith is the source of all merits and virtue.

When we have chosen the right direction to follow in life, we must abide by our faith and conviction and believe in ourselves as well as others.

We must be selfless. As long as we are selfless---

Be it in a family, society or the whole country, everyone must be selfless and have faith.

We must have faith that one day people will change and things will change for the

better because people's true natures are good.

No matter how difficult people around us are they also have the capacity to change.

Since we have faith in ourselves and choose the right direction in life.

We must make strong vows to always stay on the path of awakening life after life.

All in all, in this world it's not those who are successful in business that can do great things.

It's the heart that determines what strength we have and what we can accomplish.

Life is impermanent.

So, we must choose the right direction and do the right things.
