人間菩提--啟愛心•續賑濟

The global financial crisis has caused much anxiety and concern for people around the world.

With the high unemployment rate

(many people are facing financial difficulties)

Why has this come about? Ultimately, it's because people are opportunistic and seek a quick profit (through speculation, etc)

We should make a living based on our own hard work and abilities, by properly applying our education.

And the professional skills we have acquired to our profession and field of work.

I believe that if we rely on our own skills to make a living our financial situation will be stable.

But if we all want an easy life and don't want to have to work hard and we want many things, but aren't willing to give our labor to earn it and all we focus on is enjoying ourselves then our society will be like a bubble.

Once the bubble bursts, we ourselves will be the ones that suffer.

In the media recently, there was also

( an inspirational piece of news)

Mr. Wang Yung-Ching, (the founder of the Formosa Plastics Group) recently passed away.

Many people felt the loss deeply.

(His business conglomerate is worldwide)

(With is spirit of frugality and hard work)

He is really a model young people should learn from.

He started his business with only NT$200.

Through his frugality and hard work over the past 50 years he was able to build a business conglomerate.

He passed away at the age of 91.

(with a personal fortune of US$6.8 billion)

But even with such wealth, he still lived very frugally.

He also did a lot of philanthropy work.

(These are things we can learn from)

At the same time, young people today should also care about the wellbeing of our planet.

Look at how the climate has changed.

Disasters are occurring one after another.

In fact, there are many people suffering in this world.

Remember the Sichuan earthquake in China that happened in May which killed tens of thousands of people destroying many families.

So many people must deal with the searing pain.

(of losing a loved one)

And at the same time, they have to live in difficult circumstances.

How many people have lost everything they had worked hard to build through the past decades.

Think about it, they've been living in tents from May through the summer and have had to endure very hot temperatures and now the winter will be coming soon.

What suffering they are going through.

So, our Tzu Chi volunteers are now preparing for the winter distribution to help the needy people affected by the quake survive the winter.

So, we are also moving ahead with our reconstruction projects in Sichuan.

For this winter's aid distribution, because these are millions of people affected by the earthquake we cannot possibly provide aid to every single family.

We can only give aid to those with the greatest need and focus on people who really will have a hard time surviving the winter.

Right now, a group of our volunteers are in Sichuan.

Today they'll be divided into five teams and visit families in fifteen villages to find out what supplies.

We should give them for this winter

(Winter will be coming soon)

So they will need to work fast to get things ready.

The reason Tzu Chi volunteers dedicate themselves like this unconditionally is because they cannot bear for others to suffer.

At the same time, we should encourage those we help to help themselves also.

The winter is approaching and we see people starting to prepare for it.

(Those with males in the family)

And who still have some means to rebuild have taken out loans in order to rebuild.

They've gotten government aid but they're also working hard to try and do what they can to rebuild.

But there are some people who really have no means to help themselves.

We must really help these people to help them survive the winter.

The economy is indeed not doing well now but at the same time, disaster survivors.

To help them, you not only need manpower but also need funds.

Though the economy is not doing well now, if everyone can make just a tiny contribution just like how Tzu Chi started with donations of just NT$0.50 a day.

(Students can also do this)

For instance, when you get the urge to buy a beverage quickly stop yourself and instead take out your water bottle and fill it up with water.

You can start saving money by not buying beverages.

(and donating that money instead)

(If you can do that)

(When we give aid to tens of thousands of people)

You will know that your donation was part of what made it possible.

In Sichuan, China alone.

There are tens of thousands of people who will need aid for the winter.

So, I hope that everyone---

All teachers and students out there--- can help promote this practice.

Drinking water is better for the students' health and by donating that money out of love.

They are healthier spiritually.

So, it's good for the body, mind and spirit.

Our capacity to aid the poor all comes from the pooling together of tiny contributions.

That's how great strength is amassed.

Meanwhile, we see that the U.S. has been hit hard by the financial crisis.

However, at such a time the insurance company, MetLife, also made a donation of US$30,000 to Tzu Chi to support Tzu Chi's aid to Sichuan, China.

They said that as long as they spend a little less in their daily life.

They'll have money to help others and they can still get by just as well.

So, even though we are in an economic downturn with everyone donating a little bit together, we can help quake survivors and the poor to stand on their own feet.

After that, they can in turn help others.

That is a cycle of love.

So, I hope all of us can bring forth our love to help people in need.

Soon, we will need to give out aid for the winter in China.

Besides the Sichuan quake survivors, there is also a very poor county near Beijing that we will need to provide aid to.

In Fujian Province as well, there may be tens of thousands who need aid for the winter.

There are many elderly, women, and children who will have a hard time surviving the winter.

Though they live in a place far away from us, we all live on the same planet.

(If we can go there to help them,)

Through the interactions, naturally, their love can also be inspired.

They will in turn help others as well.

With more and more people helping others, our world will become brighter.

In a word, I hope everyone can nurture a heart of giving.

Today's Jing Si Aphorisms:   Our future accomplishments are determined entirely by how every should second in our life is put to use. The future is the cumulation of many 'nows'.

今日靜思語:  未來的成就完全是在掌握分秒中造就出來, '未來' 也是由' 現在' 累積而成.
