Isn't everyone a living buddha and bodhisattva?
The Buddha says that all living beings have the Buddha-nature and they share the same capacity for wisdom & virtue and the same pure, true nature as a Buddha.
In life some people toil away every day for the sake of making a good living whereas some dedicate their labor willingly for the good of others.
See how different these two kinds of lives are.
So, as we live in this world (as part of the human community,)
what is the value and meaning of such a life?
(knowing it, we'd find our purpose and mission)
Look at Dr. Hsu Ming-chang in the
He had endured much hardship since young when he was still in
When he was still in primary school, he did everything with his father be it selling things on the street or doing all kinds of manual work.
He did all he could to earn money so that he could help to pay for his younger brother's tuition fees.
But he did not give up his studies and still studied diligently at the same time.
After completing the military service he pursued a career in the
In 1993, Dr. Hsu received a phone call from Tzu Chi volunteer who told him that one of the doctors who was originally scheduled to take a shift at the free clinic center that was about to open in the U.S. suddenly said that he couldn't do it and they didn't know who to turn to.
Hearing that, Dr. Hsu said, "I can take the shift"
At the time, he thought that it was just a volunteering thing.
Although he had a clinic of his own he could set aside time to see patients at our free clinic center.
In serving at the free clinic center he was very moved and inspired by the experience and felt that he had found his direction in life.
He saw the way Tzu Chi cared for the suffering without asking anything in return and he knew that was what he wanted to do in his life.
So, when our volunteers couldn't find doctors to see patients at the free clinic center.
He shouldered the responsibility.
But he still had his own clinic to look after.
So, it was hard work to serve at two clinics.
Though his wife gave him her full support in providing free medical service to those in need she couldn't help but worry that he'd get too into the religion part.
(as Tzu Chi is a Buddhist organization)
Later, when Tzu Chi volunteers invited him to visit Hualien in

"without knowing all about"
"its ideals and spirit?"
"I ought to go and find out"
So, he said he would come.
Everything was then arranged including the flights.
But his wife was still very worried.
She couldn't eat or sleep for three days and three nights.
Dr. Hsu couldn't bear to see his wife so worried and distraught.
So, he told his wife:
"I'm not going back to
"But someone has asked me"
"to take something back to Hualien for them"
So, he took the things to our Tzu Chi volunteers and said:
"I'm sorry"
"I wanted to go but my wife's ill,"
"so I can't go now"
When they heard this, everyone felt it was a great pity.
As I was driving home that night……
Originally, I was taking an evening flight.
As I drove, I thought to myself:
"Maybe I don't have"
"deep karmic affinities with Tzu Chi"
"If I'm able to go, it means I have"
"a karmic affinity with Tzu Chi"
"Then I'd carry on with Tzu Chi's work"
When I reached home, I was surprised to see my wife standing at the door.
I said, "What's the matter?"
She said, "You can go to Hualien"
I was very moved when I heard that Buddhism says that the workings of karma are inconceivable.
So, if you were sincere, when you made the vows then it'd come true.
So, this makes me think of what Master says about the greater the vows you make the greater the strength you gather.
The workings of karma are truly inconceivable.
Because of his wife's change of mindset, he was able to continue Tzu Chi's work and make it his mission.
It's been 15 years since he joined Tzu Chi.
In fact, in these 15 years he's had to work very hard as a doctor, because with his children growing up and going away to college he had many expenses to pay.
Later, in order to pay for his children's college tuition fees he sold his house and rented out instead so that he could support his children's college education and living expenses.
With that, he devoted himself to Tzu Chi's work.
He'd often take part in free clinics abroad and pay out of his own pocket for any expenses incurred.
See, for the last 15 years he had been living on a tight budget.
It wasn't easy on him and his family.
Towards the beginning of this year when we held a relief mission in
(He goes to several)
(international relief missions almost every month)
He runs the free clinic very frugally too.
See, when the chairs are worn out, he sews them up himself.
He leads a very frugal lifestyle in every aspect.
See how he upholds his vows steadfastly and how strong his sense of mission is in taking up Tzu Chi's medical mission.
Though he is not good at expressing himself he dedicates himself wholeheartedly, being on call.
24 hours around the clock all year round.
He is truly committed to Tzu Chi's cause and has taken it as his life mission.
Those words describe him very well.
So, what kind of people can be called talented?
Normally, when you ask him to share his thoughts he doesn't have much to say.
For example, if you ask him:
"When you saw these people, how did you feel?"
He'd say, "Very moved"
"What else?"
"Nothing"
He wouldn't be able to fully express the love he felt inside.
But looking back on the last 15 years and how well he treated his father and his family members as a youth as well as the responsibilities he shoulders toward his family in the U.S.
Now you'd see that he's truly remarkable.
He truly abides by his ideals and makes vows to carry it out as his life's mission as well as devote himself wholeheartedly to our medical mission because seeing these suffering people he knows that this is what the wants to do in life.
This is his life's mission.
That's why he persists in his work in spite of all difficulties.
I don't know what words we can use to describe someone like him.
People with knowledge and talent do not.
(necessarily make use of it to benefit others)
(It takes wisdom for one to)
(make use of his skill to benefit others)
Only those who can abide by their ideals and make use of their talent to benefit others are people with true wisdom.
In his life, Dr. Hsu has been dedicating himself to serving others though he is not good with words.
That is very interesting to see.
No wonder the Buddha teaches us that we must know where the value of life lies.
(For those who do not recognize it)
We should show them the need for wisdom, not just talent and skill.
When we choose the right thing to do, that's wisdom.
When we do the wrong thing, that's foolishness and no matter how gifted you are, your talent alone won't endow your life with value.
It only performs the function.
When it's like that, it doesn't leave anything real and lasting behind.
What do you really leave behind when you

(your skill to make a living in this world?)
Nothing much

Though he is not very well-off and leads a very simple life.
(he firmly and steadfastly)
abides by his ideals and carries them out as his life's mission.
See how he has no doubt about what he should do with his life and because he has no doubts and knows the right direction he moves ahead with courage and willpower.
Such a life is truly a valuable one.

慈濟人醫會醫師在全世界為偏遠貧困地區的居民義診，解除病苦，也因為這份救人的因緣，接引許多大醫王加入慈濟醫療志業，其中，美國慈濟醫療志業執行長許明彰醫師，就是在一次臨危受命，來到美國慈濟義診中心代班，從此讓他找到人生的方向，放下事業，全心投入志業。
證嚴上人讚嘆，許明彰醫師守住使命守住志業，為人群無私無我奉獻的精神。
一次臨時的支援，讓許明彰醫師走入美國慈濟義診中心，從完全不了解慈濟基金會，到放棄原本的開業診所，全心投入慈濟義診中心，即使經濟上不如以往，但是救人的使命感，讓他十五年來始終守志不動。
匯聚起美國慈濟人的善念，慈濟義診中心在1993年11月開幕，之後每年的11月都會訂立一天社區健康日，回饋社區，也為社區民眾的健康把關，溫馨的互動，臉上的笑容就是大家心中的感恩。
有知識的人可以做很多事情，但是有智慧的人才能為眾人做事，大愛無所求的付出，就能找到人生真正的價值。
