"No matter rain or shine, I'll do Tzu Chi's work just like when I used to sell vegetables
Even on a typhoon day, I was doing recycling.
If Master saw it, she'd feel very bad for us because the wind and rain were so fierce.
I was almost blown away.
But I still persevered.
That's the kind of endurance we must learn to have.
It's not easy, but we must learn, right?
We must take the wind, rain, cold and heat.
It's not for nothing that Master loves her recycling volunteers, but we're very grateful because we get so much by joy from the work. "
We just heard what Cai-yun said.
Indeed, seeing the images, my heart does go out to her.
(because she is)
Working out in the wind and rain.
In enduring the elements, she is cultivating the virtue of tolerance and endurance.
Women---
I often feel that women truly lead a hard life.
Every day, we talk about the suffering in life.
Indeed, only by understanding suffering.
can we find true happiness.
This is why when the Buddha first began to expound the Dharma, his first teaching was the Four Noble Truths---
(the teaching about the existence of suffering)
(its cause, and the way to eliminate suffering)
Indeed, learning Buddhism is about understanding the suffering in the world.
That's why, everyday, I talk to you about what suffering is.
In fact, only when we recognize suffering for what it is can we really understand the truths in life.
If we do not understand suffering, then we won't be able to realize the truth.
So, we need to understand the reality of suffering.
Only when we recognize that we're suffering will we discover the ignorance & delusions we have which makes us fall into temptation so that we to astray and cannot find our way back.
Look at Cai-yun.
She got married when she was eighteen.
Soon after she gave birth to her first child, her husband went to fulfill his military service.
So, she had to work to support the family
provide money to her husband and raise her child at the same time.
(Her husband was sometimes violent to her)
One time, he grabbed her hair and banged her head on the floor until she had a concussion.
Cai-yun said that after she got treated for the concussion.
She immediately went back to selling vegetables.
See, that was the kind of life she had.
During her first month after giving birth, where women usually stay home to recover,
She had to go out to sell vegetables.
After her husband came back from the military, she organized a gambling group through which she could earn a lot of money easily.
Yet, she and her husband often quarreled.
If her husband hit her when they quarreled, Cai-yun would call her sister.
Fortunately, her sister is a Tzu Chi commissioner.
So, she would share my teachings with Cai-yun.
If we accept our bad karma willingly, (it'll be over more quickly.
If not, we add to it.)
After she understood this, she's more accepting of her lot.
So, gradually, she started to join Tzu Chi and do recycling work.
(We want to take Tzu Chi training classes)
Before we started the training classes, I told my wife:
Since we're now doing Tzu Chi's work. We should quit the gambling group.
These hands of mine collected charity donations and gambling money at the same time.
(That's not good)
So, I quit.
Tzu Chi saved me, so I'm very grateful.
I'm very grateful to Master.
She picked me up out of the garbage.
"We, your disciples, shall never forget"
"So, dear Master, please do not worry"
"When I sing this song, I always cry.
I miss Master.
I really, really love Master and I will always be Master's good disciple."
Her husband also changed his bad ways.
Now she and her husband have a good relationship.
Though the recycling is hard work she does it with a broad and open heart.
Look at the financial crisis and its effect on the public.
It is truly worrying.
Some people have been (plunged into despair) because of their financial losses or their unemployment and chose to end their lives.

He was a highly educated person and had previously worked for very large, successful companies and had a high salary.
However, he had been unemployed for several months.
He felt he could not go on anymore so he decided to kill himself and his family—
His wife, his mother-in-law, and three children.
Then he took his own life and shot himself.
He could not deal with the issue of (his present financial troubles)
So, he sought a way out for his family and himself by taking their lives and his own.
Did things really have to be that way?
It was but his own perception and mindset.

This year, Tzu Chi volunteers in the
(have been doing disaster relief since January)
From January to October, only a space of ten months, at least 48 disasters have happened be it wildfires, hurricanes, or floods.
Tzu Chi volunteers have provided aid in response to these 48 different disasters and this doesn't include Hurricane Ike.
Right now, Tzu Chi volunteers from a few states have joined together to provide aid in the disaster area. They saw grim scenes of devastation.
On one island, over 96 percent of the homes and buildings were destroyed.
(It is a very hard situation for the people)
Tzu Chi volunteers are beginning to offer aid in the disaster areas.
They have planned to give aid in four areas.
These past two days, they have already given aid in two disaster areas and they are continuing the aid work.
They saw the ruins of the disaster.
The land was covered with the remnants of damaged houses and furniture which the floodwaters or fierce winds had carried to their present location.
But at the same time, there was a terrible stench because there were also dead fish lying about.
From this we see that it isn't only people on land who suffered disaster but even fish.
How powerful and destructive the forces of nature can be.
It is truly terrifying to think of.
Though Tzu Chi had begun providing aid, those affected by the disaster number over 70,000.
Think about it.
This is really a frightening disaster.
Moreover, another hurricane has formed in the Pacific.
It's a category 2 hurricane and is heading toward the west coast of

Nature's strong winds and high waves can destroy the land of a wealthy country.

Many feel very worried and anxious.

We don't know how many people will.

And become ravaged by spiritual disasters.
Natural disasters are devastating enough.
(We don't know how much more devastation)
will result from people's spiritual disasters.
So, we Tzu Chi people must
(diligently walk the right path)
and take solid steps.

有形的天災，真實的生活寫照，還有的這麼一場心靈風暴讓人重視，國際間這一陣子的金融危機，帶來人心不安，後果不堪設想，上人提醒大家，這個時候更是要以佛法入心，化解心中無明貪念。住在雲林的黃彩雲師姐，曾經從事組頭工作，以前跟先丈夫相處也是每天吵吵鬧鬧，直到彩雲師姊跟著身為慈濟志工的姐姐接觸到慈濟後才解開心結。現在的她，是一位快樂的慈濟志工，擺脫心中貪念，活的歡喜自在。
美國金融風暴持續擴大，造成一股失業潮，北歐的冰島、亞洲的日本等等，許多國家同樣受到影響，人心不安，引發的治安危機也浮上檯面。
證嚴上人開示：「有形的災難已經夠苦，再加上那種無形的心靈災難，不知道未來的世界又是怎麼樣，所以我們慈濟人靜思勤行道，慈濟的真實路，人間路應該要好好步步踏實。」
要安定人心，先要步步踏實，雲林慈濟志工黃彩雲，原本從事組頭的投機工作，經濟上過的富裕，生活上卻每天與先生吵架，直到姐姐的牽引接觸到慈濟，才了解付出的快樂，現在和先生每天不畏風雨的做環保，就是希望能盡自己的心力愛護大地。
證嚴上人開示：「我們慈濟人走入了慈濟，為了愛護這一片土地，大家心門打開，少掉了過去的那一分貪念無明，他這個腳踏實地甘願付出，不管是勞其筋力，他都是願意付出。」
靜思勤行道，人人殷勤付出，去除心中貪念，才能讓心靈平靜，勇敢面對，走過有形及無形的災難。
