人間菩提--喜見醫病情

Seeing the staff in our hospitals in Guanshan and Yuli,

I'm filled with gratitude and respect.

I'm grateful that in carrying out our Medical Mission,

They not only treat patients' physical illnesses, but also heal their hearts.

Our medical personnel truly treat the entire community as one big family.

(and treat the residents like family)

So, when the villagers come to our hospital to seek treatment, they'd feel like they're coming home.

Also, every week, whenever our doctors and superintendents have no shifts, they'd pay home visits to the elderly in the community, or those living in the mountain or along the coast, caring for them like family members, because most of the young locals have left for western Taiwan to make a living or start up a business, etc.,

and many of the elderly do no want to leave their hometown to live elsewhere.

The elderly man we saw just now, Mr. Zhong, was a very stubborn man.

His mind was still very clear despite his age.

He had seven children and all of them have very successful careers.

They wanted their father to go live with them but he stubbornly refused saying that he didn't want to burden them.

So, he remained in rural Yuli.

Inevitably, he'd have ailments, but he always turned to herbal medicine.

So, upon seeing this elderly man,

(while on a visit to our care recipients' homes,)

Our doctor from Yuli, Dr. Chang, told him:

"Your hand is swollen. You must go see a doctor"

This grandpa retorted:

"This is a blessing in disguise"

"If I go to see a doctor,"

"then all my years of research"

"into herbal medicine will have been wasted"

See, that was how stubborn he was.

When the doctor said to him:

"But your hand is so swollen"

He replied, "it's your eyes that are swollen"

How adorable this elderly man was.

So, Dr. Chang referred this case to Supt. Chang of our hospital in Yuli.

Supt. Chang went to see this grandpa.

As soon as he saw the grandpa, he bowed 90 degrees to him,

and said to him in Japanese:

"Ohayo Gozaimasu" ("good morning" in Japanese)

The first thing he said to him was in Japanese,

Supt. Chang also bowed very humbly.

When the grandpa saw that, he opened up and was very happy.

Then, Supt. Chang affirmed his herbal medicine, closing the distance between them.

(so that the grandpa could trust him)

Then, he said, " Grandpa,"

"let me take a look at your hand"

The grandpa compliantly showed him his hand.

Supt. Chang then said to him:

"Grandpa, your herbal medicine is very good,"

"but,"

"it might not be suitable for your swollen hand"

"Look, you have a rash from the medicine"

"Do you want to try the medicine I brought?"

The grandpa said, "Okay, okay"

See, he was very compliant and agreed.

Supt. Chang began cleaning his wound.

He put ointment on it and bandaged it up.

From then on, Supt. Chang would often visit him.

"Your hand is alright now?"

"Yes."

"Everything is fine?"

"Everything is fine"

The superintendent cares very much about me.

He comes to see me often.

He worries that I might have problems, so he comes to see me frequently.

"No matter what kind of knife you use, just be careful."

"Just don't cut myself."

"That's right. Don't get hurt."

"If you hurt yourself, we'd feel really bad"

"If I got injured, it'll be painful."

Right, andif you suffer, we'd feel very bad too.

So, Supt. Chang in Yuli had been looking after this grandpa had been looking after this grandpa.

After a period of time, Supt. Chang began worrying about his living on his own so he suggested to his children that he should have someone to look after him.

So, his children brought him to live with them.

But, at the end of August this year, this grandpa passed away.

Fortunately, we have such a hospital in Yuli where doctors willingly look after the elderly residents like their own parents and grandparents.

Supt. Chang starts to see patients at 6 a.m. every day because most people in Yuli are farmers and they'd like to see the doctor before they start the day's work.

The hospital remains open until 10 p.m.

Supt. Chang does these early and night shifts himself.

(On October 1 and 2 when our hospitals)

were giving free flu vaccines to children and the elderly Supt. Chang woke up at 4 a.m.

and left home at 5 a.m. to go to the communities and remote areas to help give the elderly people vaccinations.

See, isn't this due to his sense of mission?

Isn't that like the heart of the Buddha who sees all beings in the world as his children?

Supt. Chang truly treats the elderly like his own parents and grandparents.

(It's truly very touching to see)

It is the same at our hospital in Guanshan.

Take a look at our hospital there.

It's very small, but it is a very well-equipped hospital.

During a high school graduation trip last year, a girl was involved in a major biking accident.

Because the girl had injured her head and suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage, it would have been too late if they were to send her to Hualien.

Fortunately, there is our hospital in Guanshan, so she was quickly sent there.

When she arrived, her pupils had dilated and she was in very critical condition.

After receiving emergency surgery from our doctor at Guanshan, she has recovered fully with no brain damage.

She can move about and is as healthy as she used to be.

After recovering from their injuries, she also got into university.

So, she returned to Guanshan with her parents to thank our doctor.

Seeing such a warm relationship between doctor and patient truly makes me very happy.

It is fortunate we have a hospital in Guanshan where doctors, with their wondrous skills were able to save her life.

It truly is very heartwarming to see.

Turning to Sichuan, China---

They're off for national holidays this week, so this group of young volunteers have gathered together to visit the elderly living all by themselves.

(These are the elderly that our volunteers)

(had cared for after the earthquake in May)

"Don't eat too spicy."

"Eat more vegetables and fruit"

"Drink more water. Come out more"

"We went to interact with them"

"and see how they are doing"

"Doing this is more meaningful than hanging out"

"Will you keep on doing this?"

"Yes"

See how we can sow seeds of love in people's hearts and minds.

(After we've sown the seeds.)

It requires everyone themselves to nurture the seeds like farmers.

We also need living bodhisattvas serving as farmers to sow the seeds first.

This group of children are truly the hope of the future.

See, our good heart can impact the world.

(The seeds of love we sow in people's hearts)

will mature into many fruits.

The Sutra of Innumerable Meanings speaks of how one seed can give rise innumerable seeds and innumerable seeds come from one seed.

Every one of us is that one seed and every one of us can give rise to innumerable good seeds.

If everyone can do so, won't the world be free from disasters, society be filled with peace and harmony and people care for one another like family?

Indeed, what we see truly touches us deeply and fills our hearts with gratitude.
