人間菩提--開鑿心靈寶藏

As long as we give rise to one wholesome thought.

Numerous unwholesome thoughts will not arise and we won't develop more bad habits or tendencies.

(or form bad affinities with others)

That is why we must nurture wholesome thoughts at all times.

First & foremost we should do this by being filial.

So, every year, Tzu Chi volunteers will hold many activities to honor Senior Citizens' Day.

They not only take part in these events themselves but they also bring young people along with them as a form of education.

Our adult volunteers would bring our young volunteers from primary school up to college to go interact with the elderly.

Tzu Chi volunteers would care for the elderly themselves, setting an example for the young people to follow.

While serving there, our young volunteers come to see that the elderly people there are actually very lonely.

Living there in the home for the elderly every day, they're surrounded by old people.

Seeing that, these young people would wonder why these elderly people can't live at home and be cared for by their children and enjoy the love and joy of family life.

As I often share with you, many people have asked me why I don't want to build homes for the elderly and I'd tell them that.

I believe the best place for the elderly is the homes of their children so that they can have their children or grandchildren around them.

Some people would say:

"I have to work every day"

"I don't have time to take care of my parents"

If that's the case, we've set up an elderly day care center in our hospital in Hualien where people can bring their elderly parents in the morning and pick them up after work.

With that, the elderly can go home every day and be with their family.

What makes up even happier to see is that the elderly "go to work" too while their children go to work during the day.

Where are the elderly off to work to?

To or recycling stations.

Recycling stations are the best day care centers for the elderly.

Working there, they can help care for the Earth by collecting and sorting recyclables.

so that these recyclables can be processed and made into something useful again.

From the work they do,

(they'd feel they are still useful)

as they can still put their life to good use.

Indeed, every one of us must love and respect ourselves.

Even in our old age, we can still be of use if we're willing to give of ourselves.

As long as old people can have this perspective.

(and not think that they're useless)

And would stay on the right path in life---

Within each of us, there's a true nature that is clean, without any impurities.

This is the priceless treasure within each of us.

It's everlasting and does not wither with age.

It is always there.

But, who can uncover this priceless treasure?

Ourselves. Only when we work hard to uncover this treasure within ourselves can we bring it forth and bring out our potential.

So, we must work hard to help people understand this concept, and to sow seeds of love in them.

Take a look at our volunteers in Penang, Malaysia.

They follow our footsteps very closely and carry out all four of Tzu Chi's missions very diligently in Malaysia.

They do very well in the Mission of Charity which also goes hand-in-hand with the Mission of Medicine.

Many of he locals there are very poor and the food they eat are probably very salty or spicy.

So, many people suffer from kidney failure and require dialysis treatment.

However, dialysis is a life-ling treatment and costs a lot of money.

How are we to help (those who cannot afford it)

So they can also lead normal and productive lives?

With that in mind, our volunteers began planning to set up a free dialysis center.

After our first dialysis center opened, could it serve all with such a need?

No, it couldn't.

There were too many impoverished people.

So, our volunteers raised their concerns with me and I told them:

"You can speak to the local hospitals to see if"

"They can take in the more severe cases"

"while we pay the expenses for them"

"Ask if the hospitals can treat the patients"

"for us and give us discounts so that"

("we can care for those in need together")

"This way,"

"patients can have dialysis in other hospitals"

"while we cover the costs for them"

Currently, the total number of patients treated at our three dialysis centers is close to 100, and more than 50 patients are receiving treatment in other hospitals with our aid.

And ever since our first dialysis center was set up 11 years ago over 2,000 patients have been inspired by Tzu Chi's love and are serving as our volunteers.

Some of the funding for our dialysis centers come from charity bazaars which our dialysis patients helped organize.

Another 30 percent of the funding for the dialysis centers comes from selling recyclables.

So, recycling truly does a lot of good.

In Taiwan, the money from selling recyclables goes toward supporting Da Ai TV, and in Malaysia, the money from selling recyclables goes toward supporting the dialysis centers.

So, when many people come together to do the same work, they create a powerful force.

After being helped, these bodhisattvas receiving dialysis treatment can also give of themselves to help others in return.

For that, I am truly very grateful.

I am also very grateful to the staff at the dialysis centers.

Despite being of different religions, they work with one heart to serve those in need.

Among them is a nurse who came to work for us five years ago from the dialysis center of another hospital.

One time, she met a dialysis patient.

She is a very devout Muslim.

See, she has been here for five years now.

She has even sent three of her children to attend our kindergarten.

She said that her children have learned a lot at our kindergarten as the teachers have taught them very well.

All in all, wherever Tzu Chi volunteers are, they always give of themselves with love and mindfulness.

Indeed, in all parts of the world this form of "modern Buddhism" can be practiced where we go into the community with the Buddha's principles to spread and inspire love.

So, in life, there is nothing we can't achieve.

All it takes is time and effort.

I thank everyone for giving of yourselves with love and care to create such a world of Great Love---

the world of Tzu Chi.

I am truly very grateful.
