It is always our earnest hope that this world we're living in can become a pureland upon Earth.
But when can we turn this wish into reality?
It all depends on people's minds---
If people's hearts and minds are not purified how can peace and harmony preside over this world and society?
So, it is very important to look after our minds.
In view of the current global financial crises people's minds are filled with anxiety and unrest.
Seeing that, we should again make organized efforts to help bring peace to people's minds.
(like we did in 2001)
(In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we)
Launched the "Spread the Seeds of Love" campaign
(As part of their efforts to inspire love,)
Tzu Chi volunteers mobilized to go door-to-door and interact with people.
They gave out Tzu Chi Monthly magazines and Jing Si Aphorisms bookmarks or paper rolls.
They also encouraged people to watch Da Ai TV rather than watch news filled with (controversies and scandals, etc.)
Which cause panic and anxiety.
They did all-this to calm people's minds.
Also, in April 2004, Tzu Chi volunteers in Wenshan district of Taipei began promoting Jing Si Aphorisms
(by pasting up Jing Si Aphorisms in storefronts)
Ever since then, all the way up until now such an initiative has been continued all across
So far, this initiative is being carried out in eight countries across the world.

They paste up Jing Si Aphorisms in both English and Chinese in the shops run by the local people and further use the opportunity to explain what the Jing Si Aphorisms mean as they can inspire and purify people's hearts.
Nearly every store owner was very happy to have our Jing Si Aphorisms pasted up in their stores.

To make the start of the event they even held a ceremony by the roadside.
May people's hearts become more pure.
May society be filled with peace and harmony.
May the world be free of disasters.

That's right.

I now officially declare this campaign launched.
As we can see, some of our volunteers are holding a Jing Si Aphorism in their hands.
What is the first one we see?
"Getting angry is to punish yourself"
"with others' mistakes"
See, even Dr. Leh read out the Jing Si Aphorism he finds most useful.
Which is not to punish yourself with other people's mistakes.
Everyone shared the Jing Si Aphorism they found most useful to them.
So, it's not impossible for people's minds to become calmer and more peaceful.
Remember the Jing Si Aphorism.
"There is always one too few 'good kids'"
"and one too many 'bad kid'"
and how it influenced an elementary student who upon thinking of the Aphorism promptly took a step back from the video game arcade that he was about to set foot in and instead decided to be good and go home.
This was an elementary student in Pingdoing.
See, a simple phrase can influence a person's perspective, and a person's perspective can affect his whole life.
So, we truly must work hard to share Jing Si Aphorisms with others.
How are we to pacify and calm people's minds?
Though there is a global financial crisis now and unemployment rates are the worst they've been in along time.
However, if everyone could live more simply and keep a peaceful heart---
Calming or minds and stilling our anxious thoughts……
If we can live a more simple, modest life keep our minds calm and peaceful, and
Face all that happens with an equanimous mind.
We should be able to make it through this financial crisis.
So, whenever we meet with adverse circumstances.
We should first settle our minds and accept the fact that for the time being we must live more frugally.
If we can settle our minds like that this financial crisis will run its course and end soon.
What's most important is cultivating ourselves abiding by our duties leading a diligent and frugal lifestyle and returning to the fundamentals to manage our households well.
That will be a blessing for all of society.
If everyone could abide by their duty and take good care of their families, naturally,
(there'd be peace and harmony in society)
If everyone could do this, then society would not be in state of unrest.
So, everyone must truly abide by their duties be self-disciplined, and uphold common decency.
Now with this financial crisis, we should take this opportunity to seriously reflect.
How can we pacify and calm people's minds?
Every one of us must discipline ourselves and abide by common decency.
Only then can we improve
To have a booming economy with high employment good relations with other countries are important.
So, we mustn't tarnish the image of
So, everyone must abide by the fundamental principles and look after their family.
If everyone could do so, that'd be a true blessing for all.
So, everyone must use their wisdom be diligent, and encourage one another.
We must encourage ourselves and one another.
So that we can all be rich and healthy, both physically and spiritually.

Lately, haven't I been sharing with you.
How our volunteers encourage those we're helping to give of themselves as well?
Tzu Chi volunteers would encourage the poor to do so by sharing with them that although they're living in poverty.
They are still able to give and help others.
So, we must have wisdom and be diligent.
Only those who have wisdom and are diligent can be healthy both physically and spiritually and have the strength and wealth to help others because they are not greedy.
(and live within their means)
(and so they are able to help others)
Such is to cultivate both blessings and wisdom.
When we cultivate both blessings and wisdom we'll be able to attain enlightenment.
Everyone, to safely get through this global financial crisis------
Rather, it is a spiritual crisis……
The only way we can get through this crisis safely is for everyone to lead a simple and frugal life with a peaceful, settled mind.
If we can be this way, we'll come out from the crisis unscathed.
Everyone, in life, eight or nine things out of ten do not go as we wish.
When we can lead a simple and frugal life and have peaceful minds naturally, we won't give rise to so many desires and wants, and such a financial crisis would not arise.
Such a crisis actually originates from our mind.
So, we must quickly work to encourage people to lead a simple & frugal life and settle their minds.
So that people can have a peaceful mind with less desires.
It is my hope that everyone can be mindful in helping people to get through the crisis this time.

清平生活息風暴
修心守分須克己

勤簡知足為大富
金融風暴，衝擊全球經濟；企業倒閉或者裁員引發失業潮，造成人心不安。證嚴上人表示，這個時候最重要的是，大家要懂得修心安分、勤儉務實，人人假如能用清貧就是清淡平心，把這個心平安、安心下來，用這種的心態來面對人間，應該就可以治療這一番的風暴。
金融風暴蔓延，衝擊全球經濟；企業倒閉引發失業潮，連帶造成人心惶惶。證嚴上人回想起七年前，當年也是天災人禍不斷，美國九一一事件後，社會動盪、人心更不安。為了消弭仇恨與紛爭，慈濟開始了愛灑人間運動，希望募集一人一善心，世間祥和消免災難。
七年來，全球慈濟人穿梭大街小巷，成功在不同國家推廣好話一條街。就像菲律賓，長久以來交通狀況不良，加上天氣炎熱，容易發生事故、引發衝突。慈濟人就把靜思語貼在車上，和司機分享，期盼潛移默化下，以平和心化解仇恨。
心存善念，心就會平、氣就會和；人人守本分，回歸儉樸，清淨心多造福，社會自然消弭災難、祥和平安。
