Tzu Chi Moms and Dads in Tzu Chi's Education
Everything can be created over the course of time, (but it all starts from)
a single thought and conviction.
It's been 19 years, since our nursing college opened in 1989.
Time really flies.
I remember that is 1986 when our hospital opened, the thought of (establishing a nursing school) entered my mind as I found that eastern
in medical resources and personnel.
So, after our hospital was built in Hualien, I found that it was hard to find nurses in eastern

On July 31, 1988, construction work for our nursing college started.
At the same time, we also began to recruit students.
On September 17, 1989, our nursing college was officially opened.
For the first semester, there were only 108 students.
After our nursing college opened, I wished for the students to have guidance from others besides their teachers.
I truly wanted to nurture virtue in these students and teach them about truth, goodness, and beauty.
It was my hope that through our education, these nursing students can become
well-balanced individuals who can
(fulfill their many roles well with virtue)
To do that, having just our faculty staff was not enough.
So, on October 25, 1989, the Yi-de program was set up.
(where we invited our commissioners)
(to mentor our nursing students)
At the time, our Yi-de program members were entrusted with the mission of
setting an example of virtue and character for the students and enabling the students to feel that they are part of a family at school.
So, we needed commissioners of virtue & character to serve as Tzu Chi moms.
At the time, 36 commissioners were selected.
Not only were there Tzu Chi moms, there were also Tzu Chi sisters,
(Tzu Chi commissioners who weren't married)
So, please bear in mind that there were only 36 Tzu Chi moms and sisters in the first year of our program.
How precious they were.
And what about now?
I know right now at our Jing Si Hall, over 400 Tzu Chi moms and dads are there attending classes today.
(in 1999, when our nursing college)
(became a technical college)
(and started to recruit male students)
We invited our Tzu Cheng members to take part in mentoring our students so that
the children could have both a mom and a dad.
So, it's now known as the Ci-yi program.
My hope was that entrepreneurs who are exemplars in their field or Tzu Cheng members of exemplary character could join the program to interact with our students.
Though they cannot guide the students academically, they are full of love and can
be a good model for the students to emulate.
So, altogether we have around 700 Tzu Chi moms and dads looking after our university students.
Including the 400 or so looking after the students at our Tzu Chi College of Technology.
There are over 1,000 of them in total.
So, our Mission of Education began with the establishment of our nursing college, which started from a single thought and conviction.
I'm truly very grateful for the love and support of our Tzu Chi volunteers.
It has now been 19 years since our nursing college opened for term in September 1989 and 14 years since our

The Ci-yi program also expanded.
Not only are there Tzu Chi moms and dads for our technical college and university there are also Tzu Chi moms and dads for our elementary school and middle school.
Our Mission of Education includes schools from primary school to college, and every school now has Tzu Chi moms and dads.
We also have two schools in
So, in total, we have six educational facilities, and altogether, there are close to 2,000.
Tzu Chi moms and dads looking after the students in these six establishments.
We are truly a very big family.
The students that have graduated from every school of this large Tzu Chi family
are all very outstanding professionals.
Of those who've graduated from our nursing college some are now supervisors.
Others are head nurses already.
They all occupy very senior positions.
See how they've shouldered the duties of our medical mission and are guiding younger nurses and caring for patients.
Seeing how they've matured and are carrying on this relay of love.
I'm truly very happy.
What about students at our college of medicine?
They have also received the care and mentorship of Tzu Chi moms and dads.
These Tzu Chi moms and dads treat these students like their own children.
Take Mr. Zheng for example.
Actually, Mr. Zheng is a dialysis patient.
He is a long-time Tzu Chi volunteer.
Back when we were building the hospital, he was already a Tzu Chi volunteer.
(He also dedicated a lot of effort)
(When we were building our schools)
despite being in poor health.
At the time, (because they were childless)
I encouraged him and his wife to serve as a Tzu Chi mom and dad.
(That would be no different from)
(having children of their own)
They even told me they were thinking of adopting.
I told them, "That's not really necessary, but"
"it's up to you."
Later, they did serve as a Tzu Chi mom and dad and had a group of children.
They were very happy and shared with me that these children were just like their own.
(So, there was truly no need)
(for them to adopt children)
(They could care for these students)
(with the same kind of love)
"Dad, how do you feel today?"
"Do your legs hurt today?"
"No, my legs don't hurt now"
"Are you still doing physical therapy?"
Dad, let me give you the card from Youg-jie.
My son, Yong-jie, is in Kinmen now.
He's doing military service.
He called me a few days ago and said it's really cold there.
I'm really worried about him.
He doesn't really know how to look after himself.
I'm afraid he'll get cold.
Once my legs are better, I'll go to Kinmen to see him and bring him some warm clothes keep him warm.
See how he cares for the children with such love and these children have learned from his example of love and are applying it in their workplace by dedicating themselves with a sense of mission and benefiting others through their skills.
That's what truly matters.
See, in every one of our schools, from elementary school to college.
There are Tzu Chi moms and dads caring for the students and setting a good example for them.
This is to instill good character in our students as well as moral principles and ethics.
I hope everyone can take this as their mission.
