   人間菩提--心靈輔導•愛之甘露

We see that wildfires have flared up in Southern California again.

Local officials estimated that the fires will not be able to be contained for another four days at the earliest.

Hearing that we don't know how much of the Earth' forestland is going to be destroyed this time and how much greenhouse gases will be produced.

People often describe the U.S. as a heaven on Earth.

Yet, disasters also happen in this country.

In recent years, the U.S. has been hit by natural and manmade disasters one after the other.

So, in recent years, Tzu Chi volunteers in the U.S. have been tirelessly providing aid to

Those affected by disaster.

Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan and every part of the world often speak of "spreading the seeds of love".

In fact, we first launched the "Spread the Seed of Love" campaign in 2001 after the 9/11 attack in the U.S. and the bombardment in Afghanistan.

That year, there were also more natural disasters than usual.

Seeing that, we called on everyone to bring forth their love and do good hoping that everyone could give rise to love and wholesome thoughts and use love to dissolve hatred and other mental impurities, delusion , and afflictions as these are the roots of manmade disasters.

(Although as individuals)

(we may seem insignificant)

our love is like a drop of moisture that can moisten the land, just like the dew.

Right now, people's minds are as if in a dust storm.

When the wind of ignorance blows, it stirs up the dust in our field of mind making everything blurry and causing us to lose sight of our direction.

That is why we hope that everyone's mind can be moistened by the Dharma.

The Dharma like water.

We need to (return to) the Dharma which is the pure, true nature of love inherent in every one of us.

As we know, Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas, U.S.A. on Sept. 13 affecting more than 29 counties in Texas and leaving many areas severely devastated.

It has been one month and a day since the disaster truck and those affected still don't know where they are to go.

They have lost everything they have, (including their homes)

How are we to help them?

Tzu Chi volunteers cannot bear to see them suffer, so they went to distribute aid to people in four places.

During the aid distributions, Tzu Chi volunteers not only provided the people with loving care and support, but they also shared with them the humble beginnings of

Tzu Chi an organization from Taiwan and how it started over 40 years ago with 30 housewives putting 50 NT cents a day into bamboo banks.

Through their actions, our volunteers showed how everyone possessed the same strength to do good and that strength is love.

Such love does not distinguish between race or religion and everyone is able to give of this love to others.

Mr. Les Love, a hurricane victim, was very touched by what he heard.

So, he collected a coin bank from our volunteers and on his way home he began soliciting donations from people he came across and told them about Tzu Chi.

He knew that our volunteers would leave the area after the aid distribution was over so he quickly collected donations from people in the community be it a dime or a dollar.

Before our aid distribution came to an end he brought back a coin bank full of donations.

He had solicited a total of US$186.64.

So, right there at the distribution site he began calling upon people to pass on and circulate the love they had received.

So, these people who had come to receive aid also began donating their spare change and putting it into the coin banks.

Though Tzu Chi provided them a cash card they can still contribute and they donated the spare change they had.

Within on time, they had filled two coin banks.

These two full coin banks were a result of people's love pooled together.

See such a cycle of love.

Indeed, tiny drops of water can form a river.

I'm sure everyone has come to understand that

(when their love is pooled together,)

(they can have great strength)

Seeing the love of these aid recipients is truly very touching.

With everyone doing good, every tiny drop of love in every heart can help to moisten the field of people's minds.

There was another gentleman whose birthday happened to be that day so our volunteers sang Happy Birthday to him.

He was very touched.

Having lost everything to the hurricane he received the well-wishes from volunteers from a Buddhist organization.

This brought him much joy.

He also spoke of how he had lost both his legs in the Vietnam War.

See what a heartwarming image it is.

It truly is very touching.

In the footage, we also saw a group of people in Tent City of Seattle whom Tzu Chi volunteers have been caring for since 2006.

They are not the typical homeless.

They are there because (they have trouble finding affordable housing)

Tzu Chi volunteers provide them with love and care as they cannot bear to see them go cold and hungry.

The love they show is truly very touching.

No matter what problems these people encounter as long as there is love there is hope.

(And when people's love is inspired)

They'll be able to give of themselves and benefit others as well.

When people's minds have been transformed.

(and reside in goodness)

Natural disasters will naturally diminish and gradually, there'd be peace and harmony in society and people would live in safety.

Indeed, both natural and manmade disasters are terrifying.

Much of the financial difficulties now is due to people's previous overindulgence.

If everyone could practice self-discipline and be diligent and frugal how would there be a financial crisis today?

Everyone, I often say we should be a Bodhi forest springing from the same root.

This Bodhi is about awakening to the Truth and bringing forth our enlightened nature, full of pure love.

This Bodhi seed can grow into a fruit-bearing tree in turn spreading many seeds.

Take Mr. Love for example.

Despite being in need of help, he has already taken action and has been calling on everyone to give of their love.

See how he brought the coin bank full of coins back to our volunteers.

See, though he is still receiving help, he can encourage others to give of themselves.

So, don't think that you don't have the ability to help others.

Every one of us has this ability.

As long as we have love, this love will give us strength to carry out acts of compassion.

(All it takes is to inspire such love in people)
