人間菩提--永不乾涸的水

(What we see in the footage is Petra,)

(the ancient capital city of the Nabataean)

(which was annexed by the Roman Empire in 106 AD)

What about its people?

What we do know is that the tribe that Tzu Chi volunteers have been aiding are the Bedouins.

Around 1,900 years ago, the Nabataeans,

(who some believe to be ancestors of the Bedouins)

lived in the beautiful city of Petra

(They had advanced water systems)

And the city was beautifully constructed with exquisite carvings along the mountain faces.

Today, Petra, which lies in southern Jordan is a very popular tourist attraction known as "a rose-red city"

How beautifully crafted their water systems were.

Back then, over 1,900 years ago, they were able to build such a sophisticated water supply system to transport water to the city.

But in 106 AD, the Roman Emperor Trajan annexed the Nabataean Kingdom as part of a military campaign.

Then I thought to myself:

" That's srange"

" How far exactly is Rome from this place?"

From the map, I saw that in fact there were many middle eastern countries in between.

And yet, they came all the way to Nabataea.

and conquered this kingdom.

Though the kingdom ceased to exist, the remains of the kingdom's ancient city can still be seen today.

How was it that around 2,000 years ago, a kingdom with such advanced engineering

and magnificent rock carvings fell demise to another empire who came and conquered it?

It's truly unbelievable.

Why can't people live in peace with one another?

Living on this Earth, human beings are able to make such beautiful carvings.

Why must people seek to bring harm and to kill one another?

But I trust the descendents of the Nabataeans

(are still around today)

This ancient city of Petra is truly very beautiful with the Dead Sea to the north of it and its beautiful desert land.

It's just very dry and arid

and full of rock mountains.

(The people who settled there)

(were the nomadic Bedouin tribe)

This group of people truly lead a very hard life in Jordan.

For many years now, Tzu Chi volunteers have been providing aid to these people regularly especially during the month of Ramadan.

as it is a significant time of the year for them.

At this time every year. Tzu Chi volunteers would bring material supplies to them.

So, over these years, our volunteers have formed a close bond with them.

Apart from providing them with material supplies, our volunteers have also taught them to give of themselves and help those in greater need than they are.

In the footage, we see a man who appears to be the head of this Bedouin tribe.

He also presented a coin bank to our volunteers.

Indeed, throughout these years, other than providing them with material supplies,

Our volunteers have also instilled in them the idea that despite being poor, they can

Still sow blessings by helping others.

That is why the head was able to save up money bit by bit in the coin bank we gave him and then present the coin bank to our Tzu Chi volunteers when they went.

It truly is very moving to see.

(By donating the money, this money will be)

(pooled together with other donations)

(and can be used to benefit people)

However, there are many flies in that place.

(which keep pestering them)

We also see flies going into the children's mouths while they were eating.

How exactly can they live like this?

Everyone, it's truly a miserable life.

Seeing this, we must cherish what we have.

For over a thousand years the Bedouins have continued to live on such arid land where

on such arid land where every drop of water is as valuable as gold every drop of water is as valuable as gold.

Shouldn't we cherish the water we have?

Water can bring prosperity to a country because only with water can people farm and grow an abundance of crops.

And, when people have food to eat, they will have the energy to do work.

That is why life cannot be sustained without water nor can a country.

So, every one of us must truly cherish the water we have

(Look at the Bedouins)

See how far they have to travel to dig for water and how people and animals drink from the same water source where there's little water & it's also very murky.

See how they dig into the soil to see if there is any water to be used.

We can see how hard their life must be.

So, in seeing how others live, we should know how truly blessed we are.

I often share with everyone the three ways that the Buddha used to guide living beings.

During the time the Buddha lived in this world, he not only taught by example,

But also applied many different ways to show people how they could cultivate themselves tame their minds, nurture goodness in themselves and give of themselves to benefit others.

(Moreover, the Buddha also guided people to)

See the laws of nature where all material things go through the process of formation, continuation, decay, and annihilation.

And while dedicating themselves to serving others people would also realize that

Those who can help others are the most blessed.

So, in everything we do and the principles we learn we can witness the Buddha's teachings in them.

So, we must have faith in the Buddha's teachings and be sincerely pious and vigilant at all times.

In fact, the course of a typhoon is affected by the location of high pressure areas.

If the air pressure increases, the typhoon will be pushed away from its original route and deviate further away from land. If so people can be safe.

(But what if it just so happens that)

(the locations of high pressure and)

(low pressure are such)

(that the typhoon will eventually hit Taiwan?)

It's truly very worrying.

All in all, we must take good care of our mind at all times, keep an upright mind, be sincerely pious, and on the alert.

That is very important.

So, everyone, please heighten your vigilance and keep a close watch of the typhoon

which is gradually gaining in strength and moving toward Taiwan in two days.

In two days, the typhoon will be affecting Taiwan.

So, that'll be Sunday. In the meantime, it is heading toward Taiwan.

Please make all possible preparations to guard against the typhoon and be a sincerely pious and on guard.

Thank you all.

May everyone pray with a heart of sincerity.

Today's Jing Si Aphorisms:    In the face of adversity, be grateful, for such opportunities do not come by easily.

今日靜思碰到逆境時, 應心生感激, 這是可遇而不可求啊!
