人間菩提--自立立人貧中富

In Malaysia, we see the paragon of a humane doctor serving in remote, impoverished areas where there are no doctors or medical resources.

These may be up in the mountains or are rural towns situated very far away.

But no matter how far away it is, Tzu Chi members will go there.

Sometimes they have to take a ferry or drive for several hours.

But they do it all willingly.

So long as they have discovered an impoverished village, they will go, no matter what and humane doctors will always go to treat the sick no matter how remote.

Or impoverished the place is.

Some of the people may have chronic conditions but due to lack of medical care, it grows into a serious illness or even causes death.

Their suffering is truly very great.

But it isn't only the patients who suffer.

The family members also suffer a great deal.

But so long as people have altruistic love and

(can some together for a common goal)

Such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, etc join together with Tzu Chi volunteers including entrepreneurs, etc.---

These altruistic people feel great joy and peace in being able to give.

When they dedicate themselves sincerely and go to such places of suffering to give treatment that can save lives that is really a most wonderful thing.

(Sometimes they also provide check-ups)

And if chronic ailments are diagnosed, this team wll go there regularly to

provide the needed treatment.

While the ailment is treated, most importantly the person is also cared for.

The person is the most important.

Some people not only have a physical condition.

Mentally and spiritually, they are also ill.

So, these humane doctors not only treat the "body" but also the "person" and the "heart"---the effects of poverty on their spirit.

Besides giving them aid, therefore we also help open up their heart.

We'd let them know

(that they too can help others)

(just by making a small donation everyday)

(This is a most effective healer of)

the illness of poverty

In Malaysia, in the village of Pedu, Tzu Chi has provided aid for ten years because this village is very poor.

The population is over one thousand.

But there, Tzu Chi has held over 20 large-scale free clinics.

Altogether, the doctors have provided over 4,000 medical consultations.

Through this, the residents have become very close to Tzu Chi people.

"Sometimes, when you come a little later we'd all ask about where you are"

"So, you can see how welcomed you are."

Everyone has become like one family.

(Volunteers as well as medical personnel) will go there, bringing medicine to provide care and medication to the people.

Last year, the volunteers began to promote the idea of putting in a coin everyday into a coin bank to save up money to help others.

Around four months later, the residents of the village, all brought their coin banks and one could hear the sounds of coins as they are dropped in just like drops of water falling in an urn.

Over time, a sizable amount has been accrued and everyone is very happy because they feel that they too have the ability to help others.

In the village, there is a resident who receives government aid Tzu Chi is also helping him.

After hearing about the coin banks, he donates money every day.

(Before, he felt no hope in life)

and felt little motivation to continue living because his wife has passed away and he has been plagued by illness.

However, after encountering Tzu Chi and coming to know that he too can help others he has found new meaning in life.

So, every day, he puts money into the coin bank.

"I will continue to donate."

"every day, until the day I die."

"Ever since I'v been donating money to Tzu Chi."

"I've felt very happy."

and feel more courage to live on.

See, isn't he rich?

He does a good deed everyday and always thinks of helping people.

There is also a young lady like him.

This young lady's family has been receiving Tzu Chi's help and care.

Besides helping her father with medical treatment, Tzu Chi volunteers also helped fix their home.

So, after her father passed away, she made a vow to help other people.

"I want to go to ther hospital to help out."

"My father would be very happy."

"if I go there to help other people."

 Look, is she spiritually rich?

Tzu Chi volunteers also told them about the disasters in Myanmar and China.

 (After learning about them,)

The residents came to realize that there are other people in this world who are suffering difficult times.

Since they are also farmers, they can empathize with the disaster victims.

So they have actively reached out to help.

Such a spirit is one we really should promote.

Let us encourage people to have fewer desires and give of their love.

We also need to promote ways to mitigate the effect of global warming.

The only way to do this is for all humanity to wake up and stop being so wasteful in their daily lives.

Everyone, the size of Typhoon Sinlaku shows how small Taiwan is.

Taiwan is so small that all it takes is one typhoon to cover the entire island.

So, we need to respect and love the earth with our utmost sincerity.

We should practice vegetarianism and pray piously everyday for the climate to be in balance so that we can live in peace and safety.

I'm truly grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers for forming typhoon relief coordination centers at our branch offices all around Taiwan.

I'm also very grateful that our volunteers in every part of Taiwan had spent all day yesterday visiting families under Tzu Chi's care such as the elderly, people who are ill and those who have restricted mobility.

They went to visit them to make sure that they have enough food to last for the typhoon's duration.

They also checked their windows and doors making sure that they are all secure and reminding them to take precautions.

Their care for the elderly feels like the warm care that people would give to the elders of their family.

Yesterday I saw the news about Taiping Middle School in Taichung.

I'm very worried about it.

It was one of the schools we helped build after the 921 earthquake in 1999.

Because it's located in a low-lying area every time it rains, the school would flood.

When it floods, Tzu Chi volunteers would be very busy (helping with the clean-up)

We saw that yesterday they were already pilling up sandbags to prepare for the typhoon.

Everyone, we must be on guard.

If we can prepare ahead of time, we can minimize the damage.

So, let us mindfully prepare for the typhoon.
