人間菩提--人間菩薩遍湧現

 What is today's date?

September 21, the day the big earthquake hit Taiwan 9 years ago.

Nine years ago today was a time of chaos.

Thinking back to that time, the phone calls we received that day were heart-shattering as they all reported what buildings had collapsed and the devastation.

Immediately after the earthquake, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taichung and Nantou County actually all Tzu Chi volunteers mobilized & arrived at the disaster area quickly.

Thinking back to that time, I feel that Tzu Chi volunteers were really brave.

Words cannot describe the kind of compassion and willpower that they had.

Two days after the earthquake happened.

I went to our office in Taichung.

(With donations pouring in)

(from citizens wanting to help,)

There was a mountain of supplies of all kinds piled up in our office.

How was one to sort through them?

It was really a chaotic situation.

Tzu Chi volunteers really worked day and night to help the quake victims.

There isn't enough time for me to recount all the hard work they did.

I stayed in Taichung for about a month coordinating our relief efforts.

What I saw and heard there will always stay in my memory.

The earthquake also damaged a lot of schools so Tzu Chi adopted the rebuilding of schools.

Within a three year period, we helped build 50 schools.

Look at the elementary school in Shinshou.

(one of the schools we helped build)

Children are able to receive their education in a quake-resistant building.

Many classes of students have graduated.

We see how lively and adorable these children are.

Some of them were born after the 921 earthquake.

For students who have graduated, some have moved on to secondary school and some are now in college.

Some former students, who are now in college have joined Tzu Chi as a way to give back.

See how this love is passing on to younger generations.

We see that many people have been inspired by Tzu Chi volunteers.

One of them is the owner of a construction business.

He saw the way Tzu Chi volunteers all came to help the people affected by the earthquake.

He was very touched by them and so he joined Tzu Chi.

I'm head of the school's PTA(parent-teacher assn)

When I saw the way Tzu Chi volunteers sacrificed themselves and devoted their efforts to help rebuild our school.

I was very moved.

So, I decided to join Tzu Chi.

He is a Tzu Chi volunteer now.

He does all kinds of work in Tzu Chi.

He visits care recipients, does recycling and is involved in our association of police officers.

These volunteers give us more strength.

Besides businesspeople, there are also government employees.

There's another volunteer who is a coroner.

At the time, he was at the disaster area to examine the bodies and determine the cause of death.

He saw how Tzu Chi volunteers helped the people how brave they were and the respect they showed the deceased chanting prayers for them.

He was very moved by Tzu Chi volunteers.

I come and help for only a while.

The Tzu Chi volunteers work here for the whole day.

I see how they are always giving of themselves.

I'm very moved.

He therefore joined Tzu Chi.

He lives in Taichung County but works in Nantou County.

Before he goes to work, he comes to our recycling station and does recycling work for 1 to 2 hours.

He does this every day.

Why does he do this?

Because he was inspired by an elderly volunteer.

We see this elderly volunteer.

I've known her for almost twenty years.

In the time that I've known her, she has always suffered from illnesses.

But she is very strong and never lets her illness hinder her from doing Tzu Chi's work.

Despite the pain the illnesses bring her, she accepts all of it with courage.

She uses wisdom to overcome her physical pain so her wisdom-life continues to grow.

The more I do, the more I can contribute.

If I stay home, all I'd be doing would be trying to deal with the pain.

If I do volunteer work, time passes by more quickly.

I'm used to it. Doing this makes me happy.

Her philosophy about life is to make use of her life to do good.

She sees every day she can contribute as a reward.

We also saw a group of recycling volunteers.

They give without asking anything in return.

Even when working under the blazing sun and becoming drenched with sweat they still feel at ease.

After letting their bodies sweat they feel very relaxed and happy.

See, they are living bodhisattvas.

Bodhisattvas are not statues made out of wood or clay and placed high up on the altar.

They are not like that. They are real people who get thirsty and hungry.

When they have the strength, they'd work for the good of the world.

Such is the way of a living bodhisattva.

(and it is this that makes them able to)

inspire and guide people.

And so after the 921 earthquake, many people joined Tzu Chi because they were moved by the way Tzu Chi volunteers cared for survivors.

(They were inspired,)

and now, they're inspiring others in turn.

See how the love gets passed on and starts the cycle of love through people's actions and example and influences our society.

I'm truly very grateful about this.

Thinking of 921 also makes us think of the earthquake in Sichuan, China.

Tzu Chi had sent 18 aid teams to help the survivors there.

People in China also discussed the 921 quake and what was done in its aftermath.

Tzu Chi was also asked to share our experience about what we did for the relief effort and how we helped the survivors.

So, we've shared with them several times what we did to help the disaster area recover.

That was the 921 earthquake.

(When people can help each other,)

(people's lives can be rebuilt)

So, I'm very grateful.

There were so many volunteers helping out.

Because of their collective effort they were able to inspire people.

It was truly moving.

So, we must make good use of our time.

Yesterday, there was an incident on an airplane operated by China Airlines.

The plane encountered turbulence when it was close to the Indonesian island of Bali before it was about of land.

The whole plane was shaking.

Around 30 people were injured.

Our Tzu Chi volunteers in the local area quickly went to the hospital to comfort the injured.

There is also a typhoon approaching.

Roads damaged by the previous typhoon have now reopened.

So, Tzu Chi volunteers went to Lushan to provide aid to our care recipients living there.

There is an old woman living in Yuchin Town who in one of our care recipients.

Her home was flooded by mud.

So, Tzu Chi volunteers went to help clean up homes of the elderly. ill. or impaired.

They provided care and comfort as well as helped clean their homes so they could live in better conditions.

If there are no Tzu Chi volunteers in this society.

(who will help these people?)

I'm very grateful to them.
