Does everyone still remember the Asian Tsunami that hit in 2004, and how Tzu Chi volunteers around the world all mobilized to help in the relief efforts? Aceh province of Indonesia and Sri Lanka both being coastal areas were very severely affected.

In the last three years or so, in Sri Lanka, we've continued to provide support and comfort to the tsunami survivors in Sri Lanka.

(by rebuilding homes and schools for them)

In January of this year, when the secondary school we'd built for them was due to open for term,

Our TIMA members also went to hold a free clinic. Supt. Poon of our hospital in Guanshan and Supt. Chang of our hospital in Yuli who took part in the free clinic came upon Mithushi, a nine-year-old girl. Her mother took her on a 5-hour bs journey o Hambantota to our free clinic. This was because Mithushi had scoliosis and her condition was so serious that her arms and legs

were starting to hurt. Her family was very poor(as hers was a single-parent family)

Her mother had to earn a living for her family and did not have any money to spare for her medical treatment.

So, they came to us for help. After examining Mithushi, Supt. Poon said she needed surgery.

Not just minor surgery but extensive surgery to straighten her spine.

So, her illness required major surgery. Another similar case that was brought to our attention is 15-year-old Madushi.

Her mother is a housewife and she has three brothers and sisters.

Her family is also poor. How could they afford to pay for her medical treatment?

So, Madushi's condition grew worse and worse and by the time she was 15, it was so serious that her spine.

(curved to an angle of 90 degrees)

She was having breathing problems because of it.

Being different from everyone else from a young age, she had very low self-esteem and refused to go to school.

When our doctors went to see her early this year, they found that her condition was more serious than Mithushi.

Because Madushii was already 15 while Mithushi was only 9 and still growing

(and her spine would continue to grow as well)

was having breathing difficulties already.

So, when our volunteers came back, they briefed me on the conditions of these two girls.

When I saw the photos of these two girls, I thought to myself that if surgery could relieve their condition,

then they should quickly get one.

Otherwise, (what would their future be like?)

(Life would be very difficult for them)

(and their condition might continue to worsen)

We couldn't bear for that to happen. So, I asked Ji Yu, our volunteer in Malaysia to think of a way to help these two girls.

After a thorough assessment, they decided to bring these two girls o Malacca, Malaysia and have surgery there.

So, on July.10, Ji Yu and our volunteers in Sri Lanka accompanied. These two girls and their mothers to Malacca and arranged for them to stay in the local Tzu Chi office's guest accommodations, so that they could feel at home.

So that they could feel at home (and have a comfortable stay)

So, these two girls' mothers started off as strangers but ended up caring for and supporting one another.

On July13, 15-year-old Madushi underwent her surgery. The entire surgery went very smoothly and the 90-degree curve of her spine has now been corrected to 38 degrees, so her body is much straighter now.

Her spine is still slightly curved. (as doctors have to correct it bit by bit)

However, when asked what her wish was, she said that she just wanted to be normal like everyone elso

This will of course require much rehabilitation. Nevertheless, what's most important was that we had helped to open up her heart  and she no longer has low self-esteem.

Since her surgery was very successful as soon as she was moved out of the ICU, her mother immediately phoned home to Sri Lanka. Hearing that Madushi's surgery was successful, everyone in her village was very excited and they all sent her their best wishes. All this shows the warmth, that the people of Sri Lanka possess. It is indeed very touching to see such warmth and friendship among people which is truly a very good thing.

Next, it was the nine-year-old Mithushi's turn. She is a very lively and cheery child.

Despite the pain she suffers, she is still full of life.

While waiting to have surgery in Malacca, she spent some time with the kids at Tzu Chi's kindergarten and got along with them very well.

Our kindergarteners in Malacca are very caring and full of love. They may not speak the same language, but we can see how the children could still interact with and care for one another. When our children wanted her to drink water and eat, they would use gestures like this to say:

"Lunch time" or like this to say, "Drink sme tea"

After Madushi underwent surgery, it was then Mithushi's turn.

So, Mithushi underwent surgery around three weeks after Madushi had hers.

And it wasn't until August 30 that both of them could return home.

After being discharged from the hospital, they stayed in Malacca for a period of time to recover from the surgery.

On August 30, both of them were able to return home with a more straightened body.

From the footage, we see them arriving home. See what a joyous celebration was given to welcome them home, and how

the occasion was full of gratitude and well.

See, though they have suffered hardship in life, the seeds of love that have been sown in the fields of their hearts have already begun to sprout. We see them expressing their gratitude toward one another and giving their blessings to one another as well.

See, isn't this place just like a pureland?

Although they are not very well-off, their hearts are full of love and gratitude.

Being content with their simple way of life, they still can lead very happy lives.

Indeed seeing these stories, I am truly grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers worldwide for giving of their love so willingly.

Wherever there are disasters and when Tzu Chi volunteers go there to help, they will leave behind footprints of love that are deeply embedded on that piece of land.

Moreover, wherever our volunteers go, they will spread seeds of love in the hearts of the locals.

(so the locals will also help others)

I truly am very grateful to all Tzu Chi volunteers.

Indeed, seeing such mages of joy that comes from helping others, we are all very touched.
