人間菩提--救護大地之要

The footage we just saw is of Jordan.

Nowadays, many countries around the world are suffering from drought.

Seeing that, we are truly very worried.

In Jordan, nearly 80 percent of its land is arid, One of the country's main attractions is the Dead Sea.

(Because of its high salinity,) people can float leisurely on the water and read a book without sinking.

The scenery there is truly very beautiful.

However, in recent years, the water level of the Dead Sea has continually been dropping.

The deserts have been expanding and becoming drier due to reduced rainfall.

See how beautiful the place used to be.

Why is it continually getting drier?

Because human activities are leading to global warming and rising temperatures

(Why is the effect so evident in Jordan?)

Because there are too many tourists flying in and out of Jordan and traveling around in Jordan by bus.

Even people's body temperatures are contributing.

So, be it pollution from transportation or people's body temperature, much heat is brought into that area.

So, the area keeps getting hotter, the temperature keeps rising, and the drought conditions keep worsening.

So, the water resources in Jordan, in fact in the entire world are continually disappearing.

Speaking of Jordan, the people there truly live very harsh lives.

Because much of it is desert, traveling by car is very difficult.

So, many of the local tourist spots rely on camels as transportation

However, camels are also becoming more difficult to keep.

Because, although camels do not need petrol, they need water.

Camels can withstand hot and dry conditions and can go for days without drinking any water.

But when they do, they drink large amount of it.

So, such effects of desertification truly make it difficult to raise livestock for a living.

As it has become harder for many to continue living nomadically like they did before people have begun to move to the cities.

But life isn't easy in the cities either, because what can they to there to make a living?

So, life is hard on them. There is a family with five children.

Because they couldn't continue raising livestock in the desert, they decided to move to the city.

In the city, they live in a tent area illegally where living conditions are very poor.

Local authorities keep trying to make them leave.

Over the years, Tzu Chi volunteers have been looking after them.

We don't know how much longer they can stay there since they are living there illegally.

Who knows how many more people are living in similar conditions to theirs.

However, over the past 11 years, Tzu Chi volunteers in Jordan have continued to hold large-scale distributions at least twice a year. Out of their respect and love for all lives, our volunteers give of themselves with Great Love hoping that their love can be like the dew.

Small as droplets of dew are they can still moisten the land. We hope that everyone's love can be inspired and perhaps if that can happen, the land can stop becoming more arid. It is indeed very important that we have love.

Take the U.S. for example:

When Hurricane Gustav was approaching, Tzu Chi volunteers throughout the U.S. began praying with utmost piety.

Moreover, Tzu Chi volunteers in Dallas, Texas have been working very mindfully (to help care for the evacuees)

By tomorrow afternoon, everyone will be leaving the temporary shelters.

This time, the government has been very vigilant and active and had mobilized the military and police to help.

After having evacuated nearly 2 million people, a storm curfew was also imposed, (to ensure the security of the city)

The government has truly been very responsible this time. See how the mayor of New Orleans kept calling upon the people to be scared to be concerned and to evacuate as soon as possible. Having such reverence towards Nature is truly very helpful.

See, this time, the people in New Orleans and other affected areas in Texas have been very fortunate.

Although there are damages there have been no major disasters.

So, the damages were minimal(Gustav has become a tropical depression now)

It truly is very incredible. However, earlier, I also saw on Da Ai News that in India for more than half a month now around

3 million people have been left homeless or are living in homes submerged in water.

It truly is unspeakable suffering. The flooding is caused by the river dam breach as a result of continuous heavy rainfall.

Also, only a few days ago, Hurricane Gustav swept through Haiti, and caused severe devastation, and now, Tropical Storm Hanna once again brought much devastation to the people of Haiti.

The Dominican Republic has suffered the same fate.

So, everyone must remain vigilant as it is predicted that Hanna may also be increasing in intensity

and is currently heading towards the northeast coast of the U.S.

So, again, everyone must heighten their vigilance take precautions, and be humbly pious.

Following close behind Hanna is another hurricane, lke

With one hurricane forming after the other, it truly is very worrying.

Yet, places suffering from drought are so dry.

If droughts continue, it will lead to food shortages in many regions around the world.

Strong winds and heavy rain are becoming more common and more intense but such sudden downpour will only cause flooding.

(and is more damaging than helpful)

Mild winds and light rain are becoming rarer and yet what the land needs most are mild winds and light rain to gently moisten the land.

These mild winds and light rain are occurring less and less due to global warming, (and when the wind and rain does come,)

they are usually storms with torrential rain.

So, once the floodwaters recede nothing is left as the water cannot be retained. Look at the people in India who are flooded by water but have no water to drink. The suffering they endure is truly unspeakable. Everyone, this Earth that we live on really needs to be loved & cherished by all of us.

If people continue to live wastefully by wasting water resources

And leading extravagant and self-indulgent lives—

After we've used up all our blessings and created a lot of bad karma, the consequences will be beyond our imagination.

Everyone, we must remain vigilant and truly be cautious and humbly pious.

Only if we love and respect Mother Nature and work to create good karma together can we truly save the Earth.

Today's Jing Si Aphorisms:   People who are preoccupied with past achievements cannot humble themselves.
