人間菩提--因人為而導致天災

In the pursuit of happiness and enjoyment, people would do anything that pleases them.

Looking around the world, we see that all disasters are actually a result of human actions.

Some people may think:

"I'm just one person doing a little bit"

"How can I possibly cause these disasters?"

"and the abnormal climate?"

Yes, you can. Everyone's tiny action counts.

When people give rise to an unwholesome thought,

no matter how tiny it may seem, when pooled together with others,

powerful collective bad karma is created.

I often speak of how living beings share collective karma.

This collective karma is accumulated through every deed done by every individual.

Look at Lushan in Nantou County of Taiwan.

Although the roads have been reopened, the place is not the same as it used to be anymore.

See, so many hotels and buildings were built along the riverbeds or in the mountains.

Was it legal to construct buildings there?

Before these buildings were constructed, there were no relevant regulations to govern it.

Now that misfortune has happened, people began to look into who should be held responsible.

But, it is already too late.

Should those buildings be constructed where they used to be?

(That's something we should reflect upon)

In fact, after the 921 Earthquake hit in 1999, all the mountains in Nantou County have been shaken loose and left in an unstable condition.

So, it will take quite a long period of time for the land to restore itself and become stable again.

For the mountains and the land to recover to its original state, we must give it time to rest and recuperate.

However, after the 921 Earthquake struck, people did not give the mountains time to rest.

Tourists continued to go there for sightseeing as tour bus after tour bus continued to drive up the mountains.

(harming the already injured land)

That is why this time, after the typhoon hit.

Lushan has become so severely devastated.

We also see the disaster situation in Haiti.

Haiti is a very impoverished country.

The people there are so poor that it's heartrending to see or hear of their suffering

See how their suffering is made worse---

They were already suffering from hunger, now with natural disasters hitting them one after another; their days have become very hard to endure.

We walked a long way to get food.

But there were too many people pushing and shoving fighting for the food.

My life is very difficult.

I'm hungry. My child is sick.

We have no place to live in because our house has been washed away.

Up until now, no one came to help us.

Such is the fear, terror, and hunger that they are experiencing.

Look at their life.

They may be very far away from us, but we are living in the same time as them.

I really don't know how to help them.

(as the problem is complicated and large-scale)

With the hardship they're enduring, it's difficult to prevent riots from breaking out.

Sometimes, when food and supplies are given out, people will get pushed and shoved or even get trampled to death.

A few days ago in Indonesia's East Java, a rich family wished to distribute monetary aid to the poor but things got out of control as everyone began pushing and shoving.

Many people were injured or killed.

It is truly heartrending to see, such chaotic conditions.

The intention behind it was good, but it can get quite dangerous when things cannot be kept under control.

As such, we really don't know how to help the people of Haiti.

In the U.S., Hurricane lke also brought much devastation to parts of the country.

Fortunately, people in the U.S. had learned their lesson from Hurricane Katrina,

So everyone no knows to be scared and concerned this time.

So, we mustn't say that we are not afraid.

Instead, we should be scared and concerned and evacuate to a safer place.

So, this time, with one hurricane striking after another everyone was prepared and did That is why there were less casualties this time.

Since Sept. 9, Tzu Chi volunteers in Dallas, Texas have begun helping at the invitation of the local government.

They helped prepare the local convention center

While bringing aid to the evacuees, they also had to look after their own safety.

It was truly very hard work. See, when they helped set up the camp cots, they were very mindful in leaving enough space between beds so that it wouldn't be too crowded.

Afterwards, they even tried them out to see if they were comfortable.

Besides setting up a comfortable place for them to stay our volunteers also provided care and emotional support.

They were truly mindful in everything they did showing their utmost respect and love to the evacuees.

In the U.S. right now, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and Tzu Chi are the three main organizations providing relief during times of disaster.

Whenever disasters occur; these three organizations will team up.

Our volunteers would help the Red Cross in setting up camp cots, to make conditions comfortable for evacuees in evacuation centers.

The Salvation Army is responsible for providing food, and like the Red Cross, they'd enlist Tzu Chi's help with food preparations.

Truly, we do this so that those taking refuge in temporary shelters can be at ease both physically and mentally.

I'm truly very grateful.

This time, David D'or happened to give a concert in Dallas just before Ike made landfall.

Since knowing about Tzu Chi, he made a vow to me that he'd sing all over the world to raise funds for Tzu Chi.

So, this time, he held seven concerts across the U.S. and donated the proceeds from the concerts to Tzu Chi's international disaster relief fund.

I'm truly very grateful.

Though he is of a different ethnicity and religious belief,

he's also my disciple.

That's why he wants to sing for Tzu Chi and contributes to our international disaster relief effort.

Our Tzu Chi volunteers in Texas have truly been very busy lately.

They have to prepare for the concert and at the same time care for the hurricane evacuees.

They've truly been very busy these last few days.

There are truly many things to be grateful for.

In this world, each of us should truly abide by our duty.

We should dedicate ourselves to a good cause and not waste money frivolously.

In fact, I saw a news report on Da Ai TV about hunger and famine.

The number of people living in hunger is steadily increasing.

They truly endure unspeakable suffering.

So, we should be pious and take care in our actions.

We must all nurture love and compassion look after our minds carefully and cultivate blessings through serving others.
