What we see in the footage is in South Africa.

Although South Africa is more well-to-do than many other countries in Africa, there are still many living in poverty there.

In September this year when Tzu Chi volunteers in South Africa came back to the Jing Si Abode, I shared with them that I am very worried about a global food shortage.

Given the erratic climate conditions we now have. I am very concerned that increasingly, there will be more food shortage around the world.

I hope the agricultural knowledge and technology that we have in Taiwan.

(can benefit other countries)

At the time, our volunteers from South Africa, Mr. Shi and Mr. Pan, also shared with me that our Zulu volunteer bodhisattvas have been regularly providing hot meals to over 3,000 orphans. (whose parents had died of AIDS)

These volunteers in several parts of South Africa grow their own vegetables to provide for these orphans.

This gave me even greater confidence.

(that my suggestion could work)

So, I told them that it was not as effective for the volunteers to work on their own plot of land separately.

It would be better if they could find a large piece of land where everyone could gather together with our volunteers from Taiwan sharing with them the agricultural know-how so that everyone could work the land together.

(to produce more crops and vegetables)

That why, besides providing for those in need, they'd also be able to provide for themselves.

In November of this year, when our volunteers worldwide returned o Taiwan to be certified as Tzu Chi members four of our Zulu volunteers were certified.

They were truly endearing.

Every one of these Zulu Tzu Chi volunteers is a seed--- and a very good quality seed, too.

That is because their hearts are full of love.

Because of the love in their hearts,

(they will naturally be a good quality seed)

When we share the Dharma with them and they're able to use it in their daily life, they can cultivate their inner field as well as the inner field of others.

So, they are each a seed. When they return to their country, they can pass on the good things they've learned so that more people can join them.

(to help more people in need)

Through the project of farming because of the love in their hearts, they can use the Dharma to inspire and guide the local people to cultivate the land.

Through this, the people can become spiritually rich.

After taking in the Dharma, people will be inspired and their hearts opened so they'll be spiritually rich.

(Then, with love in their hearts,)they can work the land and inspire more people to join them in this effort.

If they can do this, they can help with the food shortage problem.

After they were certified in Hualien, starting November 25, they visited.

(several places to learn more about our missions,)including a trip to our recycling station.

They then went to our Great Love Farm in Dalin to learn more farming skills.

On November 28, they left Taiwan and went back to South Africa.

The day after they went back, they witnessed life's impermanence---

(strong winds created a disaster)

Such a disaster is a rare occurrence in S. Africa.

It happened on November 29.

Strong winds ripped through KwaMakhutha (30 km south of Durban) causing trees to fall on hoses, destroying them.

These were casualties and over 100 houses collapsed.

Our Zulu volunteers mobilized immediately.

Gladys immediately gathered volunteers together to survey the situation.

This was the first time they did this on their own

They mobilized immediately and went to survey the disaster situation.

Some of the disaster victims they met had truly heartbreaking stories.

There was a man in his forties whose wife and daughter were killed leaving him and their son behind.

There is also a grandma. who is 57 years old.

Her daughter died when the house collapsed and now she has to raise her two grandchildren.

On top of that, their home was destroyed.

Seeing the grandma's situation, her neighbors immediately made arrangements for them so that the grandma and her grandchildren had a place to stay temporarily.

When Gladys and the other volunteers arrived the grandma went over to Gladys and cried in her arms releasing her grief and sorrow.

See, our Zulu volunteers are exactly like Tzu Chi volunteers elsewhere comforted p

Like all Tzu Chi volunteers, they hugged and comforted people, and continue to provide care.

(After surveying the disaster situation,) they contacted other local Taiwanese Tzu Chi volunteers and briefed them on what they had seen and what supplies the people myay need.

The local Taiwanese Tzu Chi volunteers joined them in the planning.

Meanwhile, the Zulu volunteers began cooking meals for the disaster victims.

Even now, they are still providing two hot meals a day for the disaster victims.

What moved me very much to see was that since I 've been telling our volunteers to encourage the local people to use spoons or even teach them how to use chopsticks.

(as that's more sanitary than eating with hands)

They took this opportunity of providing hot meals to encourage the locals to use a spoon.

It was very heartwarming to see.

I truly feel that to spread the seed of love around the world.

We must teach people to fist cultivate their inner field.

(and then to care for the land they live on)

To cultivate our inner field, we have to nurture the seed of love in our heart.

When we have an abundance of love in us, we'll have many seeds of love hat

(we can pass on to others)

(to teach others about giving love)

When everyone comes together with hearts of love, they will interact with one another with harmony.

Harmony is the atmosphere that is created by love.

When everyone is harmonious, sincerely pious, and loves one another, together they'll have the strength to furthermore cultivate the land.

As long as there's a piece of land in Africa, that is fertile and able to grow crops it can provide food to the people and allow the people living there to thrive.

We can first start this in South Africa.

(When the farm is thriving,)when neighboring countries are in need such as Zimbabwe, they'll have the means to help.

I'm truly worried about the conditions in Zimbabwe.

But ultimately, in order to assist Zimbabwe's people on a more long-term basis.

We'd need to rely on manpower and supplies.

(from nearby, in South Africa)

Everyone, let us live more frugally.

When we see other people living in poverty (it should remind us to sow blessings)

(by giving love to others)

So, let us diligently cultivate ourselves and walk forward on the spiritual path with the spirit of diligence, frugality and the ability to endure hardship.
