人間菩提--精勤不懈度苦難

Tzu Chi is now in its 43rd year.

Over the past 40 plus years, (al of us have been)

(doing spiritual cultivation)

(as we walk the Bodhisattva Path in this world)

We started from nothing and I has been an arduous journey.

It originated with our Jing Si principles.

(which center around a non-worldly mindset)

(that transcends worldly attachments)

It means purifying our mind.

(As I often say, we must purify people's minds and work to recruit more living bodhisattvas.

Purifying the mind means eliminating greed hatred, delusion, arrogance and doubt from our mind.

We should try to eliminate these from our everyday habits.

To do that, we must quiet down and calm our mind.

(so that our mind can remain in a state)

(of purity, clarity and tranquility)

Our frame of mind, our thinking)

Our inner state in total must reside in tranquility and stillness.

(Then, our mind will be) clear and pure without any impurities.

With that, (our mind will be very keen and focused) as our mind is not tainted.

(That is the state I mean by "Jing Si")

(We must keep) a mind of utter purity with great selfless vows. It means that since we already know what the right path is to walk upon in this world.

(we must abide by it unwaveringly)

The Buddha has continually told us that when people give rise to greed at a moment of weakness are drawn in by worldly temptations they'd easily.

(fall into the trap of their desires)without being able to control themselves.

and thereby develop some bad habits.

(So, as we have found the right path in life.)

We must work to eliminate these bad habits we have.

Since we've vowed to walk the path, we must abide by it unwaveringly and steadfastly.

Tzu Chi members often speak of "convictions" and "missions"

Serving as a volunteer is our conviction---

Harboring a heart of sincerity, integrity, trust, and honesty we dedicate ourselves to serving as a volunteer of our own accord.

No one requests us to do that and we shouldn't rely on others to guide us all the time.

We must abide by our selfless vows (to uphold life's principles)

With that, our path will become very broad.

That's what's said in the Buddhist sutras.

So, we must uphold our vows steadfastly for countless eons of time of come.

The path we have chosen to walk on is a right one.

So, since it's a right path and we have made vows to walk upon it.

(we must adhere to it wholeheartedly and) move forward on the path with a steadfast and diligent spirit.

That is what it means to diligently.

(cultivate ourselves with the Jing Si principles)

As for our Tzu Chi path, (it's to walk the Bodhisattva Path in this world)

Over the past 40 plus years, Tzu Chi volunteers have upheld a correct view and understanding so our thoughts are pure and in action. We live that out by

(walking the Bodhisattva Path in this world)

That's what it means to keep a heart of utter purity with great selfless vows and abide by our vows for endless time to come.

(and through benefiting people in society)

(we will gain innumerable insights into the Truth)

Everyone we help in society has a very touching story.

(that reveals truths to us)

So, everyone is a living sutra for us to read and learn from

That's why (we will gain innumerable insights into the Truth)

With a heart of pious sincerity (when we bear the Buddha's teachings in mind)

(and put them into practice)

(by walking into the community to serve others)

(with the Dharma we have learned)we'll be able to see the innumerable truths that everyone is revealing to us.

So, we must be very mindful in our interactions with people.

(That's what the Tzu Chi path is about)

When we speak of reading sutras, it's not only about reading Buddhist scriptures in print but also about learning from the life experiences of people we serve in society as every one of them is also a living sutra.

Everyone, we must be very mindful.

The Tzu Chi path is the Bodhisattva Path in this world.

We must go into the world and understand the suffering of the world.

In the last 43 years we've provided love and care to people in close to 70 countries.

Now, we're also planning a relief mission in Haiti.

Yesterday afternoon, I received the mud cookies that or volunteers sent to me.

Those are what the poor in Haiti survive on

On November 24, seven of our volunteers from the U.S. went to assess the living condition of the people in Haiti.

The country is so poor that the staple diet of the poor is mud cookies.

Actually, though this country has farmland because of political instability people do not have peace of mind.

We often speak of favorable climate and land conditions but harmony among people is the most important.

What Haiti lacks is good climate conditions because being located in the Caribbean it has been subject to many hurricanes in the last few years.

When one disaster follows another, it shows that the weather hasn't been favorable.

But the most important factor is the strife in society. Haiti's poverty is a consequence of the factors of unfavorable climate conditions and disharmony between people.

So, how do they survive on mud cookies as a staple diet?

Yesterday, I received the mud cookies they sent.

The mud cookies (were bought in Haiti) and cost about 3 US cents each and they sent me five pieces.

Several people tried them yesterday

It's salty.

It's quite slippery.

It tastes like peanuts.

This morning, a group of Tzu Chi volunteers from Malaysia came to see me.

One of them slipped away after trying it.

Where did he slip away to?

I am sure you can guess without my telling you.

All in all, people in Taiwan can make choices and people in Malaysia can make choices too but people in Haiti have no choices.

There is also no question about the need for us to go to their aid.

Meanwhile, Brzail is continuously being lashed by torrential rain, causing severe mudslides. See how fragile the land is.

Everyone, we must also go help the people of Brazil who have fallen victim to the worst flooding they've seen in a century.

Seeing the plight of Haiti and Brazil we must have greater awareness and understanding.

The predicament of Haiti actually stems from human conflict and political instability leading to unfavorable weather and poverty.

So, only when people live in harmony with one another will there be favorable weather.

As I often share with you, the root cause of all disasters lies in the human mind.

So, we truly have to tame our mind give rise to good thoughts, and make good vows, and work to fulfill them every day.

We should aspire to help others rather than just seek to indulge ourselves in material comforts with no regard to those in suffering.

Soon, every citizen in Taiwan

(is going to be issued shopping vouchers)

If every one of you could donate a portion of that money, just imagine by pooling together everyone's donation, we could buy not only mud cookies but even cornmeal for people in Haiti.

That way, do you know how many people we could help?

So, every one of us in Taiwan should truly cherish our blessings and be grateful for having been able to live each day in peace and safety all these years.

Look at people all over the world---some have been devastated by the worst natural disasters of the century.

Seeing their suffering, we truly should be even more aware and quickly make vows to

Walk steadfastly on the Bodhisattva Path.
