NT$0.50 per catty (0.5kg)

That's how the money was gradually accumulated.

Only when we have ideals will we work towards them

If you don't recycle these things, they'll just be incinerated.

If you recycle them, they can be reused and the money from selling them can support Da Ai TV.

(If we don't recycle them) there'd be rubbish everywhere.

If we recycle them, there'll be less garbage.

I feel that while the economy is very bad right now.

I have a lot and don't lack anything.

(because I can use the recyclables)

(The recyclables provide a lot)

It's such a ity that people throw things away

I don't see them as garbage so I'll pick them up to use.

Although every day, we see many disasters occurring and many people in suffering when we truly quiet down our mind and reflect carefully.

Truly, we should be grateful.

We should be grateful to Mother Earth for sustaining us and for enduring the consequences of man's actions that have caused much damage to it.

We truly should cherish Mother Earth with loving care.

By no means should we bring her any more harm.

Instead, we should reach our to care for Mother Earth by protecting the environment.

Every time I see our recycling volunteers, I'm filled with respect for them from the bottom of my heart.

This is especially as many of them are elderly.

In the footage we saw our recycling point in a village of Qijn in Kaohsuing.

It was under a big banyan tree that recycling began in this village.

Mr. Qiu was the one to start it off.

Do you still remember Mr. Qiu?

(When he was young,) (he was ill-treated by his adoptive parents) who were always calling him trash.

As a result, he became very resentful and for a very long time.

He vented his anger on his wife and children.

He would hit his wife and children.

One time when he was sitting in the park, he started to reflect upon himself and wonder why his son.

(was rejected when he proposed)

(marriage to his long-time girlfriend)

When the girl's family heard whose son their daughter was to marry, they refused.

It was only then that he started to contemplate what he was actually doing wrong.

So, one day, while sitting in the park thinking and drinking alcohol, he saw a group of Tzu Chi volunteers in the park collecting recyclables and cleaning the surroundings.

Out of curiosity, he asked what they were doing. When our volunteers he asked what they were doing.

When our volunteers told him they were collecting recyclables,

(he thought the work was very meaningful)

So he began having contact with Tzu Chi volunteers and started to volunteer by doing recycling.

Because of the work he was doing, he influenced this Grandpa Zhuang who wondered why Mr. Qiu who was very infamous in their village would start collecting recyclables.

This caught Grandpa Zhuang's attention.

After Mr. Qiu became aware of his wrongdoings, he repented his past actions and reformed.

So, he was able to inspire and touch others.

Grandpa Zhuang was very touched to see his transformation and began joining him in collecting recyclables.

After Mr. Qiu passed away, Grandpa Zhuang dedicated himself even more to the recycling work.

He even got his friend from primary school to join him in doing recycling.

This friend of his is Grandpa Ye.

He was a fisherman. Since he was getting on in his age and working out at sea is very tiring work and he could not get much fish anyway.

He decided to sell his fishing boat and retire.

Learning that, Grandpa Zhuang invited him to do recycling with him.

So, the two of them began doing recycling under a big banyan tree.

They continued until 2006 when Grandpa Zhuang's health began to deteriorate and he was diagnosed with cancer.

Grandpa Ye would go visit and chat with him.

They would often chat with each other and argue with each other yet remaining good friends.

While doing recycling one would say things should be done this way while the other would insist on a different way.

They often had these kinds of arguments but they'd quickly make up with each other again.

There was nothing they wouldn't say to each other as they were a great match together.

So, while Grandpa Zhuang lay on his sickbed, he said to Grandpa Ye:

"The only thing that worries me now"

"is what will happen to the recycling work"

"You're the only one who can keep it going"

So, he passed on the responsibility of the recycling work to Grandpa Ye.

Shaking his head, he said to me.

"I'm counting on you to"

"carry on the work for me"

"If you don't carry on the work"

"this recycling point will go"

Then tears started rolling down his face.

I said, "Come now, tears are very precious"

"so stop crying"

"I'll do all I can"

Because of their close friendship, Grandpa Ye shouldered such a responsibility.

However, Grandpa Ye has a mother in her nineties and he feels he must look after her himself and shouldn't ask others to do it in his stead.

So, every morning, he wakes up at around 4 a.m.

(to do recycling)as a way to keep his word to Grandpa Zhuang by doing what Grandpa Zhuang asked him to do.

So, even now, he still wakes up at 4 every morning.

He'd first go along the streets to collect recyclables making at least five trips a day.

He'd make several trips up and down the streets to collect recyclables until 6 or 7 a.m.

He would then go home to attend to his mother preparing breakfast for her and cleaning her body, etc.

The way he treats his mother with such loving care is truly very touching to see.

See how this 63-year-old-man looks after his 92-year-old mother.

Even now he still looks after her very mindfully.

That's why she is always very clean and tidy.

Indeed, doing good and being filial are things that cannot wait.

When asked why he does what he does, he said, "That's what Master teaches us"

"Doing good and being filial cannot be put off"

"It's only what I should be doing"

His kids see the way he cares for their grandma and in their hearts, he is their role model.

He never asks others to attend to his mother on his behalf.

He does everything himself.

He truly makes me feel that

(people of that generation) like him are truly endearing.

People in this fishing village truly have very simple and pure hearts.

They are capable of enduring hardship and dedicate themselves to caring for the land.

They're the people that I love most.

I'm truly very grateful to them

So, we must cherish the land, respect and love Mother Nature and create good collective karma for our world.

Indeed, our recycling stations are truly their cultivation grounds for living bodhisattvas.

Though the recyclables we collect may look dirty as long as we look at them with a heart of purity (we will) cherish them as valuable resources.

Such is the "mind of equality" in Buddhism.

We must work together to create good collective karma cherish our blessings and sow more blessings.

This is our mission.

I am truly very grateful (for everyone's efforts)

Recycling is a modern Dharma path in today's world.

All in all, we must uphold our Jing Si principles and walk the Tzu Chi path diligently by going into the world to work for the greater good by protecting the earth.
