人間菩提--用心眼看世界

Where does suffering lie in life?

Explore this by going into the suffering

Only by mindfully reflecting upon how sensations cause suffering

Can we understand the truth of suffering

When I was 48, my eyesight began deteriorating, and I'd come lie down here after meals.

I was like this for 2 years.

In our journey in life, we sometimes encounter great obstacles.

So, we must seize the opportunity while we can to carefully observe everything around us (to learn life's truths)

When we speak, we should say what we mean.

In taking action, we must do what is right.

To do that, we must keep our hearts bright & clear at all times and not let a single deluded thought cloud our heart and mind.

The main reason the Buddha came to this world was to lead us to realization of the Truth.

He wanted to awaken the Buddha-nature inherent in all living beings so that our inner eye could be opened and see the suffering empty nature, and impermanence of life.

The man we saw in the footage just now is Mr. Wang Zhong-chi

Though life was hard when he was growing up, he managed to start up his own business.

But when he was not yet 30, he developed diabetes, and as a result of that, he developed retinopathy and his eyesight got worse and worse.

(In the same year that he lost his eyesight) he had to close his business because a company reneged on its loans to him.

At the time, he developed depression and kept wanting to take his own life.

In fact, at the time, he had already know about Tzu Chi for nearly 20 years.

He was a donating member and donated regularly.

(but didn't take part in Tzu Chi's work)

However, during this time, his health, career, and emotional state had all undergone great changes.

So, he gradually became more and more ill-tempered always verbally abusing his family.

With Tzu Chi commissioners trying to give guidance, his wife was gradually able to see past things and wanted to dedicate herself to Tzu Chi

However, her husband could not accept this.

My life was already involved with Tzu Chi at the time

But I tried to stop her.

I said, "I need more help than anyone"

"(Why are you going off to help others?)"

His wife wanted to dedicate more time to Tzu Chi but he would find ways to stop her.

So, his wife kept caring for him trying to think of ways for him to truly come to accept Tzu Chi. (and take part in Tzu Chi)

In 2006, he heard a speech given by the mouth-painter Xie Kun-shan which deeply affected him as he saw how Mr. Xie had faced worse adversities earlier in life than he had because Mr. Xie was struck by.

His lost both his arms and his right leg.

Despite it all, he is still able to be so happy and is a very accomplished artist.

He has even traveled worldwide under the invitation of Tzu Chi volunteers to give inspirational talks in many countries about his own life experiences.

Mr. Xie's story touched him.

He wondered to himself:

"Isn't he also suffering as well?"

Pondering on the issue of suffering, he came to realize (what life was really about)

So, although his eyesight is slowly deteriorating, his inner eye is seeing more clearly every day.

After getting to know Tzu Chi, I stopped blaming my misfortunes on everyone.

So, I ought to thank her.

She brought me to Tzu Chi and led me along the way.

And as I walked along, my path in life which started off narrow became broader and broader.

So, he has now become very radiant and cheerful.

In order to become a masseur, he commuted from Tainan to Kaohsiung to learn this specialized skill.

In class, he came to know a Mr.Li.

Mr.Li used to be a police officer who had everything going for him.

But a car accident left him blind in both eyes.

He had endured much hardship as his wife had left him and he had to take his son with him to move back home with his parents.

He also thought he could learn the skill to become a masseur.

That's where they met each other.

A-    tze. Long time no see.

Yes, long time no see.

I've finished making the flag for you.

When I was making it, I didn't write "vision impaired"

I wrote "massages by busy people"

("Busy" and "blind" are homonyms in Chinese)

Alright

Do you get it?

Can you see me?

Have we ever seen each other before?

Us two?

Yes

Not up till now

We won't see each other in the future either.

Yes

Because we can't see

No, we can't

We were classmates for a year.

Brother Zhong-chi helped me through all my hard times

He'd guide and counsel me on the train after calss.

He served as my eyes for a year.

His wit and humor on the train brought me a lot of laughter and made me forget the helplessness of being shrouded in darkness.

(So, both of them have gone through much hardship)

Such is the suffering, empty nature, and impermanence of life.

Mr. Huang has come to realize this and understands that his suffering is a result of the spiritual ignorance and delusion that he has accumulated over time.

So now, he has opened up his heart and mind.

He has gained insight into life's truths, and moreover, has truly entered the Bodhisattva Path.

Walking the path, he now realizes that this path actually brings him much joy every day as he is able to serve others every day and share the Dharma with others every day.

Indeed, his impaired physical condition conveys to others life's truths as his condition shows people the suffering, empty nature& impermanence of life.

His body is a testimony to these principles.

He also diligently studies the 37 Principles of Enlightenment.

He recited and memorized the verse adaptations and then contemplated the truths contained within.

So, he was able to realize these truths and can in turn guide others.

Look at his change.

So, with willpower, we can overcome all difficulties.

Everyone, we must take in the Buddha's teachings and put them into practice.

The Buddha's teachings can cleanse our mind of delusion and ignorance so that we will be able to return to our pure true nature, the Buddha-nature.

It's truly not difficult to achieve.

Looking at the world around us, we see there is truly much suffering.

Take Haiti for example I'm truly very worried about the people in Haiti.

See, more and more people in Haiti are starving.

Everyone, in this world when disasters strike, be they man-made or natural or when both happen together, people not only suffer spiritually but also have to endure the pain of hunger.

The suffering is beyond what words can describe.

All around the world, there are disasters occurring every day.

At the beginning of December, Venice. (suffered he worst flooding in 22 years)

People there truly have endured much suffering

Indeed, there are many disasters occurring throughout the world.

Such is the suffering, empty nature & impermanence of life.

Our world is now in decay and that's because of the negative karma that living beings have collectively built up.

Everyone, as I share with you almost every day people's greed and extravagant lifestyle.

(are at the roots of these disasters we see)

So, we truly have to discipline ourselves.

(and mindfully contemplate, realize, and practice) what the Buddha teaches us about life's truths.
