The thought of a typhoon coming brings up fear.

Indeed, natural disasters are very powerful.

We often hear people say that man can overpower Nature.

Can we really?

Definitely not.

That is why we must hold Nature in reverence and live in peaceful coexistence & harmony with Nature.

We must love and care for it in our daily lives.

In doing so, we must also love and cherish ourselves.

To love and cherish ourselves we must first love others.

Such is Great Love.

When we have Great Love, such love will also encompass ourselves.

But if we only care about ourselves and do not love others around us, we will end up losing much more.

When disasters strike, see how so many people (put their own families aside)

(to care for those in greater need first)

Nevertheless, there are still people

(who took no heed of weather reports) and said:

"That's what weather reports usually say, but"

"doesn't everything turn out alright in the end?"

So, they would continue with their outing plans while ignoring the weather bureau's warnings and still going to the tourist spots as planned.

(where the natural landscape has been destroyed) due to man's overdeveloping it.

So, as time passes by, this land we live on becomes wounded all over and can no longer bear with such abuse.

That is why mountains collapse and mudslides occur leaving scenes of devastation everywhere.

All that happened in the twinkling of an eye.

Fortunately, there is a group of police officers safeguarding the land and the people with love.

They keep an eye on the conditions of mountains and pay close attention to weather reports in times of peace.

So, upon hearing about Typhoon Sinlaku's approach this group of police officers when everywhere to warm people about it and kept urging everyone to evacuate to safer areas.

In the morning of September 15, we helped evacuate nearly 400 people to Jingguang Villa and Guiyuantang Hotel higher up.

And by noon that day, as everyone knows, two hotels collapsed after the mudslides came down.

Over 50 people's lives were saved after my co-worker earnestly urged them to evacuate.

If it weren't for these police officers who possess the heart of bodhisattvas working earnestly to persuade people to evacuate, who knows how many more lives would have been lost and how many more families would be shattered because of the mudslides this time.

Though we see such serious damage done his time, should people rebuild everything in that area?

That's something people must think carefully about.

We must use wisdom and no longer harm the land for the sake of making profits.

Every time a disaster happens,

(we should learn the lesson it brings)

Among this group of police officers, several of them are members of our assn. of police officers and their families Chief Officer Guo only transferred to Renal of Nantou County eleven months ago and he has influenced many of his colleagues to become Tzu Chi's donating members.

Several of them have also joined our people officers' association.

So, when the landslides occurred (in Lushan of Nantou County,)

They gave up their days off work to dedicate themselves to the rescue work.

Several police officers did so out of their own accord.

For that, I am truly very grateful.

Chief Officer Guo listens to my talks, so he also knows to feel others' suffering as his very own.

He could not bear to see the residents of this mountain area suffering from such devastation so he willingly dedicated himself to helping to relieve the suffering of the people.

He could not bear to stay outside of the disaster area

(while people there needed help)

What these officers have done is truly admirable)

Moreover, there is an officer whose home was also buried by the landslides

After arranging for his wife and children to stay with relatives, he dedicated himself to the rescue work.

For several days in a row, these officers did not leave the disaster area.

Indeed, how they safeguard the land and its people with love is truly very admirable.

They truly are the guardians of the people.

Actually, our chief didn't ask us to come to work but we came of our own accord.

They do their utmost to carry out their duties and stand by their posts.

Of course, we hope that while working to protect the land and its people, these police officers can be safe too.

We also see our Tzu Chi volunteers.

Although it is still hard to travel there, a group of Tzu Chi volunteers have already gone into the disaster area to care for the people there, giving them comfort and finding out what help they may need.

See, they truly are living bodhisattvas.

Every time I see such heartwarming scenes I feel a deep sense of gratitude that cannot be expressed with words.

At the same time, I'd like to cal upon everyone to first love and respect themselves as only then will they be safe and sound and the land be left in peace.

So, at all times, we must take good care of our minds.

That is called self-respect.

To truly have self-respect for ourselves, we must abide by rules and precepts n our daily living.

When every one of us knows to respect ourselves

(and does so every day)

(then everyone in society)

will have love and respect for one another.

and Mother Nature.

If everyone can do so,

(the spirit of Great Love can be manifested)

By no means should we wait until disasters strike to give rise to love.

We mst harbor love every day, and take each step with love in our heart.

As I often remind everyone---walk gently so as not to hurt the earth.

That is what I'd like to share with everyone.

We must take each step very carefully.

For every movement and every action we take every word we say, every thought we give rise to and the direction of our life that we follow, shouldn't we do so with love and respect for everyone and everything around us?

Only when we have such love and respect are we truly loving and respecting Mother Nature and have true Great Love that is all-encompassing.

So, everyone, please be sincerely pious and on the alert

(There is another typhoon approaching)

Seeing its projected route, I'm very worried as it is moving toward the direction of Taiwan and very likely to affect us eventually.

I am truly very worried and concerned.

So, everyone, please stay on the alert.

There're things that worry and concern me everyday.

So, everyone, please always give of ourselves with love.

The Transformation of a Gambler每日播出內容 FLV300K WMV300K 56K

She usually gambled under that starfruit tree.

I gambled at the grocer's from 11p.m. till dawn when I had to go home and prepare breakfast.

I lost over US$400. When I went home, I parked my scooter outside.

(for fear of waking my family)

My son bought a cell phone for me.

I kept it turned off especially when I was gambling.

I even pawned my cell phone for money.

I went to temples to seek the winning numbers.

I drew lots to see the numbers on them.

I even went to a child prophet in Taichung and bought lots there.

I even used numbers from my dreams.

I lost around US$30,000.

This grandma we see in the footage, Lin Chen, had gambled for 17 years and was very caught up in it.

She not only gambled, but also played the lottery, and would seek revelations of the winning numbers.

She even went to a graveyard in the middle of the night seeking revelations of the winning numbers.

One time, in the process of doing this, she got chased by a dog.

But that didn't stop her.

That was how deep she was into it.

She had already lost herself in it

She was totally consumed by her craving for money that she couldn't stop.

It was truly unbelievable.

When she was caught up in the midst of it, I believe she herself must have beenvery troubled by what she was doing.

Such are people's deluded ways.

Of course, there's always a story behind how each lost his way.

It actually began on the day her youngest son got married when the matchmaker asked her to buy a lottery ticket.

She was originally a very dutiful housewife and a good mother to her children.

But by giving in to a moment's temptation, she had a hard time turning back.

One time, her daughter-in-law saw Tzu Chi's disaster relief work on TV and called up our Tzu Chi office in Taichung to find out more about Tzu Chi.

She said that she wanted do donate money and asked someone to go to her house to collect her donation.

One day, Grandma Lin Chen happened to have lost some money gambling and had around US$15 left on her.

When she arrived home and saw our Tzu Chi volunteer collecting the donation from her daughter-in-law, she thought, "I'd better donate some money,"

"then maybe I would have a better luck"

"with gambling or get lucky numbers"

"for the lottery"

So, she quickly donated the US$15 she had left.

One month later, this Tzu Chi volunteer went to her house again.

But Grandma Lin Chen felt differently.

(about donating money) this time.

She told our volunteer, "Come on,"

"I am not very well-off"

"Can you stop trying to cheat me out of money?"

That was her reaction when she saw our volunteer again.

Our volunteer then showed her the Tzu Chi Monthly he brought with him.

(It happened to report on the aid work)

That was being done in South Africa that year.

In the photos, she saw children in great suffering.

Some were so starved that they had very skinny necks and big bellies.

Her heart truly went out to them.

Those starving children reminded her of her four little grandchildren that her daughter had left behind after dying in a car crash.

Thinking of that, she began to cry.

She thought to herself how small these children were and how her grandchildren had such a sad lot as it was let alone these children who had nothing to eat.

She found it heartbreaking.

From that time on, her daughter-in-law began reading the Jing Si Aphorisms in Tzu Chi Monthly magazine out loud to her.

Listening to it, she found it had truth in it.

One time, when I was in Taichung giving a speech, I encouraged everyone to do recycling with the hands they were applauding with.

Hearing this she changed her way of thinking and began using the hands she gambled with to do recycling.

Although she had begun to do recycling she would still gamble once in a while.

To really change her gambling habit wasn't that easy.

But she did begin to change slowly and step by step.

It wasn't up until 2003 when she heard me giving a dharma talk in Taichung that she decided to quit gambling as she realized that life is very valuable and we mustn't waste it. But should seize the chance to do what is right before it's too late for us to give of ourselves.

So, that was when she truly gave up gambling to dedicate herself to Tzu Chi thus ending her 17-year gambling addiction.

After giving up her gambling habit, she made a vow to start training to become a commissioner.

At first, despite her saying that she was doing recycling, her family didn't believe that she had changed.

It wasn't until Tzu Chi volunteers came by with a recycling truck to pick up the recyclables she had collected that her children and grandchildren realized that she was doing this for Tzu Chi.

Then they supported her.

They even cleared out a space outside the house for her to set up a small recycling station where the recyclables can be kept and sorted before they are taken away.

Not only have they provided this space but everyone in her family has also been inspired by her to do recycling.

So, she quit gambling completely in 2003 but it wasn't until the end of 2007

that she became a certified commissioner.

See, over those five years, Tzu Chi volunteers guided and took her to go visit our care recipients.

At the same time she has continually been doing recycling with the hands that she used to gamble with and bringing comfort and care to the suffering.

She is able to follow everything we teach here in Tzu Chi.

She was 75 years old when she became certified.

People say life begins when you're 70.

She started fully dedicating herself to Tzu Chi only five years ago and became a commissioner at 75.

So, isn't it true that life begins at 70?

See, with her willingness to change her life, she is able to lead a bright and meaningful life.

Her family, friends, and neighbors now view her in a completely different light seeing her as a new person leading a bright and beautiful life.

See how she makes full use of every second and even rides around to collect recyclables by loading as much as she can onto her scooter.

See, she has transformed from a gambler to a living bodhisattva, and is now walking on a straight, broad, and spacious path.

In life, it's never too late to change.

Ever since she came to know about Tzu Chi, she has been volunteering on and off. However, through the work she did, seeds of goodness had been planted in the field of her mind.

Indeed, we shouldn't fear hard work.

Having done it, what we've done can inspire others.

Wholesome Programs Spreading the Dharma Far and Wide

For us in Taiwan, we must be grateful for being safe and sound as Typhoon Hagupit veered slightly to the west and only skirted Taiwan (but didn't make landfall)

For that, we must be grateful at all times.

We must also be grateful to all the people around us.

For example, Tzu Chi volunteers are always vigilant and on the alert as well as cautious and sincerely pious---

The day before yesterday, upon hearing about Typhoon Hagupits approach, our volunteers quickly began reminding everyone to take precautions against the typhoon,

and to be truly cautious and sincerely pious so that our sincere piety can reach all the guardian spirits in the heavens.

(By no means should we let down our guard)

So, I am truly grateful that Taiwan can be safe and sound this time.

However, at the same time, in India, we also see the worst floods in decades.

The monsoon rains have brought about severe flooding in India.

It is truly heartrending to see.

Spain has also been affected by flash floods.

Spain is a well developed country (in our world, there are)

(greatly differing lifestyles)

(and with the imbalance this creates,)

(our natural world also becomes imbalanced)

So, many disasters occur around the world affecting so many people.

That's why the Buddha wishes to spread the Dharma.

During the time of the Buddha, he expounded the Dharma in India for only 49 years. In such a short period, how far could the Dharma be spread given that India is so large?

Here is an example. One time, the Buddha traveled to a small city of 90,000 people.

Of the 90,000 people only a third of them had the opportunity to see the Buddha and hear his teachings.

That was 30,000 people.

Another 30,000 people did not get the chance to see the Buddha.

or directly hear him expound the Dharma.

They only indirectly heard others say:

"We heard the Buddha expound the Dharma"

"The Buddha taught us this and that"

So, they only heard Buddha's teachings indirectly.

The remaining 30,000 people were not even aware of the existence of the Buddha who had gained Enlightenment.

They weren't even aware that the Buddha had already arrived in their small city.

So, not only did they not see the Buddha but they didn't even hear of the Buddha.

Even in such a small city, it was already so difficult for all people there to see and hear the Buddha let alone all the people of India.

As India is so big, how far can the Buddha's teachings reach, especially back in those days when transportation was very inconvenient and messages were hard to pass on?

So, back then it was very hard to make the Buddha's teachings widespread.

Moreover, during the time of the Buddha, there were numerous religions in India over 90 of them. Given the many religions there with some of them being very powerful, it was very difficult to make the Buddha's teachings widespread.

That is why after the Buddha passed away, Buddhism soon became less and less widespread in India.

Rather, it was in China that Buddhism later flourished.

Thanks to several Dharma Masters in China who endured all kinds of hardship, went to India and brought Buddhist sutras back to China.

Today, we are able to have so many Buddhist sutras to read.

So, we're very blessed. Many sutras we have now were the result of the hard work of many Dharma Masters and lay practitioners who had translated the otherwise difficult-to-understand sutras into commonly used language.

Moreover, thanks to today's advanced technology,

Our Da Ai TV is able to spread such righteous teachings and principles to different parts of the world.

All it takes is only a few seconds---

As I am speaking here, (via satellite transmission,)

In only four seconds, people in may, many countries around the world.

Will be able to hear what I'm saying now.

Nowadays, computer technologies are very advanced as well.

In many countries around the world, as long as people download a software called IPTV web viewer, they'll be able to watch Da Ai TV programs online.

So, Da Ai TV programs truly serve to spread the values of humanity, correct faith, and Dharma.

It's like a stream that can cleanse the impurities of people's minds.

Take this gentleman in Malaysia for example.

He loved to go fishing and had many bad habits.

He used to tell me:

"You can tell me to quit any habit"

"but don't tell me to quit fishing"

After watching Da Ai Tv, he learned to repent.

It was only after watching Da Ai TV that he asid sorry to me for the first time.

(After watching Da Ai TV,) I completely changed my old ways.

I even quit my most beloved hobby, fishing.

I know I was wrong.

So, I need to gradually change my ways.

He's even quit the habit that's hardest for him to quit (fishing),

Because after watching Da Ai TV, he was able to take in what I said about the karmic law of cause and effect and how we should hold respect for all lives as the life of all living beings is very precious and so we shouldn't kill them.

Therefore, he quit his habit.

Think about it, now that he doesn't fish, the lives of the fish living in the water can be spared and (the fish can live in peace)

See how many lives are spared.

Even young children understand my teachings.

Hearing his teacher talk about eating vegetarian in kindergarten, this little boy became a vegetarian.

They watch Da Ai TVa at school. When he came home, he told me he no longer wanted to eat meat.

When he first told me that I ignored him. Then one day he said to me very angrily:

"Mommy, I've told you so many times."

"but you still give me meat to eat"

I was very surprised. I felt I mustn't continue what I was doing.

If I forced him to eat meat, I'd be creating bad karma.

So, in the end, I thought maybe we could give it a try.

So, we began to eat vegetarian.

Because of this child, his mother began to prepare vegetarian food for the family and also installed a set-top box through which they can watch Da Ai TV.

They also got their friends and relatives to install set-top boxes to watch Da Ai TV and listen to my teachings.

So, this time the CEO of Da Ai TV, Mr. Tang, also went to Singapore and Malaysia to attend the night galas for promoting Da Ai TV programs.

There were five gala nights in total.

(Many, many people came)

Everyone was very positive about Da Ai TV.

I hope that Da Ai TV can exert a positive influence and guide people towards correct principles.

Regarding correct principles, fishing, for example, is a deluded habit in that people are deluded in their enjoyment of it----

Though their hobby harms living creatures, they still insist on doing it.

This would be a deluded practice.

That gentleman was blinded by his own enjoyment in the activity.

Such are people's deluded ways.

But, Da Ai TV is able to correct people's mistaken viewpoints so that they know to

do the right things and become people with wisdom.

Doing what one shouldn't do is foolishness.

So, Da Ai TV is a stream of purity, serves as wholesome education, and spreads the Dharma around the world.

I'm truly very grateful to the mindfulness of all our staff in Da Ai TV.

I'm also very grateful to our volunteers who went abroad to share their stories with others.

All in all, this takes wisdom and perseverance.

For our bodhisattvas, if what they do can purify people's hearts and bring peace and harmony to society. They'd be very willing to make the effort.

So, they truly serve as a stream of purity, which, like a well-spring, continuously springs forth to purify people's mind.

The White Coat Ceremony---Vowing to be Humance Doctors

The White Coat Ceremony---Vowing to be Humance Doctors每日播出內容 FLV300K WMV300K 56K

I solemnly pledge that as a doctor, I will dedicate myself whole heartedly to serving humanity will practice medicine with conscience and dignity and consider the health of my patients my top priority.

I will not allow religion, nationality, race, politics, social status, and other factors to affect my duty toward my patients.

We often hear people speak of humane doctors and virtuous government officials.

With virtuous government officials, the national policies they make will enable the

country to prosper & the people to live in peace.

Likewise, if there are humane, conscientious doctors in society they'll safeguard people's lives with love and take good care of people's health.

Look at how bright and promising these interns are.

By taking an oath, they are preparing to take up the responsibility and mission of a doctor with courage and resolution.

This is the ninth "white coat ceremony" we have held for our medical students to date.

Yesterday, we also saw Qun-ming, who was from the second graduating class of our med. school.

He is now serving at our hospital in Dalin.

He came to Hualien two days ago for a training class to become a certified Tzu Cheng.

How fast children grow up.

Qun-ming was among the second graduating class at our medical school here in Hualien.

After medical school, he underwent his internship and served as a resident at our hospital in Hualien.

He's now an associate attending physician in Dalin.

He not only treats patients, but he also puts our spirit of humanity into practice.

This year, he is attending our training program to become a certified Tzu Cheng member.

At the closing ceremony for the training two day ago, he went onstage to share with everyone what I said to him at his "white coat ceremony".

I remember very clearly what Master said to us that year. Master said:

"As doctors, you must humble yourselves"

"so that you can be accepted"

"and loved by others"

"You must humbly learn from others"

"and treat your patients (as family)"

When Master put the stethoscope on us, Master asked us:

"Do you feel the weight being put on you?"

"What weight is that?"

"The weight of the responsibility"

"to care for the most precious thing on Earth---"

"life"

"You must shoulder the responsibility"

"of caring for people's lives"

He said that at the time, he was still very young and was thinking.

"How do I shoulder this responsibility?"

Only after becoming a doctor did he realize how heavy the responsibility of caring for lives is.

Indeed, isn't that the inherent calling of conscientious doctors?

Qun-ming is truly a role model for this group of medical students.

Such guidance from previous graduating classes is truly very important as they serve as good examples to follow.

I hope that such an exemplary model can be passed on from one class to the next.

At the "White coat ceremony" yesterday, a student honestly shared that although

They had to pay for the stethoscope themselves, my putting it on for them mean a responsibility is placed on him.

Later when I spoke to them, I told them that a stethoscope may have cost around US$60, but that's a tool they themselves will be using.

Then I shared with them that the school they are attending was made possible by the giving of all Tzu Chi members.

I went on to ask them how much they have to pay for a meal at the cafeteria.

They said NT$25 (US$0.75)

An all-you-can-eat meal for NT$25 (US$0.75)

And the dormitory they live in----

See how comfortable it is.

If they rent a place outside of campus, would it be as comfortable and cheap as our dormitory?

Our dormitory is safe, bright, and beautiful.

In fact, here in Tzu Chi's medical school we've put all our hearts in to educating and nurturing our students.

All we hope is that they may serve patients with genuine sincerity and relieve the suffering of those who are sick.

All that Tzu Chi volunteers have selflessly done for them, is only for this.

Some students told me that when they learned that their Tzu Chi Moms and dads were coming to see them to avoid meeting them.

I told them that they truly didn't know to appreciate what they had.

They should know that these Tzu Chi moms and dads are the ones who helped me build schools and hospitals.

They pay for their own travel expenses to come to Hualien to care for our students like their children.

Not all of them are well-off, but they live frugally to save up the money to come here and care for our students.

Sometimes when something happens to our students, because their own parents live farther away our Tzu Chi moms and dads will come and care for them even before their own parents arrive.

Why don't our students know to cherish them?

So, I told them that being so well cared for they should truly cherish and appreciate it.

But the young people we saw yesterday had a genuine and innocent heart.

If you teach them and tell them all we've done for them.

They can understand

I didn't do this to seek credit,

But to let them know that it was through the selfless giving of many that they are able to enjoy what they have today.

I want to thank Master for having created this world of Tzu Chi so that we can meet each other here.

I also want to thank our teachers and the monastics at the Abode for doing so much for us and being here with us these two days.

I must also thank all the parents who love their children so much and came all the way to be here to attend their child's white coat ceremony.

And thank you, every one of my classmates, for your support and encouragement throughout these years.

Lastly, I'd like to thank my father. He rode a bike from Zhanghua to Hualien to be here.

So, I'd like to take this opportunity to say to my father:

"Thank you for doing this for me, Dad"

It took him three days to ride from Zhanghua to Hualien.

Her father isn't in very good health.

So, why did he do that?

He wanted to encourage his daughter by way of action.

In fact, this family isn't very rich.

Though her father couldn't provide all the best material things to her, he did this to show his love her.

See what a loving relationship they have.

It's truly very moving.

So, seeing this group of genuine students

(who are about to become interns,)

And then seeing the dedication of our staff who educated our students with such mindfulness and seeing parents such as that father who had such earnest hopes for his daughter and expressed it with such a show of willpower.

These were all very moving.

In this big group of Tzu Chi, we have very moving stories to share every day.

So, every day, I'm very grateful.

As well as being grateful, we should also heighten our vigilance at all times.

We saw that Typhoon Hagupit has now been upgraded to a category 2 typhoon.

Seeing the mass of clouds, it's truly hard to tell whether the typhoon.

(will veer toward Taiwan)

Truly, we should remain on the alert and continue to uphold the vegetarian fast with a sincere and pious heart.

We also need to pray with sincere piety and pray that this typhoon will weaken so that it can pass by gently and then dissipate.

Every day, we should remain on high alert.

Wherever we may be, we should make thorough preparations.

We see that in Taichung County yesterday a prayer ceremony was held to commemorate the 921 Earthquake which took place 9 years ago.

So people can remember this disaster and not let this day fade from their minds because we must awaken to the lessons that alarming disasters bring and always keep these disasters and the lessons we learn in mind.

So, I hope everyone can constantly remain on the alert.

I'm also very grateful to David D'or for holding seven concerts across the U.S to raise money for our international relief fund.

Altogether, David D'or raised around US$2 million which is tens of millions of NT dollars.

I'm truly very grateful to everyone for giving of themselves with such love.

It is through the selfless giving of so many that those in suffering are able to receive comfort and support.

So, those who have the means should give more of themselves, so that they can help

more living beings in suffering.

All in all, in a country, besides needing virtuous government officials, we also need humane doctors.

Let's hope that the students we nurtured are seeds of goodness.

(and will become humane doctors)
