人間菩提--醫療注新力‧人文增慧命

"We're grateful to Master for creating Tzu Chi"

"so that we can learn about love and compassion and fro giving us the chance o serve others and meet everyone's expectations."

"But we will work very hard, be responsible."

"(and do our best)"

I heard that there are many Tzu Chings who have come to work for Tzu Ch.

It makes me very happy.

I also see many new young staff joining our staff at Tzu Chi Hospital in Taipei.

This also makes me very happy.

Everyone seems to be happy working at our hospital because though the work is demanding. Everyone works together united.

Because of this unity even though the work is hard

(I believe you all feel blessed)

More than twenty years ago, Tzu Chi started building our first hospital.

To raise funds for the construction, I went on tour around Taiwan almost every month.

The tour was not for sightseeing but to solicit funds from people all around Taiwan for building a hospital.

Thinking back to that time, we had no resources back then.

We had no money and no people to help us.

It was very hard.

(But all that hard work was worth it)

We worked hard and contributed everything we could.

Gradually, people started to share our ideals and kindhearted people donated money to us.

Some donated a large sum in one go while others worked for years in order to accumulate enough money to make a donation.

It was truly not easy for them.

Many people did this, and it was through the accumulation of these donations large & small that we were able to build our first hospital in Hualien.

So, pooling together every contribution we then built other hospitals and now have hospitals in Guanshan and Yuli to safeguard the lives of people in these remote parts of eastern Taiwan.

As for western Taiwan, there were more hospitals but there was still a shortage of medical resources in Dalin.

So, we built a hospital in Dalin.

It was our first Tzu Chi Hospital in western Taiwan.

Then we built a hospital in Taipei and a hospital in Taichung.

So, now we have six hospitals.

Of the six hospitals, the one in Hualien was the hardest to set up.

Back then, there weren't functioning railways connecting Hualien to Taipei.

 (Because of the inconvenient transportation,)

(few were willing to work in Hualien)

This made setting up a hospital in Hualien all the more difficult.

In the end, we overcame all these obstacles.

Even though we now have six hospitals they each face (staff shortages)

Because eastern Taiwan is more remote it is still difficult to get people to come work in eastern Taiwan much less in the rural towns of Guanshan and Yuli.

What about in the city? Is there such a problem?

(Those working in our hospital in Taipei tell me)

They also have this problem because there is more competition in the city.

I hope that our hospital does not compete for profit but rather for giving the best care to patients.

(Caring for patients is the goal of our hospital)

Nowadays, with the advancement of medical science and technology.

I hope that our medical personnel will also have greater love because while learning new techniques isn't hard.

If one only improves his skills without developing his capacity for love,

Then, one only operates the equipment without sincere feeling for the patient and that will harm the patient.

(I hope our hospital can provide loving care)

Tzu Chi people (helped build this hospital and) they not only donated money but are also giving their time and effort.

In our hospital in Taipei, there are always groups of Tzu Chi volunteers helping there.

They all have a very busy life but they still set aside time to volunteer at the hospital.

Their only wish is that our hospital can have good doctors and nurses who serve with a mission and who truly bring forth their full potential.

Despite the good facilities and equipment we have there has to be good peole to use these tools and who dedicate themselves to this.

Only then can patients be benefited.

So, I really hope that our hospital can be full of "ren wen." (By "ren wen" I mean)

(a medical culture of humanity that comes from)

(everyone living out the noble calling)

(of the medical profession)

(It is when we do can do that)

That we have a meaningful legacy to leave behind.

For instance, all of you have helped raise funds on the streets for the Myanmar cyclone disaster.

The cyclone hit Myanmar on May 2, now five or so months after the disaster, we've held the groundbreaking for the Great Love village that will have 744 houses.

You had all participated in the fundraising.

We also held a groundbreaking for the school next to the Great Love village.

On another day, we went to see them harvest rice.

We saw their abundant harvest.

We saw how sincerely grateful the farmers were.

They were truly grateful and they expressed their gratitude with a ceremony.

When our volunteers who were there described it to me, I was very moved.

I am telling you this now because I want to thank all of you.

(for your part in helping to make it happen)

(Some of you had also gone to give medical care)

Indeed, as a doctor, the missions of medicine and charity must go hand in hand.

The "ren wen" of medicine and charity is sincere love from the heart.

(Many of you also went to Sichuan, China)

I'm sure that when I bring up Sichuan, for those of you who have gone.

You will see in your mind's eye.

The children and the elderly you had met there.

Though you have returned to Taiwan your heart still remains with the people and that's because of love.

That kind of love (nurtures) our wisdom-life.

So, I am truly very grateful that you have brought together medicine & charity.

And lived out their "ren wen" (spirit of humanity)

If we have all the most advanced technology and equipment, we must make sure that

(our love keeps pace with it)

If the technology keeps advancing, but our love does not keep "advancing" as well that would be very dangerous.

As the technology improves, our love must e one step ahead of the development.

Love's potential is limitless.

We all have boundless potential because of love and because of this love our capabilities are boundless.

We must not let technology overtake our love.

The growth of our love must keep pace with the growth of technology.

Actually, the growth of our love should be even faster than that of technology.

In a word, we must use the technology with altruistic love.

Given our hospital' advanced facilities and equipments, I hope that every department in the hospital will be even better.

We can only truly achieve that if we have "ren wen" (the values of humanity) and if more members of the hospital staff. Understand Tzu Chi's spirit and ideals.

Only then can you really serve as a seed that can sprout and produce countless more seeds.

It's just like the rice seeds we gave in Myanmar.

One rice seed grew into a rice plant, and that rice plant produced many grains, many seeds. See, one seed can produce many seeds.

In a word, love can continually multiply.

Thank you, everyone, for your love.

971107人間菩提英文版Taking the Dharma to Heart to Eliminate Ignorance and Delusion

Taking the Dharma to Heart to Eliminate Ignorance and Delusion每日播出內容 | FLV 300K WMV 300K | 56K
人間菩提--聞法入心去無明

"Old people usually (have nothing to do )"

"I thank the Buddha and Master"

"for giving us the opportunity to do recycling"

"We must quickly do this, or it'd be too late"

"I'm very happy to be able to come and weed here"

"The more I volunteer here, the happier I become"

It has been 42 years since Tzu Chi was founded in Taiwan.

But, what is it about Tzu Chi's work. That gives people so much joy from doing it and

Make them dedicate themselves so willingly?

It's because of the blessings and joy, we gain from giving.

(Tzu Chi members) give unconditionally and on top of that even thank those they help.

(Isn't that a most noble spirit)

(that takes human nature to an even higher level?)

Everyone, think about it carefully.

Doesn't that bring us the greatest blessings in life?

We should strive not only to cultivate blessings but also nurture wisdom as well.

Wisdom is……?

"Being understanding which lets us attain peace"

Being understanding is truly very important.

Everyone, why is it that we humans have to go up against one another and compare and compete with each other?

Why is our society in such chaos?

Why is our society in such chaos?

Why are there so many disasters around the world?

The root cause lies in people's hearts and minds.

Because people's minds are afflicted they have trouble understanding others.

When we are riddled with afflictions we'll go up against one another.

On the small scale, (we'd bring disharmony to our family)

Every family has some sort of trouble and problem of its own.

So, in walking the path of cultivation, we should strive to be more understanding by trying to feel what others feel.

In other to understand others, we must put ourselves in others' shoes.

If we know to put ourselves in others' shoes then we'd know to be understanding towards one another.

If we can do this, there'll be harmony within the family.

We can then expand this harmony to our neighbors to our community, and to our society.

Wouldn't that be purifying people's hearts?

It is my hope that everyone can work to purify people's hearts and minds by ridding people of delusions and afflictions so that everyone is able to return to their pure, true nature of kindness, compassion and Great Love that is the same as the Buddha's

Can every one of you do that?

"Yes, we can"

That's right.

Not only are you able to do that you've already been involved in that.

See how Tzu Chi volunteers go amongst people be they living in the mountains or by the sea and how they go into the community to help people clean their houses or see if people need help with fixing their roof or cleaning up their surroundings.

See how they reach out to the elderly, the sick, or the physically impaired, etc., treating them like their own siblings.

Though they may not be able to stand on their own we take the initiative eto care for them.

In doing so, aren't we all opening up our hearts to embrace all suffering beings with Great Love?

Indeed, this requires that we open up our heart, which is usually so self-centered, so that we identify with the collective humanity and think of the greater human family and thus together care for our fellow man.

This is what charity work is all about.

Because of our kindness, we cannot bear to see others suffer so we will give rise to a heart of compassion.

After I'm done seeing patients on Saturday, my wife and I drive all night to be here.

One time, I asked her:

"We have to drive so far away"

"to come to Dallas for the free clinic"

"Don't you feel tired?"

To my surprise, she said:

"Tzu Chi volunteers always talk about"

"gaining joy from giving. That's why we come"

Being on the giving end is always better than being on the receiving end.

That is why we often bear a heart of gratitude.

When we give of ourselves and have helped relieve the suffering of others,

we'd have inner peace.

We'd think, "I feel at peace now"

"Having helped them"

"so that their suffering is relieved,"

"I feel at peace"

This is how we gain a sense of inner peace and joy.

Everyone, (Tzu Chi's mission is to)

purify the hears of humanity (and we can do it with the efforts of)

each and every one of you.

So, we must believe that I can be done and when human hearts are pure.

It'll naturally bring peace and harmony to society.

If society can be in peace and harmony, there will naturally be fewer disasters or no disasters at all.

We must believe that and we must have greater wisdom.

But, we must believe in collective karma.

If everyone can create blessings, then we will accumulate greater blessings as a whole and form a strong force of blessings.

When everyone prays with sincere piety, our prayers will resonate to reach the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and all heavenly beings above.

When I was expounding the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra, I spoke of how all things have deities.

There are deities of trees, rocks, water. wind, and fire.

They do exist.

So, throughout the universe there are deities guarding over different things.

So, the heavens are watching everything we do.

We should work more (o inspire goodness & piety)

This year, you have all been working hard to put up Jing Si Aphorisms in storefronts.

In May, you also held ceremonies to honor.

Buddha Day, Mother's Day, and Tzu Chi Day

In the so-called "Ghost Month", you also,

(helped change wrong, superstitious practices)

Didn't the events you put on create an atmosphere of peace and harmony?

Didn't everyone survive the month just fine?

Wasn't everyone very joyful about it?

More people stopped burning paper money and so, less carbon dioxide was emitted.

(If people have)

(greater wisdom and no more superstition),

There will be more peace and harmony in society.

Every one of you bodhisattvas, I truly need your help.

You all have wisdom and live within you.

Every one of us has the same nature as the Buddha's.

Not a bit less.

It's just that. as ordinary people, we are entangled in afflictions.

But, as we get rid of our afflictions bit by bit, our Buddha-nature will be revealed bit by bit.

As we get rid of our ignorance, we will gain wisdom.

Who can untie the rope of ignorance that binds us?

Yourself.

No one can help you but yourself.

So, we must seize every moment we have without letting any second slip by emptily and be diligent in getting rid of our greed, ignorance, etc.

This is what our Jing Si principles are about.

We need to pass on the Dharma to others.

Actually, I go to your home every day---

As long as you turn o the TV and turn in to Da Ai TV, you'll see me talking to you.

You must to be diligent in listening to the Dharma I teach and discipline yourself to cultivate spiritually.

We must furthermore have the mission.

(to walk the Bodhisattva Path in society)

We must take in and use the Dharma on ourselves and bring this Dharma into society.

971106人間菩提英文版Cherishing Our Beautiful Earth

Cherishing Our Beautiful Earth
每日播出內容 | FLV 300K WMV 300K | 56K

人間菩提--愛護漂亮的地球

With disasters constantly occurring around the world living in peace and tranquility is something that is hard to come by.

When natural disasters occur be it a storm, fire, earthquake, etc.

It always brings considerable suffering.

That is because real and basic life needs are directly affected.

After disasters strike, how can people rebuild their livelihood so that they can recover and get back on their feet?

We must first comfort people emotionally.

(and then help them recover the motivation)

To stand up on their own again.

This is in the case of natural disasters.

People can recover from such natural disasters as long as they can find peace in their hearts and find the strength to stand up again.

If everyone can do so, it will not be hard for that society to recover economically.

But, when it comes to man made disasters that's another story.

Disasters created by people are much harder to quell because people's mentality and attitudes---

(the inner storm of anger, discontent, etc.) are very difficult to quiet down.

Let us look at people around the world.

What kind of people are the richest and most at peace?

I often speak of people's insatiable desires.

(They always want more) and ever feel content.

Even with billions, they'd still want trillions.

If they have ten dollars, they want a hundred, a thousand, then a million---never being content.

Even when they have a trillion, would that be enough?

No, it wouldn't.

This is because people's desires are as boundless as the sea.

In life, we see how some people toil away their entire lives in the pursuit of wealth and pray to have longevity and children.

There are many people like that even among those who are elderly, alone. poor or disabled.

(Even in their circumstances,)

(they are still caught up in these things and)

(have yet to realize life's true meaning & value)

So, we should wake up from our deluded ways and learn to live our life with gratitude.

Spiritual wealth is more important than material wealth.

If we are materially wealthy but don't know to be content, we'd always be poor despite the money we have.

Take many businesspeople nowadays for example.

Because of the current global financial crisis and the fluctuations in the stock market,

Many investors are very worried and afraid.

Such worries that are wrapped up in concerns of gains and losses create much suffering.

So, if we can lead a plain and simple life, and make a living through our own labor and abilities that would be the most contented life.

If we are able to further help others, our life would be even richer for material comforts and instead lead p plain and simple life with our feet firmly planted on the ground and unwaveringly follow the path that the Buddha once walked.

Haven't I mentioned in my morning Dharma talk that everyone walking on the path with us is our family.

If we can guide everyone to walk the upright path the Bodhisattva Path, with us, isn't everyone our companion and family?

We can also inspire others to guide more people.

That way, every family in society can live in peace and safety, and everyone can be healthy physically and mentally.

Then, wouldn't that serve as a stream of purity in society?

We save a handful of rice every day.

It's like how Master tells us to save a coin every day.

We sell the rice we save, and donate the money to help Master with her work.

On November 1, Tzu Chi volunteers from four countries gathered together in Myanmar.(to share in the farmers' joy of a good harvest)

Because of Tzu Chi's help, compared to last year when we only reaped 40 barrels per acre, this time we reaped around 70 to 80 barrels per acre.

I reaped around 80 barrels per acre which is a big improvement from last year.

In fact, Myanmar is one of the largest granaries in the world.

So, we took care to give them especially good rice seeds.

With growing concerns over the issue of global food shortage we truly hope(to give assistance in such a way) as to help prevent food shortages.

We need farmers to farm the land diligently and we've given them rice seeds and fertilizers.

Hopefully, with that, food shortages will be less likely to occur.

We are now making similar plans to help countries in other parts of the world such as South Africa, etc where there are vast farmlands.

The locals would need instruction and guidance.

(to improve their farming techniques)

This is a plan we are considering.

By doing so, I hope we can help to alleviate global food shortages.

So, as long as there are people willing to farm the land and accept our help that can help to alleviate the food shortage problem a bit.

Seeing the Myanmarese rice farmers' good harvest.

I'm truly very happy.

Didn't I share with you a few days ago that bodhisattvas do not give up on anyone so we should go to people and extend a helping hand of our own accord.

Wherever help is needed, we shouldn't wait to be asked but should take the initiative to go to people's aid.

Indeed, going to people's aid without being asked and never giving up on anyone is the way of a living bodhisattva.

If everyone can be like this, this world will definitely be filled with peace.

With that, the weather will be favorable and society will be peaceful and harmonious.

Then, naturally, every family will live in happiness and harmony.

Whether this comes about depends on everyone's heart and mind.

When everyone harbors gratitude, respect, and love within how can there not be peace and harmony?

So, it is not difficult to achieve peace at all.

It takes but a change in mindset.

That's right.

It all depends on our mind.

As long as we are willing to live a simple life and abide by our duty, there wouldn't be so many people living in extravagance and luxury and wasting so many resources thereby polluting the land, and now it's affecting the climate.

So, although there is large human population on Earth, as long as everyone can calm their minds and live a plain and simple life.

I am sure there will be prosperity on Earth.

(as well as peace and harmony around the world)

And then, this world would be a pureland.

Indeed, among all the planets in this universe the most beautiful planet is Earth.

From the satellite image of the Earth we can see that Earth is such a beautiful blue globe.

Aren' t we very blessed to be able to live on this planet? Living on the most beautiful planet in the universe we should cherish and protect it and not damage it

The Blessings of Peace and Stability

人間菩提--邊地糧荒‧平安即福

We all live on the same planet & in the same era, yet why do people in different parts of the world lead such different lives?

Look at the life that we lead.

Are we all able to be content?

Look at the people in the Republic of Zimbabwe and what hardship they are enduring.

It is a situation that was created by people.

(Zimbabwe used to be hailed as)

(southern Africa's bread basket) producing all kinds of food crops as it has very fertile land.

(If everyone lived peacefully and were content,)

They could have grown enough crops and led a stable and sufficient life.

However, because of people's unrest, he citizens of Zimbabwe have now been affected by hunger, poverty, and disasters.

Zimbabwe used to be colonized by Britain.

(and gained independence around 1980)

In 2000, Zimbabwe's farmlands which had been owned by white farmers were redistributed to blacks.

But, many of the new farmers had little or no experience in farming.

(So, since the redistribution,)

(agricultural production has fallen considerably)

On top of that drought and political strife have also contributed to the significant shortfalls in food production since 2001 eventually leading to today's hyperinflation.

Last year, a Taiwanese businessman in Zimbabwe Mr. Cai came back to Taiwan.

At the time, I happened to be in Taipei,

So, our volunteers brought Mr. Cai to see me.

He expressed his hope for Tzu Chi volunteers to go to Zimbabwe to see the living conditions of the local people and see what could be done to help them.

So, on November 2 of last year, our volunteer, Stephen Huang, went there.

He brought back many pictures and footage.

My heart truly went out to the people.

So, later, Tzu Chi volunteers in South Africa went to Zimbabwe to get further understanding of the living conditions of the locals and, seeing how much the locals needed help.

Last November, our volunteers went there to give out material supplies for the first time.

That was the first time we gave out supplies in Zimbabwe.

Having witnessed their need for aid,

(we have now begun to care for people in Zimbabwe)

Many of he local Taiwanese businesspeople have been inspired to become Tzu Chi volunteers and they all willingly give of themselves.

But the surge in inflation rate is truly unbelievable.

The Zimbabwean dollar now has very little value.

In order to buy a loaf of bread, people need to bring a whole sackful of money.

What's more, the inflation continues to surge.

So, now, many teachers are not interested in teaching.

Cleaners aren't going to work either because their wages can't cove their travel fares.

When people can't even afford a loaf of bread, how can they afford travel fare?

(It makes life very hard)

They are on the brink of economic collapse

Their currency is worthless and they're on the brink of economic collapse.

That's the kind of suffering and poverty.

People are enduring in Zimbabwe.

Seeing that, Tzu Chi volunteers in South Africa will be working together with our volunteers in Zimbabwe to hold another aid distribution on November 9.

Our volunteers from South Africa will mobilize to help again this time.

It's truly very difficult to pinpoint the root cause of all their suffering.

All in all, it can be traced back to people's discontent and greed.

That's what has created such turmoil.

Because of the turmoil and strife people can't work and live in peace despite there being such a fertile land.

If people could live and work in peace and stability they would all be safe and well and the fertile land they farmed could have been able to sustain their living.

The turmoil is all due to the unrest in people's hearts.

We also see that Congo is at war.

Humanitarian aid groups have said that ceasefire needs to be declared before they can distribute aid.

The situation is truly very worrying.

Our hearts go out to the people there.

However, I also saw another news report on Da Ai TV which comforted me very much.

In Myanmar, we have provided love and support to the cyclone survivors since May.

(including distributing rice seeds to farmers)

Now, the rice plants have all flourished to become a sea of gold with farmers reaping a good harvest.

Seeing how the good harvest has now given them a means to sustain their living.

I am truly very happy.

See, so many rice farmers worked so hard to help themselves.

(So, with the rice seeds we gave them)

(and favorable weather,)

(they were able to reap a good harvest)

Seeing that, we're truly very relieved.

Turning to Sichuan, China---

Ever since Tzu Chi volunteers went to their aid after the earthquake struck in May.

We have inspired many local youths and businesspeople to join us.

A few days ago, we saw that they went to visit two senior homes and brought the elderly out to sit in the sun.

They also guided the young volunteers to give the elderly people a massage.

See how these local volunteers squatted down and gently washed the feet of the elderly.

(So, it truly shows that) as long as everyone harbors love in their hearts gets along harmoniously with one another and works to give of oneself with love.

However great a disaster we encounter we'd still be able to recover and quickly come out from our grief and sorrow and then stand on our own tow feet again.

When people love on another, they can overcome all difficulties.

All in all, true happiness lies in living in peace and safety.

Being safe and well is truly a blessing.

What brings us the greatest joy is love.

(So long as we have love in our hearts,) wherever we go and sow seeds of love these seeds will sprout grow into small trees, then big trees and eventually produce abundant fruits.

Such seeds of love and what we need in this world.

(So, I earnestly hope that these seeds of love)

(can spread far and wide)

Though people may be devastated by disaster as long as they harbor love in their hearts and their hearts are peaceful.

See how bright and cheerful they can be and how they an further bring warmth to others.

It truly all depends on our mind.

So, everyone, we truly should seize every opportunity to do whatever we know to be right.

Everyone should remain vigilant---

By no means should we do things that aren't right.

The action we take, no matter how tiny it may seem can benefit others (if it is a good deed) while something that is wrong be it only the uttering of a few words can lead the whole world to turmoil and chaos.

So, everyone, please be more mindful at all times.
