人間菩提--別出心裁的醫師節

We see the medical staff at our hospital in Xindian celebrating Doctor's Day in a different way---

They went to Shuangxi Township in Taipei County to hold a free clinic and visit patients at home.

Though I'm giving up my Sunday to come here being able to contribute my efforts and be of service to the locals actually makes me very happy.

For six years now, we have conducted a free clinic in Shuangxi on the first Sunday of every month.

As Shuangxi is in a mountainous area, the residents there cannot reaily travel to the city.

So, our medical team and volunteers went there instead Supt. Chao along with the three asst. supts.

(as well as doctors, specialists, and nurses.) from different medical fields all went this time.

We see many heartwarming stories at the free clinic.

Everyone on the medical team wore smiles on their faces and spoke gently to the patients.

We see how Supt. Chao leaned so close to the patient and personally treated the patient's wound.

That was how mindful and caring he was.

He truly is a Great Healer with Great Love who serves as a pillar of strength for the poor the sick.

When we're treating patients at the hospital we don't usually

(think about the patients' living conditions)

(In fact, every patient has his own life & story)

But, we will not find out until we go to where they live.

We also see Asst. Supt. Shyu helping to bathe this grandpa with such gentleness just as if he were caring for his own father.

This grandpa and his elderly wife live up in the mountains by themselves.

Although they have children, their children all live in the city.

Once, when the grandpa was working in the fields, he fell and hurt his leg.

(Because treatment was delayed,)

He developed cellulitis

(With his leg injured,) he was unable to go to the hospital so the small wound worsened to the point where he could not walk.

Since he was not able to go to the hospital our doctors went to him instead to give him comfort and medical care and to help bathe him.

How loving and heartwarming it is.

What's even rarer to come by (was how Asst. Supt. Shyu's patients)

(were inspired by him to join the doctors)to serve as volunteers this time.

It was their first time to serve as volunteers.

They witnessed what hardship the poor and the sick are enduring as well as how loving and caring our doctors are.

Indeed, all that we do in this world every day in history in the making.

Isn't the exemplary example set by each person leaving a legacy?

As long as we work mindfully at every moment in time, all that we do will become a part of the Dharma treasury and we are writing our own history with our deeds.

Because of this, everything that is done at every moment, by everyone is very touching.

We also see very heartwarming images in Myanmar.

On November 2 and 3, the groundbreaking ceremonies for our Great Love village and school were held.

A few days before the groundbreaking ceremonies villagers in the area along with Tzu Chi volunteers from Malaysia, Vietnam. Thailand, and Taiwan gathered together with other local volunteers to prepare the construct on sites for the ceremonies.

The local villagers and volunteers had all been earnestly anticipating the groundbreaking ceremonies on November 2 and 3 so they all came and helped to set up the sites.

Everyone was so happy and excited that it seemed like an even more joyous occasion than New Year's and other festivals.

The groundbreaking ceremonies were very stately and dignified ceremonies.

Everyone expressed gratitude to Tzu Chi because in the wake of the disasters in China and Myanmar.

Tzu Chi volunteers worldwide mobilized to collect and pool together everyone's contribution to help these two countries.

All Tzu Chi volunteers took part in the effort.

(and though in different countries,)

All volunteers have the same orientation---they follow th Jing Si principles and carry out the Tzu Chi way of going to people in need to comfort them with loving care and to pave a path with love.

Now we see that a very smooth, even path has already been paved.

We are also building a school for the children.

This will be a school that provides

(eight years of education)

(from elementary school through junior high)

At present, the local children from different classes have to cramp together and share on big classroom.

Each teacher gives lessons to her own class while students in different grades listen to their own teacher.

Seeing that, my heart truly goes out to them.

But I'm also filled with admiration for the children's ability to concentrate, and the teachers' dedication under these circumstances.

So, I hope that the construction work can be completed soon so that the children can have separate classrooms in which they can concentrate on their studies and have a better learning environment.

A few days ago, I asked Mr. Want Ming-de a member of our construction committees:

"Is it still raining in Myanmar?"

He said, "The rain has stopped"

"Ever since the groundbreaking ceremony,"

"the weather has been very good"

"On our way back,"

"we saw some farmers collecting the harvest"

I then asked, "Does the rice look beautiful?"

He said, "Yes, the field"

"is filled with beautiful golden rice plants"

I was very happy to hear that.

With the rice seeds and fertilizers that Tzu Chi volunteers gave them the farmers can now collect a good harvest.

So, now they have the means to sustain themselves and will soon have permanent housing while the children will soon have a well-built school to go to.

See, this is where their hope for the future lies.

(Among all this good news,)what filled me with the greatest joy was to see the seeds of love flourishing in the local area.

Each of the local volunteers is like a seed that is now growing into a tree.

They truly grow very fast because they watch Life Wisdom every day.

That's why they can remain firm in their resolve and dedicate themselves very diligently.

Seeing that we know there's now more country with Tzu Chi volunteers locally.

Indeed, it is the existence of suffering people that brings bodhisattvas into being

(So, wherever there are people in need,)

(living bodhisattvas will be there to provide aid)

Take Shuangxi for example.

Why do our medical volunteers go there every month?

It is because there are patients there who can't move about due to their physical condition.

So, or medical volunteers go there every month to give free clinics and to go to people's homes to provide them with the much needed medical treatment.

For that, I am truly very grateful.

That's how we should bring Buddhism into the context of everyday life and "humanize" Bodhisattvas.

See how our doctors and volunteer bodhisattvas join together and go wherever help is needed.

There are too many things to be grateful for.

All in all, thank you.

971103人間菩提英文版 Body Donors---A Whole and Complete Life

Body Donors---A Whole and Complete Life
每日播出內容 |  300K WMV 300K | 56K

人間菩提--人格圓滿竟功德

See our Silent Mentors (body donors)

(Today, their physical bodies will be cremated)

And it represents their final departure from this world.

But in living out the value of their lives

(they have left a legacy in this world)

During our lifetime

(we make use of the body)

When we pass away, the body begins decomposing inside the coffin.

Body fluids will come out from the body, and bacteria will eat away the flesh.

Finally, the body dries up and all that's left is a pile of bones.

It's hard to say how long this process takes.

See, it's truly very frightening.

If the body is cremated, the body is burned in a big blaze of flames.

And want's left?

A pile of ashes.

With such being the reality of life can we deny how unclean the body truly is?

That's how unclean the body is.

But, what gives our life value is what we do with this body when our mind is still clear, our body still healthy, and we can still move about freely.

We should be our own master and not be led astray by temptations in our external environment.

One wrong step and we'd stray far off course and create a lot of bad karma with this unclean body of ours.

The karma we create will follow us to our next life.

Although we will be reborn into a different body in our next life, we'll carry the karma we've created with us.

So, in our lifetime, when we understand the truth in life, everything we do will be fair and reasonable and in line with Truth (which is the pure)

(original nature within us)

To return to our true, pure nature, we must learn to deal with people and matters in a way that resolves everything perfectly.

Then our life would be whole, complete and perfect.

That's why I often say to everyone that we should do things in ways that foster harmony.

If there's harmony between people and in matters we do then it'd be in accord with true principles.

To achieve harmony in whatever we do is not an easy task.

But, as long as we have the will everything is attainable.

The six body donors for the surgical simulations this time had truly led a whole and complete life by making the fullest use of their body to complete the mission of their life.

Take Mr. Qin for example.

I'm sure many of you know him.

Mr. Qin and his wife have been serving as Tzu Chi volunteers for over 20 years.

He knew about plumbing, electricity, and machinery.

During the time when our hospital in Hualien was being constructed Mr. Qin and his wife became certified Tzu Chi members.

Ever since then, he could be seen at the construction site of every one of Tzu Chi's construction projects.

He was truly a good disciple of mine.

Not only did he and his wife walk on the Bodhisattva Path together, but his mother also stayed at the Abode (to be closer to me).

Everyone at the Abode calls her "Grandma"

Mr. Qin & his wife often came to visit his mother and every time they came.

They'd walk around the Abode with Grandma while talking to her softly and gently.

That was how he loved and cared for his mother.

It has truly left a deep impression on me.

We also saw another body donor, Mr. Xu Zeng-ci.

He joined Tzu Chi in 1999.

The first time he went with Tzu Chi volunteers to visit an elderly man who lived all by himself.

He smelled a very strong stench as soon as he stepped into the house.

At the time, the first thing that came to his mind was to leave.

But, while standing outside he saw how the other volunteer cared for the elderly man without worrying about the stench and with such loving care so he went inside to help without giving it a second thought.

They helped to clean up the elderly man with care and mindfulness.

(so that his body no longer smelled)

Having helped him get all cleaned up at that moment.

Mr. Xu felt a sense of great peace and happiness.

So, though earlier, he had been ready to leave from that moment onwards he vowed that he would never waver again in his resolve to serve others.

So, he served as a regular volunteer at our hospital in Yuli and he helped provide care to people living in 22 villages in Yuli township.

He would pay home visits or provide care to those whose mobility was restricted.

He knew the conditions of every family in the community like the back of his hand.

When he was hospitalized for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, I happened to visit our hospital in Yuli so I quickly went to see him and asked him.

"How are you doing now?"

He said, "Master, I'm fine and at peace"

"Although I know I'm in the terminal stage,"

"I'm very much at peace"

"I don't feel any pain. As long as I'm alive,"

"I'll go on with Tzu Chi's work"

"I know what I should do"

"I'll always be a Tzu Chi volunteer"

"in this life and in my future lives"

See how carefree he was.

This year when I went to Yuli again,

(he was there under palliative care)

Be mindful.

Be sincere and pious at heart.

Remember what I've said.

Just let things take their course.

Don't forget what you've vowed to do.

Leave your body in the doctors' hands and just see where karmic affinities take you.

Open up your heart broad and wide.

When you come back, return to the Bodhisattva Path.

You've lived your life to its fullest and have made very good use of your time.

You've truly done a lot.

You all heard my conversation with Mr. Xu just now.

See, he even wrote a letter to all Tzu Chi volunteers reassuring them that joining Tzu Chi is the right thing to do.

His only regret was that the time he spent in Tzu Chi was too short

Having joined for only 10 years, he felt he should have joined even earlier.

See how he never regretted serving as a volunteer and caring for people so selflessly.

That was something he never regretted.

There's also another body donor, Chen Tian-fu.

He was an honorary board member as well as a Tzu Cheng member.

He carried out Tzu Chi's work very diligently with love and mindfulness.

Like the other two volunteers, I will always remember him in my heart.

All of them, upon joining Tzu Chi, walked on the path firmly and unwaveringly.

Be it contributing their efforts, donating money or material supplies, they did it all steadfastly, never having second thoughts.

See, how they harbored a heart of great loving-kindness. great compassion, and great joy without any regrets, complaint, or worry.

See how at peace they were.

Even at the very end.

(with a heart of selfless giving)

They donated their bodies for medical use so that doctors and medical students could gain medical knowledge through

(performing surgical simulations on their body)

That was what they wished.

All in all, among the six body donors, four of them were either commissioners, Tzu Chengs, or honorary board members.

(Today, they'll be cremated) and bring their meritorious life to perfect ending.

We must express our utmost respect for them.

(for being exemplars of character and virtue)

I am truly very grateful.

971102人間菩提英文版 Building a Future of Hope in Myanmar

Building a Future of Hope in Myanmar

每日播出內容 | FLV 300K WMV 300K | 56K

人間菩提--欣見收割‧重建希望

"He said that in his entire life he has never met such a kind person before."

"So, he made a wish--- his wish is to give back."

"So, when he saw me"

"he quickly gave me some money as a donation"

"After the disaster, Tzu Chi came to help us"

"giving us fertilizer"

"So, we'll have a good harvest"

"Then, I can help other people, just like the way Dharma Master Cheng Yen does I donate this money from the bottom of my heart."

Every day can become an important day in history.

Today is November 2.

On May 2, six months ago today a cyclone hit Myanmar causing great devastation to that country.

It was heartrending to see what happened.

Putting ourselves in their shoes

(how were they to survive after the disaster?"

So, right after the disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers quickly went to Myanmar to help the disaster victims.

The volunteers found that the local people had a very pure and good heart.

They could not change their circumstances, so they accepted it all with a positive attitude.

What hope did they have?

They didn't even know where their next meal was to come from. Such was

(the extent of their hardship)

We provided them rice and supplies.

Just for that, they were very grateful.

At the time of the aid distribution, it was raining.

Look at the conditions they lived in.

Without a proper roof, the rain easily got inside and made the ground very muddy.

How was one to live in such conditions?

Our hearts really went out to them.

Because Tzu Chi volunteers went there to experience what they experience.

Our compassion for them grew.

The more we saw the more deeply we felt for them as we took the paths they took and saw the conditions they lived in.

As a result, we resolved to build houses for them.

(But, to build houses for the cyclone victims)

We needed the government's permission and also needed to work with its various agencies.

I'm very grateful to our volunteers from Malaysia for taking on this responsibility.

Tomorrow will be the groundbreaking ceremony for the village we are building.

There will be people from five countries there and at least 700 people will be attending.

We'll be building around 700 houses so that the cyclone victims can have a safe home to live in.

In designing the houses and building a village for them.

We need to make sure that the houses.

(are suitable for the local area)

Because most people in the area live in.

(very simple houses)

The houses we build them cannot be too fancy.

But it has to withstand the wind and rain.

So, we decided to build them brick houses.

There, brick houses are considered very good houses.

Few get to live in brick houses.

Since we want to give them a safe house the house will be taller and will be elevated from the ground.

The house is only 33 sq. meters (360 sq. feet) but there's second floor in the house.

So, there's another 33 sq. meters (360 sq. feet) at the second floor.

Totaling 66 sq. meters (720 sq. feet)

The restroom is in a separate place outside the house.

(so they can have more space inside)

The kitchen is also outside the house as well.

The compartment next to the house serves as the cooking place.

That was the sample house they showed me.

However, I suggested a few improvements.

So the final house will be even better than the sample house.

"I'm a Buddhist"

"I was already thinking of helping people."

"not only physically"

"but also materially as well"

"I want to help Tzu Chi build a safe and sturdy house."

"Therefore, the houses that we're going to build will probably be the best ones in the area."

Tomorrow, we'll be holding to groundbreaking ceremony for the village.

Actually, today is the groundbreaking ceremony for one of the schools we are building.

The teachers, students, and parents are all very grateful for this.

Since September, the teachers have been learning Tzu Chi songs with sign language.

So that they can give a performance at today's ceremony.

(They've practiced very hard) to be in perfect unison.

It is a gesture to show their appreciation and hopes for the school Tzu Chi will build them.

There is also a local businesswoman who was very moved.

She owns a relatively large women's clothing store.

She was very moved by Tzu Chi's work and decided to close her store for seven days to help with Tzu Chi's aid project.

She also had her employees join her as well as learn sign language to Tzu Chi's songs.

After participating in a few of our distributions, her employees changed.

Before, when the customers who came to their store were especially hard to please, her employees wouldn't be nice to them.

However, after volunteering with Tzu Chi, they've learned to speak nicely and kindly and be more patient.

After volunteering with Tzu Chi, I've changed a lot.

(The customers sometimes give us a hard time.)
But I don't get mad at them and can still treat them courteously, with a smile.

Look at the great impact Tzu Chi is having there.

Be it government officials, businesspeople. store owners. employees, or teachers everyone gives of themselves enthusiastically.

Even the poor have adopted coin banks and are making donations.

Store owners are doing that that, too.

They al know that this was how Tzu Chi began and so, everyone is willing to emulate that practice and spirit.

This makes me most happy.

Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country.

Some Buddhist monks are now joining us in our work.

(and starting to walk the Bodhisattva Path)
which is about going out into the community to reach out to people in need.

Seeing people becoming inspired to help others truly makes me very happy.

But there's one thing that worries me---the rice harvest.

Just as it was about time for the farmers to harvest the rice……

Those who harvested early had gotten a plentiful harvest.

With the rice seeds and fertilizer we gave them.

Their harvest was double their usual amount.

But, the majority of the rice crops have yet to be harvested.

A few days ago, it kept raining, and everyone prayed for the rain to stop.

We heard that the rain stopped yesterday and last night.

There was only a light drizzle.

I hear that right now, it's not raining there.

I do hope the rain won't start again.

So that they can truly get a good and plentiful harvest.

Having helped them, it really makes us happy to see their abundant harvest.

But we pray that the weather will continue o cooperate.

So, we must pray for them.

People have helped them, but they also need the weather to help them.

Of course, they need to help themselves, too.

Today is the groundbreaking for our school.

As for the permanent housing for 700 families the plan is to finish building the 700 plus houses within a year.

We hope that they will soon have a home they can live stably in and that the children can soon have a school they can learn safely in.

This is thanks to everyone's efforts.

We see the fruits of everyone's contributions to the aid project.

I hope that by May 2 of next year, we can see them moving into the Tzu Chi village.

We also hope that a year from now, we can also see the completion of he school.

In all, I'm truly grateful to all Tzu Chi volunteers for their contributions.

971101人間菩提英文版 15Years of Service for Tzu Chi USA's First Free Clinic Center

15Years of Service for Tzu Chi USA's First Free Clinic Center
每日播出內容 | FLV 300K WMV 300K | 56K

人間菩提--美國義診中心成立十五年

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Tzu Chi USA's first free clinic center,

Fifteen years ago today, Tzu Chi USA's first free clinic center opened.

(in Los Angeles, California)

Because many aren't able to get medical care due to the language barrier, lack of health insurance or because they are illegal immigrants.

Tzu Chi therefore opened a free clinic center.

There have been many moving stories involving the Free Clinic Center.

Besides services provided at the Center, the personnel also go to the US-Mexico border to care for shanty communities mostly populated by people who want to

Cross the border into the U.S.

When they are sick, they have no one to turn to.

In their time of suffering, Tzu Chi people are there to provide medical care.

Besides holding free clinics, Tzu Chi USA has also built a school there.

Moreover, starting last year, many of the doctors at the free clinics are local doctors.

Now, over twenty local Mexican doctors participate.

Dr. De Leon is one of these doctors.

He's a very kind doctor.

At the first free clinic he took part in he was very moved.

So, after the free clinic, he 'adopted" four coin banks.

He said, one is for his own clinic, one is for his mother.

One is for his wife, and one is for his son.

He wanted all members of his family to each keep a coin bank.

Such was his commitment to continuing this practice of Tzu Chi's, which is part of

Tzu Chi's founding spirit and philosophy.

Last year, they also began promoting this actively.

So, we can see that this spirit of service and providing free medical care has already spread from the U.S. to Mexico.

It is truly moving to witness.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., Tzu Chi USA already has four clinic centers, and they also go out-of-state or abroad when needed.

For instance, when disasters happened in Central or South America, the personnel also went with the disaster relief team to give aid.

After the relief mission ended, they continued to evaluate whether to go back and hold a free clinic.

From footage they've sent back, we see that they are already making preparations for the Free Clinic Center's 15th anniv. celebration.

They are setting up exhibitions and posters to let the walls tell stories.

So, everyone is busy with the preparations.

Look at the way Dr. Hsu took care of the people helping with the preparations and asked them to rest for a bit.

He even brought tea to each of them because everyone has been working so hard.

He is the head of the Free Clinic Center but you always see him being very humble.

He often kneels or squats down by his patients to tend to their wounds or to comfort them.

He truly lives up to the name of "great healer"

There are many touching stories about how our Free Clinic Center has helped people to recover.

For example, there are many stories about victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Among them is a man who owned a pizza store in New Orieans.

The hurricane destroyed his pizza store.

His wife and daughter also died in the disaster.

So, he and his son left New Orleans and went to Los Angeles to stay with a friend.

His friend set up the car garage for him & his son to live in.

Having lost everything and his loved ones for a time, he was not able to get past the tragedy.

But when he was ready to make a new start again, he started having health problems.

He was able to find a job working in a restaurant.

(but his health problems limited what he could do)

So, he went to a public hospital to try to get treatment.

He waited around 11 hours to see a doctor.

When it was finally his turn, the doctor told him that because his illness was not life threatening he wouldn't be able to get treatment.

He had waited for such a long time, but because he was uninsured.

He had no other choice.

After learning about what happened to him, a coworker felt sympathy for him and told him about our Free Clinic Center.

The doctors at our Free Clinic Center diagnosed him with hernia.

Since curing it requires surgery our doctors referred him to the hospital run by Dr. Matthew Lin.

(a Tzu Chi volunteer)

They said he could get his operation there.

After the surgery, Tzu Chi helped pay US$3,000 for the medical expenses.

That's more than 90 thousand Taiwan Dollars.

That's how much medical care costs in the U.S.

It is very expensive.

So, for those of us living in Taiwan we need to be thankful that we have national health insurance which also covers health examinations.

When one of our U.S. Tzu Chi volunteers went for

(a health examination in the U.S. ---)

While in Bolivia for a relief mission, he felt very unwell and experienced dizziness.

When he returned to the U.S. he went to get a health examination.

It cost him US$30,000.

After the test results came back, the report indicated that he was healthy.

Given such costly medical care, the port the uninsured, and disaster victims cannot afford medical care.

Many disasters have happened in the U.S. lately so there are many disaster victims in need of government aid.

Right now, our U.S. Tzu Chi volunteers are still carrying out relief efforts.

We're still helping the victims of Hurricane Ike.

So, in life, a lot of things can turn out very differently than what we imagined

There can be a big disparity between what we think and the way things really are.

That's why we must keep our feet on the ground.

We have to be grateful for the environment we are living in now.

We need peace in Taiwan.

(I hope) people can be harmonious and cherish our society and all that it provides.

The society cannot take more disorder.

I hope we will all think about the welfare of our future generation and our own welfare, and cherish our peace and safety.

We must all cherish the life we have now.

We really can't afford to have any chaos or disorder in our society.

Taiwan is very small.

But, a large country like the U.S. where many want to live is not necessarily a better place to live.

I'm grateful to Tzu Chi people in the U.S.---

Our doctors ,medical staff, and our Tzu Chi volunteers

(for running a free clinic center)

And taking care of the medical needs of more than 100,000 people.

Their services and their loving care have helped to relieve many people's illnesses.

I'm very grateful to them.

Today's Jing Si Aphorisms:    Having gratitude can help us dissolve our inner afflictions and waken our compassion.

今日靜思語: 感恩, 可以打開我們的心結, 並且啟發我們的悲心.
